EDITORIAL; Is It Fixed Yet?

The immigration battle that ended this summer was a victory for the simple, straight-ahead approach. The supporters of comprehensive reform did not have the votes for their exotic blend of tough compassion, of punishing then rewarding illegal immigrants with a nonamnesty that everybody called amnesty. The Republicans bill-killing argument was: - Editorial blames Republican xenophobia for quashing attempts at immigration reform

Obama - True of False?

If some of this is true except for the specifics, feel free to correct them. Obama said that he would bring home the troops within 6 months. Then he changed it to some of the troops in 16 months, then 23 months...? Then decided to send 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan? Obama said that no bill would be voted upon any earlier than five days after the congress, senate had been given it to go over. His stimulus plan was given to the congress only an hour before it was to be voted upon because it was so urgent. After the vote Obama went on a four day vacation - before signing the bill? Obama said he would repeal the patriot act - then voted for its reauthorization and legalization? Obama said he would change NAFTA to make it better for the American workers then secretly told Canadian colleagues not to worry because this was just campaign rhetoric? These came from a film titled "The Obama Deception." It claimed to be a non-partisan film. I dont believe what I hear without looking into it. This was of course only one method I took to see what others thought/knew on the topic. Im liberal btw. Funny how some of the answers assumed I was a republican.
Answer: 1. Obama said he would begin extracting the troops from Turkey/Saudi Arabia/MiddleEast within six months. 23 months is the bulk of the combat troops (support will have to remain for a little longer) The Afghanistan troops will be troops moved fromother places in teh middle east... Thisis partof the extractionprocess. However, troops will be deployed in Pakistan - (these things cannot be setin stone, when the political climate is always changing over there - we have to be responsible in our retreat. 2. That wasno vacation. He was drumming up support frommembers of congress... You must realize that the Republican Congress has been HOSTILE to this administration. So much so, that seemingly underhanded tactics arenecessary to prevent filibusters and stalls. We finally have power, and personally, I would not care a bit if there were ZERO bi-partisanship. I would rather take it over like Grant took Richmond and go with it. Bi-partisanship can never be a good thing. 3. Mr. OBAMA: Mr. President, 4 years ago, following one of the most devastating attacks in our Nation's history, Congress passed the USA PATRIOT Act to give our Nation's law enforcement the tools they needed to track down terrorists who plot and lurk within our own borders and all over the world--terrorists who, right now, are looking to exploit weaknesses in our laws and our security to carry out even deadlier attacks than we saw on September 11th. We all agreed that we needed legislation to make it harder for suspected terrorists to go undetected in this country. Americans everywhere wanted that. But soon after the PATRIOT Act passed, a few years before I ever arrived in the Senate, I began hearing concerns from people of every background and political leaning that this law didn't just provide law enforcement the powers it needed to keep us safe, but powers it didn't need to invade our privacy without cause or suspicion. Now, at times this issue has tended to degenerate into an ``either- or'' type of debate. Either we protect our people from terror or we protect our most cherished principles. But that is a false choice. It asks too little of us and assumes too little about America. Let me be clear: this compromise is not as good as the Senate version of the bill, nor is it as good as the SAFE Act that I have cosponsored. I suspect the vast majority of my colleagues on both sides of the aisle feel the same way. But, it's still better than what the House originally proposed. This compromise does modestly improve the PATRIOT Act by strengthening civil liberties protections without sacrificing the tools that law enforcement needs to keep us safe. In this compromise: We strengthened judicial review of both national security letters, the administrative subpoenas used by the FBI, and Section 215 orders, which can be used to obtain medical, financial and other personal records. We established hard-time limits on sneak-and-peak searches and limits on roving wiretaps. We protected most libraries from being subject to national security letters. We preserved an individual's right to seek counsel and hire an attorney without fearing the FBI's wrath. And we allowed judicial review of the gag orders that accompany Section 215 searches. The compromise is far from perfect. I would have liked to see stronger judicial review of national security letters and shorter time limits on sneak and peak searches, among other things. Senator Feingold has proposed several sensible amendments--that I support--to address these issues. Unfortunately, the Majority Leader is preventing Senator Feingold from offering these amendments through procedural tactics. That is regrettable because it flies in the face of the bipartisan cooperation that allowed the Senate to pass unanimously its version of the Patriot Act--a version that balanced security and civil liberty, partisanship and patriotism. The Majority Leader's tactics are even more troubling because we will need to work on a bipartisan basis to address national security challenges in the weeks and months to come. In particular, members on both sides of the aisle will need to take a careful look at President Bush's use of warrantless wiretaps and determine the right balance between protecting our security and safeguarding our civil liberties. This is a complex issue. But only by working together and avoiding election-year politicking will we be able to give our government the necessary tools to wage the war on terror without sacrificing the rule of law. So, I will be supporting the PATRIOT Act compromise. But I urge my colleagues to continue working on ways to improve the civil liberties protections in the PATRIOT Act after it is reauthorized. 4. http://money.cnn.com/2008/06/18/magazines/fortune/easton_obama.fortune/

