How do you think dinosaurs became extinct?
Answer: I think that it started out as climate change due to the Milankovitch Cycles, then Mother Nature just screwed with them from there.
The Cretaceous was quite warm and tropical, and we know this because about half of the plant fossils that we have are tropical plants. As the M. Cycles continued, the temperature would have begun to drop, killing off many of the plants (producers) that the herbivores (primary consumers) relied on. This obviously leads to a dying off of the herbivores. As the herbivores died, the predators would begin to die, because their food was also disappearing. There's also a marked decrease in plankton in the fossil record, and as plankton are the producers in marine environments, that would have stressed and killed the ocean creatures in the same manner as the terrestrial guys.
There were enormous amounts of volcanism that began during this period, such as the huge eruptions of the Deccan traps. This would have blasted massive amounts of ash, sulfur dioxide, and other gases like hexafluorine (very, very toxic) into the air. The ash would have covered the sky to block out sunlight, and also landing on the surface to snuff out plants and water sources. The sulfur dioxide is also a major element of blocking sunlight (modern volcanoes like Pinatubo have lowered our temperatures by about 2 degrees Celsius for a year or so after eruption), plus, it can form sulfuric acid, which is the major component of what we call acid rain (the other component is nitric acid). Obviously, any organisms within the range of the Traps would have been burned alive, or chased out of their habitat and into a new habitat in which they were not meant to survive. Like taking a gorilla out of the Congo Rainforest and putting it in the forests of the Pacific Northwest and expecting it to be happy.
It's also possible that due to changing sea levels, disease set in, like we Europeans bringing smallpox and other lovely critters to the Native Americans on both continents, none of whom had any resistance to them whatsoever. Thing is, with the changing sea level, land bridges started to appear, allowing animals to move into places they'd never been (like the Conquistadors did).
Now, I imagine that all of these things were going on at once, putting the dinosaurs right on the edge.. but they were managing to stay on the edge. Then Mother Nature gave them the finger one more time, in the form of the K-T Yucatan asteroid strike (or maybe it was a comet, we aren't entirely sure). The impact would have shot huge amounts of ash and steam into the atmosphere, incinerated thousands of square miles of animals and plants, starting massive forest fires beyond the incineration line, and creating a 2,000 foot high tsunami that slammed North and South America, Europe, and to a lesser extent, Africa. All of this would have disturbed the atmosphere so much that it became unstable, bringing on huge storms like hurricanes occurring when and where they shouldn't, or even "just" huge thunderstorms, even changing global wind patterns. The sunlight, which was already teetering, would have been even more blocked out, leading to the ultimate dying of plants and the food chain, and plunging Earth into an extremely cold period of the type that cold-blooded reptiles cannot survive.
So they were on the edge, and the asteroid strike pushed them over.
