What 16th century invention led peasants to complain it would take 10 days off their lives?
They just started doing these trivia things at work. Up til now, I have been able to find all the answers with ease. I have tried every search engine and every possible way of searching that I know. Please tell me how you were able to find it also!
Answer: The Gregorian calendar.
It proposed a 10-day correction should happen every 40 year period by deleting the Julian leap day on each of its ten occurrences during that period to provide a gradual return of the equinox to 21 March. The life expectancy then was about 40 years, so a person would lose 10 days off of their life.
The last day of the Julian calendar was Thursday October 4, 1582 and this was followed by the first day of the Gregorian calendar, Friday October 15, 1582. (1500's = 16th century).
I just know the calendar systems, but you can look it up on any on-line encyclopedia, I'm sure.
Strange how the general public views any change as a negative; true then, true still.

Barbados Gingerbread (Serves: 10)
The combination of molasses sugar, dark rum, ginger and citrus fruits make this a particularly delicious gingerbread.

3/4 cup full cream milk
1/2 cup good quality marmalade
2 size 7 eggs, beaten

10 THINGS TO KNOW FOR THURSDAY, Oct. 25, 2012 - The Denver Post
Oct 25, 2012 ... Your daily look at late-breaking news, upcoming events and stories that will be talked about on Thursday:1.
I am getting Lasik surgery on Thursday and was wondering if anyone could tell me what to expect the day of sur?
I am getting Lasik surgery on Thursday and was wondering if anyone could tell me what to expect the day of surgery? Im not worried about the results, just want to know what will happen and what I should expect to experience?
Answer: They will give you a pill to make you calm, a mild sedative. They don't want you twitching in the chair during the surgery.
Once you are calm the will probably put some drops in your eyes. Then they bring in "the Machine" once the machine is in place they will bring it in contact with your eye and you won't be able to see anything. That was the most unnerving part for me, once I had made up my mind to get the surgery.
Mine was a while ago but it took about 5 minutes to do the first eye and another 10 minutes or so to get the machine lined up on the second eye. Another 5 minutes for the second eye and it was over.
Then they will put in some more eye drops, antibiotic drops to prevent infection. They may or may not give you a vision test at this time.
They will probably have you come back the following morning to see how things are going. You will probably be very light sensitive due to minor eye irritation. I was unable to open my eyes even with dark gl;asses while outside the day after the surgery. Which wasn't good for me as I am very susceptible to motion sickness. I had to have my wife stop the car for 10 minutes just a 1/4 mile from the parking lot so I wouldn't get sick. Light sensitivity went away within 3 days and vision kept improving slowly over the next 3 weeks (although it was very good even 2 days after surgery.
My only side effect is that my vision shows small secondary images when my pupil is fully open (dim light or at night) makes it hard to read street signs at night or stargaze. Other than that it is wonderful.

What are some things to see in and around Houston?
I am heading to the Houston area for vacation and want to see if any of you knew of some neat things to see in and around the Houston area. We already are planning to go to the space center.
Answer: Here are some free or inexpensive things to do in downtown Houston and the nearby Museum District (I just answered another question about that area a few minutes ago):
Hermann Park is wonderful. Parking is free and it is centrally located. The Japanese Tea Garden is free and is lovely. The zoo is there. It costs $11, but has free Tuesday afternoons after 2:00. The Museum of Natural Science is there and costs $15 but is free every Tuesday from 2:00 - 8:00. The Museum of Arts Houston is there and costs $7, but is free on Thursdays from 10:00am to 9:00pm. A great date is the Miller Outdoor Theatre there, which has always free movies, plays and other shows, such as acrobats or dancers. It's romantic to take the little kid train through the park, or rent paddle boats, or just stroll or play on the swings. If you are downtown you can take the metro train to the museum district/Hermann Park. Rice University is there, too, as is the Children's Museum and Health and Science Museum, and the free Contemporary Arts Museum. I like shopping in the museum gift shops, even if I don't buy, and you can shop without paying the entrance fee.
I have taken my bike and ridden around the area of downtown near the concert halls and the Aquarium, over to the cool Glenwood Cemetery where Howard Hughes is buried, and watched the amazing skaters for hours at the Jamail Skatepark at Sabine and Memorial. You can catch the bats flying out from under the bridge every evening at dusk at Waugh Dr and Allen Parkway. Astros Baseball games are near downtown and you can get seats for $7 (but the food and drinks are expensive.) Three free audio tours of downtown: http://downtownhouston.org/guidedetail/a…

