A SYSTEM DIVIDED; Integrating a School, One Child at a Time

HER bow flopping on her head, Kylie Cao pirouetted alongside her fellow kindergartners in pink tutus and black leotards. The girls smiled with nervous concentration. They were, unwittingly, performing the delicate dance of desegregation. One child was white, one was black, and seven girls were Hispanic. Kylie was the only Asian student onstage -- - Public School 257 in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, is one of four schools in the neighborhood that has received a 2010 magnet grant from the federal Education Department to spur desegregation; school faces numerous hurdles in the integration process, including geography, city priorities and battles for resources and test scores. Will teachers continue to lose their jobs due to budget cuts or is there hope on the horizon?

There is more pressure on teachers to raise test scores, but due to layoffs class sizes have increased making that an even more difficult task. School districts keep cutting the resources necessary to help students reach that goal. How does reducing the teacher work force help the student? How can a teacher be an effective educator if they are constantly worrying about their job security? The kids lose in the long run.
Answer: No, relief is still at least a few years away. The budgets in my state continue to be tight because of cuts from federal and state subsidies. Locally, school board directors are under pressure from citizens not to raise local taxes. So lower tax money is hitting from every direction. In my district, there are wage freezes at every level, cuts in supplies, reduction in staff from attrition, and no capital improvement projects. This are very tough times. Remember too, that the US government mandates certain programs that districts must implement but they do not give us the money to operate. You are absolutely right that the kids lose. It is all rooted in NCLB, a law thought to help students but in reality being the worst thing to come along. It is all data driven now and will continue to get worse. In just a few years, we will hit the year when all schools must have 100% adequate yearly progress. Since no schools can achieve this, they will be put on warning. After 5 years on the warning, they can be taken over by the state and then private for-profit companies can take over. That will be the end of public schools as we know them.

What are the requirements to get into a good Pharmacy school?

(Pharmacy school as in a University or a college) What GPA and SAT scores would impress Pharmacy schools? Would taking the SAT II for biology, chemistry, and mathematics increase my chances in getting into one?
Answer: There is a lot of misinformation about pharm schools floating around Yahoo, so to get RELIABLE information, check the website of the AACP. that is the official national organization that coordinates info about all accredited Colleges of Pharmacy in the USA. There are some pharm schools that have a six year program - two years undergrad and then the standard four years of pharm school - The first main thing you need to get into a six year program in pharmacy direct from HS is a near perfect GPA with AP chem and AP bio and 5's on the AP exams, and then very solid SATs and good achievement scores. Then you need a totally clear disciplinary record and really good references. Pharm schools do not want anyone with any kind of irresponsible actions on their record.... when you are a pharmacist, or even a trainee, you have to act with 100% professionalism. To get into most pharm schools these days, you cannot be admitted direct from HS, you must attend college and apply from college. They will look at your college GPA, expecially your pre-professional classes of chem, biochem, organic chem, bio, etc. For most schools you need to take and score well on the PCAT exams. The competition to get into pharm school is no joke. Our local state pharm school is neither famous nor high ranked and there was a recent news article that said that over 1200 applicants competed for 90 seats this year. Good luck. If you want this career, you will have to work hard for it.