Why do republicans want to hurt small business?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100729/ap_on_bi_ge/us_small_business_lending WASHINGTON — President Barack Obamas election-year jobs agenda suffered a new setback Thursday when Senate Republicans blocked a bill creating a $30 billion government fund to help open up lending for credit-starved small businesses. The fund would be available to community banks with less than $10 billion in assets to help them increase lending to small businesses. The bill would combine the fund with about $12 billion in tax breaks aimed at small businesses. Democrats say banks should be able to use the lending fund to leverage up to $300 billion in loans, helping to loosen tight credit markets. Some Republicans, however, likened it to the unpopular bailout of the financial industry. Democrats had wanted to pass the bill before Congress leaves town for summer vacation, enabling them to reassure anxious voters back home that they were addressing the sluggish economy. Senate leaders continued to negotiate changes to the bill Thursday, but time was short. The Senate is in session for another week; the House is scheduled to adjourn Friday. Congressional Democrats started the year with ambitious plans to pass a series of bills designed to create jobs. But unless they reach a breakthrough on the small business lending bill, they will have little to show for it just a few months before midterm elections that will determine whether Democrats keep their majorities in the House and Senate. Congress has extended unemployment benefits for people who have been out of work for long stretches and passed a measure that gives tax breaks to businesses that hire unemployed workers. But many other initiatives stalled, in part because of concerns they would add to the growing national debt. Obama lobbied for the small business lending bill during a trip Wednesday to Edison, N.J. But Senate Democrats fell short of the necessary 60 votes Thursday to end a Republican filibuster. The vote was 58 to 42, with all 41 Republicans voting to continue the filibuster. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., also voted to continue the filibuster, but only as a procedural step that allows him to call up the bill again. Much of the bill had bipartisan support, but Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said Democrats were blocking GOP amendments. Reid said Republican demands kept changing. "It takes a lot of effort to make a partisan issue out of a bill that should have broad bipartisan support," McConnell said. "But our friends on the other side have managed to pull it off. Theyve outdone themselves." Reid said he offered to hold votes on some Republican amendments, only to see the list of GOP demands grow. "What we are simply trying to do is pass a bipartisan bill that will help small business owners create jobs," Reid said. "We went to great lengths to address what Republicans claimed were their concerns." GOP amendments included measures to beef up border security, impose a government spending cap and lower the estate tax, which is scheduled to return next year with a top rate of 55 percent on estates larger than $1 million. One Republican amendment would repeal a new tax reporting requirement for businesses that was included in the massive health care overhaul enacted last spring. Democrats, meanwhile, have added about $1.5 billion in disaster relief for farmers who lost crops in 2009, a measure sponsored by Sen. Blanche Lincoln, D-Ark. Democrats also wanted to add an amendment to settle long-running class-action lawsuits brought by black farmers and American Indians. One lawsuit concerned the governments management and accounting of more than 300,000 trust accounts of American Indians. The other is a discrimination lawsuit brought by black farmers against the Agriculture Department. The cost of settling them both: about $4.6 billion. The small business tax cuts in the bill include breaks for restaurant owners and retailers who remodel their stores or build new ones. Other businesses could more quickly recover the costs of capital improvements through depreciation. Long-term investors in some small businesses would be exempt from paying capital gains taxes. Much of the bill would be paid for by allowing taxpayers to convert 401(k) and government retirement accounts into Roth accounts, in which they pay taxes up front on the money they contribute, enabling them to withdraw it tax-free after they retire. Taxpayers who convert accounts this year would pay the taxes in 2011 and 2012, generating an estimated $5.1 billion.
Answer: How can you breathe with your head stuck up there?? We small businesses dont need LOANS, we need Government to either lead, follow or to get the hell out of our way. We were doing just fine before the Liberal Congress started tinkering with the tax code, and Ignored thongs whilst Fannie and Freddie evaporated every penny of working capital in the US... a feat accomplished by Barney Franks and crew, who at last check.. aint a REP.. but a DEM...