what are some good movies to watch at a slumber party?
im turning 13 this thursday and i was wondering if you have some suggestions of movies to watch.... i have netflix, and i was thinking moviesd like "how to get rid of a guy in 10 days" and "10 things i hate about u" any more suggestions?
Answer: If you want to watch a sad romance that will most likely make you cry, you can watch "The notebook".
One of my good friends is really into musicals so she insists we watch musicals like "Burlesque" and "Across the Universe".
My favorite movies are "little Miss sunshine", "super bad" and "pineapple express" but those most likely wont appeal to your age group. Try checking out the "recently added" movies on netflix or just going through the movies with your friends until you find one that you all will enjoy watching

What are some things i need to know before travelling to Dubai?
I am leaving in 5 days and going for only 5 days. What are the most interesting things to see and to do?
Answer: Desert Safaris
Trips to the desert in groups can be a great way to explore the desert and also know other people and find out a little bit more about the Arabic culture. Safaris are generally half day and can include an overnight stay in one of the Bedouin tents.
1. Wadi-Driving - This is a popular pastime with both residents and visitors. This involves exploring the wadis or dry beds of streams that flow after winter rains from the Hajar mountains.
2. Dune driving - Driving in sand can be a thrilling experience by itself and this combines the excitement of a roller coaster ride with the challenge of remaining mobile on the shifting surface. Courses in sand driving are available, with four-wheel-drive vehicles provided, along with expert instruction.
3. Sand-Skiing - Those with a penchant for speed, a head for heights and enthusiasm for an unusual sport will enjoy sand-skiing down the dunes of the Dubai desert.
4. Desert Feasts - Safaris are made more pleasurable by culminating into an evening with spectacular sunset views followed by a traditional Arab barbecue under the stars. You can even tailor your evening to your need and round it off with some great Arabic music and belly dancing, the smoking of hubble-bubble pipes and often a display of falconry.

Straight from the streets of London to the highways and byways of Dubai, these highly visual, vintage double-decker buses provide fun for everyone whatever the occasion. Answer: Global Warming? New Data Shows Ice Is Back
Tuesday, February 19, 2008 11:55 AM
By: Phil Brennan Article Font Size
Are the world's ice caps melting because of climate change, or are the reports just a lot of scare mongering by the advocates of the global warming theory?
Scare mongering appears to be the case, according to reports from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that reveal that almost all the allegedly “lost” ice has come back. A NOAA report shows that ice levels which had shrunk from 5 million square miles in January 2007 to just 1.5 million square miles in October, are almost back to their original levels.
Moreover, a Feb. 18 report in the London Daily Express showed that there is nearly a third more ice in Antarctica than usual, challenging the global warming crusaders and buttressing arguments of skeptics who deny that the world is undergoing global warming.
The Daily express recalls the photograph of polar bears clinging on to a melting iceberg which has been widely hailed as proof of the need to fight climate change and has been used by former Vice President Al Gore during his "Inconvenient Truth" lectures about mankind’s alleged impact on the global climate.
Gore fails to mention that the photograph was taken in the month of August when melting is normal. Or that the polar bear population has soared in recent years.
As winter roars in across the Northern Hemisphere, Mother Nature seems to have joined the ranks of the skeptics.
As the Express notes, scientists are saying the northern Hemisphere has endured its coldest winter in decades, adding that snow cover across the area is at its greatest since 1966. The newspaper cites the one exception — Western Europe, which had, until the weekend when temperatures plunged to as low as -10 C in some places, been basking in unseasonably warm weather.
Around the world, vast areas have been buried under some of the heaviest snowfalls in decades. Central and southern China, the United States, and Canada were hit hard by snowstorms. In China, snowfall was so heavy that over 100,000 houses collapsed under the weight of snow.
Jerusalem, Damascus, Amman, and northern Saudi Arabia report the heaviest falls in years and below-zero temperatures. In Afghanistan, snow and freezing weather killed 120 people. Even Baghdad had a snowstorm, the first in the memory of most residents.
AFP news reports icy temperatures have just swept through south China, stranding 180,000 people and leading to widespread power cuts just as the area was recovering from the worst weather in 50 years, the government said Monday. The latest cold snap has taken a severe toll in usually temperate Yunnan province, which has been struck by heavy snowfalls since Thursday, a government official from the provincial disaster relief office told AFP.
Twelve people have died there, state Xinhua news agency reported, and four remained missing as of Saturday.
An ongoing record-long spell of cold weather in Vietnam's northern region, which started on Jan. 14, has killed nearly 60,000 cattle, mainly bull and buffalo calves, local press reported Monday. By Feb. 17, the spell had killed a total of 59,962 cattle in the region, including 7,349 in the Ha Giang province, 6,400 in Lao Cai, and 5,571 in Bac Can province, said Hoang Kim Giao, director of the Animal Husbandry Department under the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, according to the Pioneer newspaper.
In Britain the temperatures plunged to -10 C in central England, according to the Express, which reports that experts say that February could end up as one of the coldest in Britain in the past 10 years with the freezing night-time conditions expected to stay around a frigid -8 C until at least the middle of the week. And the BBC reports that a bus company's efforts to cut global warming emissions have led to services being disrupted by cold weather.
Meanwhile Athens News reports that a raging snow storm that blanketed most of Greece over the weekend and continued into the early morning hours on Monday, plunging the country into sub-zero temperatures. The agency reported that public transport buses were at a standstill on Monday in the wider Athens area, while ships remained in ports, public services remained closed, and schools and courthouses in the more severely-stricken prefectures were also closed.
Scores of villages, mainly on the island of Crete, and in the prefectures of Evia, Argolida, Arcadia, Lakonia, Viotia, and the Cyclades islands were snowed in.
More than 100 villages were snowed-in on the island of Crete and temperatures in Athens dropped to -6 C before dawn, while the coldest temperatures were recorded in Kozani, Grevena, Kastoria and Florina, where they plunged to -12 C.
If global warming gets any worse we'll all freeze to death.