Im 100% fluent in French and Ive been taking Spanish classes for a while. I went on a year long student exchange in France. What kind of summer job and volunteering opportunities should I look for? Also, any other suggestions for how I could pump some life into my college application?
Answer: Your background is impressive - a multi-disciplined, non-traditional applicant. As long as you get high SAT or ACT scores, you should be very strong in many competitive applicant pools. The key is to apply for "non-traditional" options to increase your chances. I am an engineer and observed that most courses have very few females. This gender disparity means that if you apply as an engineer or "traditionally-male" major then your odds of acceptance are much higher mainly because you will not be competing with that many female applicants. On the other hand, if you apply in "traditionally-female" majors like writing, social sciences, or business accounting, then admission is much harder. But with your multi-disciplined background you can probably still get in. In addition, the linguistic studies can give other options. Perhaps you can apply as a French major and emphasize that background. The interest in other cultures and languages is very strong. Neurologically, you are literally using more areas of your brain more efficiently in the central nervous system when you choose to be multi-lingual at a young age. I know this because I am bilingual and studied neurophysiology with medical imaging and math models of the brain. I'd recommend "non-traditional" schools and "non-traditional" majors to enhance probability of acceptance and financial aid at elite schools: Cal Tech (engineering, science or applied math) MIT (engineering, science or appliedmath) etc. Ivy League Schools (linguistics) But also try these for added dimensions of opportunities at both private and public universities. Remember that public ivy schools are also excellent choices and far less expensive, especially if one is in your state. These majors below are in high demand. Examples of "public ivies" include Cal-Berkeley, Texas, Michigan, Florida, Virginia, Wisconsin, UW at Seattle, UCLA, etc. medical informatics biomedical engineering healthcare administration medical billing public health medical physics radiology (undergrad) health economics Ultimately, your college and major should be able to get you a job that pays well with good stability. Hypothetically, if there were a recession in the year of your graduation, what majors would be in demand? Ask an experienced counselor, google "jobs in recession" or "top ten jobs", or talk to alumni. If a college student who graduated with honors is unemployed, then find out why. Check these job sites and your major. Would companies hire someone with the major you choose? www.hotjobs.com www.dice.com www.linkedin.com Good luck. The only "impediment" in your case may be the temptation to "rush into marriage." As a bright, athletic woman who is intelligent and a cheerleader, the opportunity to get "married too soon" is a major risk. I've seen beautiful, intelligent sorority women rush into marriage only to get divorced 5-10 years later. Divorce rates are highest for those under 25. Beware of that statistic.

How do I get into a psychiatry school?

I tried to do research online for schools & apparently I am not finding what Im looking for. What are the requirements to get into a psychiatry school? Are there certain prerequisite courses I need to take or do I need a degree/license in something first?
Answer: If you want to be a psychiatrist you need to go to medical school. (edit: THIS IS IN ALL STATES. NOT "IN MOST STATES"!) A psychiatrist is a medical doctor that has a speciality in mental health. You will be able to provide health assessments, treatment, diagnoses, and prescribe medications. This will be the schooling plan for a psychiatrist: -Bachelor's degree in anything you want while following the pre-med track (a degree in psychology, biology, or chemistry makes the most sense but there is an increase in liberal arts majors now as well to become interesting to medical schools because they are so competetive.) ^ 4 years -medical school, get your doctorate degree (MD or DO, *basically* the same thing) ^ 4 years -complete your psychiatric residency ^at least 4 years You will need to take the MCATs and therefore will need to be on the pre-med track while working for your bachelor's degree. The classes will prepare you for passing the MCATs and be the classes medical schools will require for acceptance. It varies, but in general you will usually have to take: -biology with lab (usually 2 semesters of this are required) -general chemistry with lab (2 semesters, usually) -organic chemistry with lab (usually 2 semesters are required) -physics sometimes with a lab (usually 2 semesters required) -sometimes calculus is required (1 semester is usual) -English (usually require 2 semesters), Its recommended, but not required, to also take biochemistry (and lab), microbiology (and lab), statistics, anatomy and physiology (and lab), genetics, pharmacology, and the like. The MCATs, by the way, are usually taken during junior year of your undergrad. You should be getting at least a 3.5 GPA while in undergrad and hopefully have a higher science GPA, at least a 3.7 (this is a GPA composed of your science classes only). To show you are serious about medical school, because it so competetive, you should also be volunteering at a hospital or doing research work at your university (talk to your advisor and they will tell you how to get involved in that). You could also shadow a physician. If medical sounds like too much, you can go the route of nurse practitioner in psychiatry. You will go to nursing school for your bachelor's degree, take the NCLEX-RN, get a few years of being an RN under your belt, and then go to graduate school to get your doctorate or masters in nursing practice and specialize in psychiatry. You will have less training than a medical doctor, but you can act and treat patients very similarly to a psychiatrist (including, in almost all states, prescribing medications). All that being said, if you would actually like to be a psychologist, that is different. They get a PhD, not an MD. They will get a bachelor's in psychology and go on to graduate school to eventually obtain their doctorate degree. They cannot prescribe medication but they can provide counseling or do research. There is also the route of councelor, social worker, etc. that will allow you to be licensed for counceling and therapy. This will require graduate school but is not as extensive as being a psychiatrist, psychologist, or nurse practitioner. Best Wishes! Tiffany

What is the minimum GPA for Ball State University?