Border Deal by 2 in G.O.P. Lifts Chances of Immigration Bill

WASHINGTON — The prospects for Senate approval of a broad overhaul of the nation’s immigration laws improved on Thursday after two Senate Republicans worked out a deal on a plan to strengthen border security with the bipartisan group of eight senators that drafted the original bill, raising hopes that the new agreement could build Republican - By ASHLEY PARKER

want to see what my senator wrote ME?

Dear Linda: Thank you for writing me regarding immigration policy. I share your belief that our current immigration laws should be reformed. I have heard from constituents on both sides of this issue, all of whom make passionate arguments. I have concluded that we must pass comprehensive, compassionate reform that reaffirms the rule of law and brings the undocumented population out of hiding through an earned path to citizenship. I worked with Senator Martinez (R-FL) on an editorial published in the Wall Street Journal on December 15, 2005 that argues for comprehensive reform (see enclosure). We also sent a letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee making much the same argument. In my view, the principles put forth by Senators McCain and Kennedy in their bill, S. 1033, created the right foundation for a permanent solution. Senators McCain and Kennedy argue that immigration problems in our country require a three-pronged response: 1) strengthen border security; 2) establish a path to legalization that includes fines and adherence to the rule of law for immigrants and their families who may have entered the United States illegally but are now contributing and responsible members of society; and, 3) create a "guest worker" program whereby American businesses can temporarily recruit foreign workers for jobs that American workers cannot or refuse to fill. Because I agree with that framework, I have co-sponsored the McCain/Kennedy bill, and I can assure you that I will continue to work with Senators Kennedy and McCain and my Senate colleagues to push comprehensive immigration reform. The areas where Senator Martinez and I would like to strengthen the McCain-Kennedy proposal include more specific improvements in border enforcement as well as making it mandatory for employers to use a new, efficient, electronic system for verifying the legality of their workers. Going forward, a new guestworker system should pay people fairly in order to avoid pushing wages down. We believe a functional, fair guestworker program would discourage illegal immigration. But let me be clear. Like our nations religious and civil rights communities, I oppose enforcement-only approaches like Rep. Sensenbrenners bill, H.R. 4437. I also oppose the construction of a fence or wall along the U.S.-Mexico border because it would be too expensive, ineffective, and hurt our relations with Mexico. The fence proposed in H.R. 4437 would run 698 miles at a cost of at least $3.2 billion. The House bill was opposed by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the AFL-CIO, U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, American Jewish Committee, and over 200 other faith-based, business, labor, religious, local governments, civil rights, and ethnic groups. The common denominator of their opposition and mine is that the bill would have a profoundly negative impact on workers, on businesses, on families, and on local communities without making the country safer or fixing any part of the broken immigration system. The President and Congress must look at immigration reform in a comprehensive manner to guarantee not just that enforcement and border security are enhanced but also that all workers, including immigrant and â€Å“guest” workers, are treated fairly and are afforded basic labor protections, and that work is rewarded and families are united. I fought for these principles when I spoke on the floor and offered amendments during the recent Senate debate on this issue, and I will continue to urge my Senate colleagues to pass comprehensive immigration reform as soon as possible. I look forward to working with the people of Illinois, my colleagues in Congress, and the President on these issues during my time in Washington. Together I am confident that we will be able to shape immigration policies that benefit both new immigrants and American citizens. Again, thank you for contacting me. How in troubIe are Libs that they cant even get 60 votes to defeat the GOP Cornyn Amendment?