What are some interesting things to do in Paris?
I will be there for a few days in July, but all I have on my to do list is the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre. I like museums, but I dont want to spend all my time in them. What are the best things to do, historical and modern? And I need hotel and restaurant suggestions.
Answer: I'll let other people list tourist sights. Any good guidebook can tell you what the "must see" places are. So here are some slightly offbeat suggestions.
1) Have dinner with an icon of the Hippie era.
Jim Haynes is one of the founders of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and founder of the London Traverse Theatre Company. He started Suck, the sexual freedom newspaper, in Amsterdam in 1969 and taught Media Studies and Sexual Politics at the University of Paris 8.
He throws a dinner party every Sunday night. The crowd will include college professors, artists, the occasional rock star of famous actor. Give him a phone call or send him an email and you'll be invited. Details are on his website at: http://www.jim-haynes.com/index.htm
2)Go Rollerskating
Every Friday night except when there is rain, the City of Paris and the Paris Rollerskating Association organize a skate thru the streets of Paris from about 10 PM till 1 AM. Details are on this website:
http://www.pari-roller.com/index.php?p=101
3) Become a member of the least exclusive club in the world
The Café Metropole Club meets every Thursday after noon. membership is very exclusive...you have to show up. details can be found here: http://www.metropoleparis.com/aclub.html the people who show up are a coolection of expatriates and tourists. A good place to meet some nice people and get some good advice about current events.