Im a sophmore and last year as a freshman my GPA was a 2.4. I would like to know whats the minimum GPA to get accepted into BALL STATE UNIVERSITY.
Answer: There is no definite answer to your questions, the college states that there is no minimum GPA. But more than 75% of the admitted students were ranked in the top 10% of their high school graduating class with an average high school GPA of about a 3.67. There is no minimum gpa required to go to Ball State University, however for honors college and scholarships you need about a 3.6, if that gives you an idea. Your gpa is a bit low but if you do very well on your ACT, then that will increase your chances tremendously. A few years ago students were accepted with a 2.5 gpa. But today its believed that BSU will take you with a 3.0. So to be on the safe side i would aim to increase your GPA, but it is possible to be accepted with a lower GPA.

How do you go about defending yourself when you are trying to get an increase in child support?

I have been doing this pro se. My ex finally got a lawyer after 3 months of going back and forth to court. Now that he has a lawyer, how do I defend myself in a way to prove/convince the court that I am entitled to an increase in child support. It has been 5 1/2 years since the last support order and I know he has had a wage increase since then. I am in Illinois.
Answer: FUNNY how they always can afford an attorney though they claim they cant afford the support, huh? LOL! if he wants some put into an account of some sort, tell them its "child support" NOT "child trust fund". you dont need to defend yourself, all you have to do is arm yourself with the laws and facts, and you'll do just fine. get a note pad and write short notes in it. write down the costs of your utilities going up, gas going up, heating costs going up, rent going up, childrens clothing costing more as the child gets bigger, school supplies, school trips, school lunches, child eats more, drinks more, etc. heres a list of what i post here on yahoo to those who dont understand the cost of living for a child. ---------------------- you pay what? 400? 600? 900? ok, lets see... -rent; 1000 -electric 300-500 -food 400-600 -diapers 75-150 per month (fluctuates when baby is sick or teething) -formula 200 -heat 300-400 -phone/cable 100 -water bill 50 -sewer bill 50 -auto; (for doctors, dentists, take to school when they miss the bus, pick up when sick, pick up medicines, get food, take to activities) 200 -clothing/shoes/boots 200-400 every 2 to 3 months (seasonal and they grow) that doesnt even include toys, birthdays, dental, doctors, glasses, daycare, activities, hair cuts, school supplies, school lunches, school projects, class trips, class pictures, over the counter medicines, prescriptions, laundry det, dish det, cleaners, soap, shampoo, toothpaste, acne medicines, bras, pads, christmas, easter, halloween, tooth fairy, birthdays, etc. and sooo much more. ----------------------- makes 'em mad... because its true. ---------------------- every state has a "cost of living increase" every 2-4 years ( depending upon the state), so you'll be fine. Are trade schools a good way to to become a Electrician??

The school I plan on going to is approved by the state.
Answer: No they are not. That is because they cannot offer you the on the job training with a journeyman electrician that is necessary to get an electrician's license. They simply train by the book, and then leave it to you to FIND an apprenticeship. This is nearly impossible to do coming out of one of those institutions. You want to go to the Electrical Union Hall in your area. Look in the yellow pages and find it. Listed probably under United Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, or similarly . Ask for an application to enter into an apprenticeship program thru the Union. What will happen is they do offer those thru several companies who hire Union Electricians that hire Apprentices. You will be required to serve as an apprentice, plus go to class every week for about 3 hours and pass regular exams. The apprenticeship last nearly 4- 5 years to become an Electrician. If chosen for as an Apprentice, you will be paid a % of the journeyman's Salary. About 25% to start (.25 x $35 per hour ) and that percentage increases as your training progresses.