LMFAO Libs cant even get 60 votes to defeat the tough GOP border security amendment. Yet, they think they can ram through their bill for Amnesty and then have it pass by a GOP House Majority. LOLOLOL The U.S. Senate defeated a Republican change to immigration legislation that would prohibit undocumented immigrants from gaining legal status until the Department of Homeland Security could show it had “effective control” of the borders for six months. The measure, offered by Senator Charles Grassley of Iowa, was rejected on a 43-57 vote. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-06-13/senate-rejects-border-security-change-to-immigration-bill.html LOL and that is also considering the Libs added a Gay Amendment for gay couples. LMFAO Bye Bye DREAM Act Adios!!!!!!!!!!!!! Charles: LOL Tell that to the illegal who cant go to college with federal loans now! Tell him it doesnt amoutn to much he has to keep mowing my lawn for pennies! Momanuk: LOL. You assumed I meant to get passed the Senate with 60. While that will be a feat will not even come close to Libs needing a majority in the US House where we have 26 extra seats than you do. Good Luck! You will need it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Center holds as Senate kills GOP border security amendment to ...

Beating back the first attempt to substantially change the pending immigration bill's border security measures, the Senate on Thursday voted down a Republican effort to require strict security goals are met for six months ...

What legislation has Barak Obama authored?

The guys looks good and is articulate but what exactly has he done as Senator? Im not talking about how he voted. Im talking about what hes authored...and I dont think its much.
Answer: Education In April 2005, Obama sponsored his first Senate bill, the "Higher Education Opportunity through Pell Grant Expansion Act", S. 697. Entered in fulfillment of a campaign promise to help needy students pay their college tuitions, the bill proposed increasing the maximum amount of Pell Grant awards to $5,100. Provision for Pell Grant awards was later incorporated into the "Deficit Reduction Act", S. 1932, signed by President George W. Bush on February 8, 2006. Immigration Obama was a co-sponsor of the "Secure America and Orderly Immigration Act", S. 1033, introduced by Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) on May 12, 2005. Obama also supported a later revision, the "Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act", S. 2611, passed by the Senate on May 25, 2006. He offered three amendments that were included in the bill passed by the Senate: (1) to protect American workers against unfair job competition from guest workers; (2) require employer verification of their employees' legal immigration status through improved verification systems; and (3) fund improvements in FBI background checks of immigrants applying for U.S. citizenship. In December 2005, the U.S. House of Representatives had passed a parallel bill, H.R. 4437, which provides for enhanced border security measures, but does not address the broader immigration reform proposals contained in the Senate's bill. Congressional inaction on this legislation has become a heated issue in the lead-up to the 2006 midterm elections, with representatives of both major parties holding the other party responsible for the stalemate. Transparency Obama joined with Senators Coburn (R-OK), Carper (D-DE), and McCain (R-AZ) in sponsoring the "Federal Funding Accountability and Transparency Act", S. 2590, to provide citizens with a website, managed by the Office of Management and Budget, listing all organizations receiving Federal funds from 2007 onward, and providing breakdowns by the agency allocating the funds, the dollar amount given, and the purpose of the grant or contract. President George W. Bush signed the bill, also referred to as the "Coburn-Obama Transparency Act", into law on September 26, 2006.