10 Things to Know for Thursday. The Associated Press By The Associated Press The Post-Standard on November 08, 2012 at 8:22 AM, updated November 08, ...
Are their any two things in nature which are totally related or totally unrelated?
Is their anything that is 100% certain or not certain at all?
Tomorrow is Thursday is certain but not 100% what if day and night change?
Is "2 + 2 = 4?" is certain but what does this statement really mean?
Answer: Well, according to the universal law of gravity and the laws of electromagnetism, all objects in the universe can be related in some form. They just become so separate from each other that making the relation is unimportant. If a star in the Andromeda galaxy collapses and becomes a Neutron star, even long enough ago for us to observe it, we will not notice any change to life on our planet, unless we are all interested in following the astronomy discovery.
If two things were totally related, there would be no need to distinguish them as "two things".
Tomorrow is only Thursday because we define Thursday as such. If a ridiculously large external torque were applied to our planet such that our planet ceases to rotate on its axis, a day is no longer a concept.
2 + 2 = 4 only because we define it to work that way in standard base 10 arithmetic. Or you could say that we define 2 to equal 1 + 1, and we define 4 to equal 1 + 1 + 1 + 1, and simplifying that definition, 2+2=4. Simple arithmetic statements mean nothing more than they do at face value. They only serve a purpose to us because they help us understand how to model what we observe in our environment and make predictions.
I can think of situations where addition doesn't work as it normally does. Consider 9+5. What does it normally equal? 14, correct? Well, yes, according to the last time I checked. However, what if I stated it as "if it is nine o'clock in the morning, what time will it be five hours later?". And your answer would most likely be 2 o'clock in the afternoon. So, only paying attention to the numbers, 9+5=2. That is bizarre, isn't it?
How about this. Is 100 greater than 90? Most likely you answer yes. However, when I place a certain food item in the microwave and enter 90, the food reaches a higher temperature than if I place an identical food item in the microwave and enter 100. What do 100 and 90 actually mean in this context?

How long does it usually take to get things of ebay?
Bought an outfit on ebay on thursday, its coming from england and i live in ireland, should it b here by thursday or even before it?
Answer: Depends on how long your seller ships it, anything between 1-10 days, and what type of delivery it is, e.g first class, standard etc.
Also, when you've ordered it, weekends aren't classed as working days so if you bought it on thursday, its been 2-3 working days and should probably arrive tommorow or the day after if the seller has dispatched the item.
It should tell you when the seller has dispatched it under 'buying'.
Good luck! x

How can I work my way up to running 10 miles by the end of the summer?
I need to be able to run 10 miles at the end of the summer. Help me with a plan or tips etc. thanks!
Answer: Sarah, it would be helpful to know if you have any time issues here. However, presuming that time is not an issue:
The main thing is to be able to build up your endurance. One key is to do what we do when training for marathons, and that's LSD: Long Slow Distance.
When doing an LSD run (often just called a "long run"), you plan to run about a minute to 90 seconds per mile SLOWER than your normal 10K race pace. If you do not have a PR for 10K, then take you mile time and run about 2 minutes slower per mile.
After each 15-20 minutes at that pace, slow down to a walk in order to recover. That is, to get more oxygen into your body. Then start running again for another 15-20 minutes at the same pace as before. Keep alternating like that.
Each week, add another two miles to the overall length of your Long Run.
Now, if finishing time is an issue, here are a few tips to increase your speed:
Keep building up your long run until you reach 8 miles. Then, on alternate weekends, do "repeat miles". That is, run miles at your 5K race pace, taking a minute or two to pause after each mile. The number of repeat miles would be half of the distance of your long run from the previous week.
Thus, your chart of your weekend Long Run activity would look like this:
Starting with Week 1: 4 miles (or whatever you are able to do for starters).
Week 2: 6 miles
Week 3: 8 miles
Week 4: 4 repeat Miles
Week 5: 10 Miles
Week 6: 5 repeat Miles
Week 7: 12 miles
Week 8: 6 repeat miles
Week 9: 14 miles
Week 10: 7 repeat miles
The idea of going longer than your target distance is that you will be running them at a pace that is slower than normal. All you are trying to do here is to build up your endurance. The level of confidence you should have if you follow this pattern should be enormous. If you can do the workouts, you should be able to do the run!
By the way, one other rule to remember: NEVER have hard runs on consecutive days. Whatever day you pick for your Long Run should have an easy day scheduled on both sides of it. If you pick Sunday for your Long Run, make sure your runs on Saturday and Monday are always easy....relaxed pace..not too long as far as distance goes...no hills to speak of. Hill runs are good on Tuesday, with a good Tempo run on Thursday.Wednesday and Friday would be easier runs. If yor long run is on Sunday, consider using Saturday as a rest day. You will not lose any conditioning when taking one day of rest.
By the way, I always chose Sunday for my long runs because most of my marathons were run on Sundays. Whatever you do, make sure you keep it consistent.
Good luck and good running!
Please note that the pause after each of the "repeat miles" should be sufficient to let your heart rate return to near normal. Presuming you have a healthy heart, this should not take a long time. Just be sure to have a watch with you to check your pulse after each mile. Generally, wait about a minute or two for it to slow down before taking the pulse for the first time. After a while, you should get the hang of it.