Luring Students Into Family Medicine

Most students going into medicine imagine that they will have daily contact with their patients; but the reality is that only a minority will end up as primary care physicians, causing what some experts say could be a critical shortage in the United States, where there are long waits in both doctors offices and emergency rooms. Why do you think the driving age should be increased?

I have to do a Persuasive Speech on increasing the driving age. Most people in my class think that it shouldnt be increased, so I have to give a speech on why it should. So, why do you think the driving age should be increased and if you can give me some articles or web site, that would be great?
Answer: The only way you will be able to justify raising the speed limit is with misdirection, lies and insults. Such as: "More than 5,000 U.S. teens die each year in car crashes." Misdirection -- numbers without any context. Let us add some context: 16-19: 10,682,000 drivers; 5,800 fatal accidents in 2006 20-23: 13,267,000 drivers; 7,400 fatal accidents in 2006 For the teens, that is 54.3 fatal accidents per 100,000 drivers; compared with 55.8 fatal accidents per 100,000 20-23 year old drivers. The Truth: Teen Drivers have a Lower Fatal Accident Rate than drivers in their early twenties. "The rate of crashes, fatal and nonfatal, per mile driven for 16-year-old drivers... according to the National Highway Safety Administration." First, who is this "National Highway Safety Administration"? There is a Government entity titled the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. A common way of lying is to cite "authorities" that have names similar to respected authorities. Second, where did they come up with the miles driven for teens and older people? Hmmm??? Sounds like someone simply made up some numbers to justify a biased opinion. "Many industrialized countries in Europe and elsewhere have a driving age of 17 or 18." And if everyone was jumping off a cliff would you join them? Europe, for the most part, has excelent public transportation systems that make driving an option rather than the necessity it is in many parts of the United States. "The brain does not really start to develop until a person is 18 years of age or older." If you have no facts, insult the audience. We send *children* to school because that is when people are most capable of learning. The brain fossilizes when we get older. The truth is that if you want to teach someone something you want to start at as early an age as practical. For driving, that would mean lowering the legal age to 14 or 12.

How do I become a certified avian veterinarian?

I really would like to be a certified avian vet or an exotic vet. What classes should I take for high school and college? Do I take regular animal medicine (for college)and then take another class? I cant find anything on Google, and if there were any avian or exotic animal vets who could help me, I would be grateful.
Answer: An avian veterinarian is a vet that specializes in birds. Birds have a different anatomy and medical needs from dogs and cats and many vets now specialize in avian medicine. If you want to become an avian vet, there are some additional things you need to know. 1 Get a bachelor's degree, preferably in a science like biology or chemistry, from an accredited college. Inquire with a career counselor to make sure you're taking the classes you need to get into veterinary school. 2 Consider doing internships, volunteering or getting a job working with birds to increase your chances of getting into a veterinary school. 3 Attend an accredited veterinary school for 4 years and take classes that emphasize avian medicine. Graduate with a doctorate in veterinary medicine. 4 Obtain a license by passing the North American Veterinary Licensing Exam (NAVLE). Your state may also require an additional exam so you can practice veterinary medicine in that state. 5 Complete 3 to 6 years in a residency program with an avian veterinarian or a veterinary practice that treats birds. You will need to publish articles and studies in veterinary journals. 6 Certify with the American Board Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP). To do this, you will need to pass an exam. type in how to be a cetified vet for excotic animals and info will pop up... .

What do you consider pros of the price of college education?

Im writing an argumentative essay about why the price of college education is worth it. It needs to be 4-5 pages and Im stuck on ideas? I need more to talk about.
Answer: Likely as a result of the current economy there are growing arguments as to the real value of a college education. Especially for those who attend non-elite schools. As a general observation in the area in which I live a predominantly affluent suburb of New York City, local civil servants especially police officers many of which only a 2-year college degree (Associate's degree) are earning between $150,000-$250,000 per year including overtime and let's not forget the pension they get at retirement which is not dependent on stock market fluctuations like private sector 401k's. This high pay rate is relatively common in the NY metro suburbs including northern NJ. Very few college graduates especially those with non-professional degrees are earning that kind of money. I am not saying getting your college degree is a bad thing, but as far as your return on investment it is not the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow that it once was. The cost of a college education has increased at a rate much higher than that of inflation and the middle-class who often doesn't qualify for government subsidies like Pell Grants because their families earn too much money yet really not enough to afford college often slip through the cracks. Usually low income students are entitled to the most aid, unless we are talking sports or academic scholarships. If the cost of your college education and paying for it is not an issue then certainly go for it, but don't look down on a good trade as a viable alternative. I have attached a link to an article that you may find interesting. I apologize for not providing you with pros but instead the cons, but this is the reality of college today. If you want to focus on graduates of elite schools and their return on investment, then you can discuss the pros of the cost of a college education. State schools also offer more reasonable tuition rates for their residents, you can focus on that as well. Good luck!