Did the Senate pass a bill giving illegal aliens Social Secuity?

Answer: It was defeated in 2006..no cookies for illegal aliens:) /////////////////////////// Senate blocks effort to limit benefits to immigrants WASHINGTON, May 18 (Reuters) – The U.S. Senate blocked an effort on Thursday to limit Social Security benefits for illegal immigrants who would become permanent residents under a sweeping immigration overhaul being debated by lawmakers. The Senate immigration bill would give millions of the estimated 11 million to 12 million illegal immigrants in the country a path to citizenship as long as they pay a fine and back taxes and meet such requirements as learning English. The Senate is considering a number of amendments to the bill and was expected to vote later on Thursday on a measure offered by Sen. James Inhofe, an Oklahoma Republican, that would make English the national language. President George W. Bush backs a comprehensive approach close to what the Senate is considering and traveled to Yuma, Arizona, a front line for illegal crossings from Mexico, to shore up support for his plan to deploy up to 6,000 National Guard troops along the border. http://sweetness-light.com/archive/senate-gives-illegals-aliens-social-security

What will Obama, Calderon say about this immigration law?

It seems you don’t need to be located on the U.S.-Mexico border or have a high-profile case of an illegally present college student — or even to have a Republican majority — for your state legislature to decide something has to be done about immigration. From the Boston Globe: With one lawmaker citing President Lincoln’s respect for the rule of law, the Massachusetts Senate passed a far-reaching crackdown this afternoon on illegal immigrants and those who would hire them, going further, senators said, than any immigration bill proposed over the past five years. In a surprising turn of events, the legislation replaced a narrower bill that was passed Wednesday over the objections of Republicans. The measure, which passed on a 28-10 vote as an amendment to the budget, would bar the state from doing business with any company found to break federal laws barring illegal immigrant hiring. It would also toughen penalties for creating or using fake identification documents, and explicitly deny in-state college tuition for illegal immigrants. The amendment would also require the state’s public health insurance program to verify residency through the Department of Homeland Security, and would require the state to give legal residents priority for subsidized housing. The focus on state benefits is an important one. We absolutely need better security on the border. But we also have to face the fact that when we extend any government-provided benefits to illegal immigrants, we are offering people an additional incentive to enter our country illegally. As Milton Friedman once said, “you can have immigration reform, but you can’t have open immigration without largely the elimination of welfare.” We have to get that part right, along with border security, before we can start debating whether to take such steps as adjusting the number of legal immigrants we accept, or ending the practice of birthright citizenship. And, of course, the thornier issue of what to do with the millions of illegal immigrants already here.
Answer: Obama, Calderon are both sell outs.Obama does not say anything about Mexico who will ask suspected illegals for their papers and no papers, Mexico will deport them.Mexico's position is don't do as we do-do as we say you will do. How come activists are not boycotting Mexico they have laws like AZ that are already part of Mexico laws at the same time, activists are NOT boycotting Mexico, are not saying anything nagative about what Mexico is doing.

Proposals From Both Sides Fail in Immigration Debate

The Senate on Wednesday killed proposals from the left and the right for major changes in a comprehensive immigration bill, but the outlook for the bill remained in doubt as senators prepared for a crucial vote on whether to end debate and move to final passage. Democrats failed in efforts to promote family unification by providing more visas to - Senate Democrats and Republicans fail in attempts for major changes in immigration overhaul bill; bill would give $4.4 billion for border security, increase penalties for hiring illegal immigrants, create new guest worker program and offer legal status to millions of illegal immigrants; bill now faces crucial vote on whether to end debate and move to final passage (M) - By ROBERT PEAR