Whats the best way to prepare for graduate school this summer?

Im a Computer Engineering junior going into my seinor year with decent grades ~3.5 at a state university. Earlier this year, I applied for a bunch of internships but none of them really panned out, and I now have nothing to do over the summer. I was thinking about a taking GRE test prep class and maybe an English class at a local community college, but other than that I have nothing to do. What can I do right now to prepare myself and improve my chances of being accepted into a top graduate school?
Answer: I am a Chemical Engineer going into my Senior year also at state school. The main things to work on are maintaining or increasing GPA, obtaining good recommendations, writing a good essay, studying for the GRE, and networking! As for your summer, take a couple of classes you can relax in and study for the GRE. Grad school admissions will probably ask what summer experience you've gotten so its best to either volunteer or work for something computer-related, in your case. I would try to find a local computing company willing to take a volunteer worker with your CE knowledge or apply for a technical aide position. The key is to make the best of your experience this summer. If those don't work, try to obtain an undergrad research position at your school under a professor. Research might be also to pay for your hours of work or you can do it for volunteer, whatever will take up a lot of that free time you have. Stay busy and you'll be able to make the best of your time. To improve your chances in graduate school, follow the suggestions I spoke about and try talking with grad students you might know and professors. Invaluable experience can often be made inexpensive just by talking with them!

How does a leader convert a free country with a high standard of living into a totalitarian slave state?

Consider that: 1) The leader starts with a stable government, and a large middle class. 2) The leader is willing to take his time. 3) The leader wants to avoid instability in the process. 4) The leader wants to build a military empire by conquering other nations. 5) The leader wishes to put the vast majority of wealth in the nation under his control, and does not worry about maintaining the standard of living. What would be the important changes he would have to make in order?
Answer: 1) Leader should continually identify external threats to the nation that require a military response and an ever growing military industrial complex 2) Leader should continually identify domestic threats to the nation that require increased surveillance of society and imprisonment of political opponents and other critics. Creation of a Committee for Public Safety is essential to success of this policy. 3) Leader should promote a fractional reserve banking system that allows leader's friends to print free money for themselves. 4) Leader should require federal government to borrow money from private banks owned by friends even though treasury department controls printing of paper money. 5) Leader should allow citizenry access to an abundant supply of crystal methamphetamine, pornography, video games, cable television, NASCAR, WWF, prescription drugs, and corn syrup to keep citizens retarded. 6) Leader should amend the tax code to replace a progressive tax rate with a flat tax. Tax code should allow for special interests legislation to benefit specific favored industries. Tax credits, tax deductions, and tax legislation should be enacted to subsidize otherwise competitive industries such as real estate and insurance. Estate tax and gift tax should be repealed to allow hereditary wealth class. 7) Leader should pay lip service to public education for the masses while promoting and subsidizing charter schools, parochial schools, and private schools for leader's friends' children 8) Leader should allow citizenry access to easy credit for personal consumption while curtailing access to diminishing bankruptcy protections 9) Leader should allow federal and local governments to go deeply into debt 10) Leader should encourage illegal immigration through lax enforcement of immigration laws to keep labor costs low.

How did the American involvement in Vietnam change over the time?

A little project Im doing for my history class, and in your opinion how did the american involvement change over the time (starting from 1955 finishing with 1975) ???
Answer: I know that you asked to start with 1955, but it would be better to start with 1944 and work forward. That way you will see a mach greater change in US policies and involvement. In 1944 the US sent OSS operatives (the forerunner of the CIA) to train and arm the Peoples Army of Vietnam (PAVN) led by Ho Chi Minh and the school teacher, Giap. They fought against the Japanese and Vichy French during WW-2.OSS operatives were standing alongside Ho Chi Minh in September 1945 when he declared Vietnam an independent country. President Roosevelt had promised Ho Chi Minh that the US would recognise Vietnamese independence. President Truman reneged on the promise by Roosevelt and supported the French in retaking the five colonies in Indochina -- Laos, Cambodia and the three states that comprise current Vietnam, Tonkin, Annam and Cochin China. Talks between the Viet Minh (the political wing of the Nationalists) and the French collapsed in 1947 and some five months later the first clash between PAVN and French troops occurred. The US had been sending aid to France under the "Marshall Plan" and this included military aid. From late 1947 the US started directing that military aid to the French in Indochina and that included aircraft. From 1948 onwards US pilots flew supply missions for the French troops and from 1949 onwards flew combat missions. The French were defeated at Dien Bien Phu.Peace talks took place in Geneva where the "1954 Geneva Agreements on Indochina" were signed. Part of the agreements TEMPORAILY divided Vietnam into two zones -- The Viet Minh (and PAVN) to move north while the French moved south. Nationwide elections were to be held NO LATER than June 1956 for reunification of Vietnam. There was to be no military build-up on either side of the DMZ and a number of other terms. The US violated the Geneva Agreements even as they were being signed. The US sent CIA operatives into the northern zone to destroy major infrastructure such as dams, dikes, railway tracks and junctions, Coal and Oil depots etc along with carrying out a dis-information campiagn stating that the Viet Minh would start persecuting the Catholics (85% of Vietnamese are Mahayana Buddhists and 15% are Catholics). The US also installed the right-wing anti-communist Catholic Seminary student, Ngo Dien Diem, first as Prime Minister of the southern zone than as President of the illegally created (under international law and the Geneva Agreements) Republic of South Vietnam. The US started sending advisers (civilian from early 1955) and military from November 1955 (the new revised start date used by the US military for the Second Indochina War). On the advice of Eisenhower and the Secretary of State, John Foster Dallas, Diem refused to allow elections in the southern zone. Diem was a military dictator and started persecuting the Buddhist monks and other dissidents from the start. When elections were not held in 1956 people started protesting and they were beaten up, arrested and many killed. In December 1959 the National Liberation Front of Southern Vietnam (NLF) was formed at a conference just outside of Saigon. Some 5-6 months later the first clash between the NLF and the (South Vietnamese) ARVN took place when the NLF attacked a police station killing the police and capturing all the weapons and munitions. The US had increased advisers during the 1955-1960 period but in 1961 JFK increased the number dramatically and again in 1962. LBJ increased the number again in 1963 and 1964 and sent the "First Combat troops", US Marines, to Vietnam in April 1965 and then quickly built that number up with other forces to over 560,000 troops by 1968. The PAVN were were first sent south of the DMZ in August 1965 and the first clash between the US and the PAVN occurred at Ia Drang in November 1965. From 1970 onwards Nixon started a withdrawal of US troops and a "Vietnamization" of the war and started negotiating with the Hanoi government in secret in Paris from 1971 (with Kissinger). Most US troops were withdrawn from Vietnam by late 1973 (after a peace agreement that was supposed top have gone into affect in January 1973). There were still large bombing missions and air strikes taking place until late 1974 by US forces. US arms and munitions continued to flow freely to the ARVN troops even into 1975 in violation of the Congress. The last action by US troops in the "Second Indochina War" was in August 1975 in Cambodia over a ship. The Second Indochina War finished in December 1975 when the Pathet Lao took Vientiane, Laos. (Most people use the fall of Saigon in April 1975).

Whats the best thing to do to increase your chanes into west point?

What things would help someone increase there chances drasticly for getting into West Point?
Answer: You can do several things: work toward attaining a 3.5 (unweighted) GPA or above (obviously the higher the better). Learning to use spell check when asking questions would help as well. -Work toward getting a high SAT or ACT score. -Get involved in a sport at a competitive level in high school; you really need to earn a varsity letter -Get in top physical shape overall. To get into West Point (or any of the 5 service academies) you have to pass a reasonably tough physical fitness test. -Get involved in some activity that requires leadership skills such as Boy or Girl Scouts, Civil Air Patrol, JROTC, etc. The academies want you to show that you can lead and that you want to lead. -Contact the Senators for your state and Congressman for your district to find out what you need to do to apply for a nomination. Also find out if you are eligible for a Presidential or Vice-Presidential nomination.. Get as many nominations as you can. These are competitive and not based on who you know. For an idea of what is required, go to West Point's website USMA.edu and click one of the class years (found on the right side of the page under "Commandant", then click the link for that classes entering profile. Getting an appointment to a U.S. service academy is hard, hard work and the easy part is getting an appointment. But it is worth every bit of effort. Good luck!

Why does school just drain the energy from my body?

Its so time consuming, is this energy draining really that worth it ?. Why cant school start just a few hours later?
Answer: Hey That, I'm guessing from your question that you are someplace between 6th and 12th grade. That is a time in anyones life when their body becomes very good at functioning later into the evening, and bad at functioning in the early morning hours. There have been lots of studies done on this, unfortunately the schools will schedule the way that works best for them. Remember, the staff is on the opposite schedule you are, school might be a blast for you at 10pm, but your teachers and administrative people would be practically passed out on their desks. But take a minute and examine your question more closely: Why does school just drain the energy from my body?....It's so time consuming,..Why can't school start just a few hours later? If school started later, would it take less time, or just go later into the day? In order to accomplish the tasks, and meet your states minimum hour requirements, you would just be in the building later, but it would consume the same amount of time. As far as energy, would rebuilding the schedule casue school to magically not need energy from you? In most cases, people who feel drained at school are basically bored, or not getting enough sleep. If you're like my son, no matter what time he quits for the night and heads up to bed, he never seems to get into bed with the lights out before 1130pm every night. We could start getting ready for bed at 4 in the afternoon, and somehow, he would have 72 little things to do 'quick' and before you know it, it's 1130 and the lights are finally going out. Even though you might be a teenager, you can train your body to function better in the morning, but you have to train it to fall asleep a bit earlier in the night before you can make that happen, and that's where the real challenge is. As far as boredom goes, you might be in classes that are too easy for you. How much homework are you bringing home at night? If you frequently find you can finish all your work at school, then I would suggest there isn't enough for you to learn to keep your interest. It seems time consuming because the material is not interesting or challenging enough for you. You might be a candidate for something more advanced than what you are currently taking. There is also the fact that getting up in the morning at the last possible moment you need to in order to make it to school does not allow your brain to wake up in time for schools starting time. You can increase the rate that your brain comes into full functioning by actually doing something physical. Try getting up 5 minutes earlier and walking around the block before breakfast, anything that gets the muscles working early will give the brain some of the same effect. There have been lots of studies done on this too, it's the primary reason people in military training facilites always take a run or get in a workout each morning before starting the rest of the days activities, everyone does better. School doesn't have to be draining, but look around at the other students there, not all of them are dragging around in a funk the first 3 hours. See how they go about their days, and nights, you might come up with an idea. Good luck, Rudydoo

California Cuts Threaten Universities Reputation

LOS ANGELES -- Class sizes have increased, courses have been cut and tuition has been raised -- repeatedly. Fewer colleges are offering summer classes. Administrators rely increasingly on higher tuition from out-of-staters. And there are signs it could get worse: If a tax increase proposed by Gov. The Asian-American Affirmation

A COLLEGE education aims to guide students through unfamiliar territory — Arabic, Dante, organic chemistry — so what was once alien comes to feel a lot less so. But sometimes an issue starts so close to home that the educational goal is the inverse: to take what students think of as familiar and place it in a new and surprising - Asian-Americans, fasting-growing ethnic group in country, are tangled up in race-conscious college admissions in complicated ways; some see themselves as victims of affirmative action while others feel they benefit from it.