Immigration: From Talking Point to Sore Point

It was a moment that crystallized Senator Hillary Rodham Clintons struggles in Tuesday nights debate. Questioned about a plan to grant drivers licenses to illegal immigrants, Mrs. Clinton at first seemed to defend it, then suggested she was against it, until finally, pressed for a direct answer, she accused the moderator, Tim Russert, of playing - Granting of drivers licenses to illegal immigrants underscores tensions for Sen Hillary Rodham Clinton as she tries, during Democratic debate, to court various interest groups; her verbal twists and turns provide opponents with fodder for their central critique: that she is trying to have it both ways; she has recently intensified efforts to win Iowa caucuses, where influx of illegal immigrants has raised concerns among residents, but she is also courting Hispanic voters who are expected to wield greater clout through early races in New York and California; campaign is moving to blunt criticism of debate performance, offering clarification of her remarks as she generally supports New York Gov Eliot Spitzers plan to create tiered system of licenses that would allow illegal immigrants to legally drive; photos (M) - By MARC SANTORA; Adam Nagourney contributed reporting from Washington, and Nicholas Confessore and Marjorie Connelly from New York.

UPDATE: ROLL CALL VOTE ADDED – Senate kills Cornyn border ...

So McCain, Graham, and Flake all voted to kill the amendment. Ugh. Rubio voted for the border security amendment, as he suggested he would last night. At this point I'm quite sure he won't vote for cloture on this Senate bill.

CRITICS IN SENATE VOWING TO ALTER IMMIGRATION BILL

As the Senate began work on a comprehensive immigration bill, lawmakers from both parties demanded substantial changes in the legislation on Monday and forced Senate leaders to extend debate beyond the Memorial Day recess. From the moment debate started, the crosscurrents buffeting the bill were evident. The intense lobbying since the bill emerged - Immigration bill worked out during three months of bipartisan negotiations is now being attacked by lawmakers from both parties; intense lobbying since bill emerged is just sample of what lawmakers will hear as they return home to their districts for Memorial Day recess; supporters and opponents of bill agree only on one fact: that nation has lost control of its borders; outlook for bill is uncertain; measure, as it now stands, would offer legal status to most of 12 million illegal immigrants, strengthen security at border and increase penalties for employers of illegal immigrants; Democrats will offer amendments to eliminate or scale back provisions that would allow hundreds of thousands of temporary foreign workers to be admitted to US each year; Republicans draft amendments to scale back legalization program and to designate English as national language; photo (M) - By ROBERT PEAR and MICHAEL LUO

What are some opinions about the immigration bill in the Senate.?

Im very confused on what to think about this bill. I think we do need to secure the border, but Im not sure if security of the border should be tied to immigration reform. Should the illegals already here be given amnesty (no matter what you call it)? Should employers be penalized/prosecuted for employing illegals? Would like a variety of opinions (hopefully with supporting facts) to help me decide which way to go.
Answer: There are many parts to this bill: Here is a recap so far, and nothing but nothing is final. No I certainly do not think employers should be penalized by the way. We are only required to get a green card from them, not make sure that they are real or fake documents. We are not the INS. The Senate continues consideration of amendments to the comprehensive immigration reform bill. Here is a summary of amendments considered since the last update of May 17. More amendments from May 17 Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) offered an amendment (for Senator Ted Stevens (R) of Alaska) that would delay until June 1, 2009 the deadline by which persons traveling between the U.S. and Canada or Mexico would be required to carry a passport or other similar secure document. That amendment was accepted by voice vote. Amendment: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d109:SP4018:/ Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA) offered an amendment that would include Poland in the Visa Waiver program (in which travelers from certain countries (mainly in Europe) do not have to apply for a visa to travel for short periods to the U.S. That amendment was accepted by voice vote. Amendment: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d109:SP4000:/ Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) offered an amendment that would delete the ability of immigrants coming to the U.S. in a temporary worker program to petition for a green card on their own after four years. This amendment narrowly passed by a vote of 50 to 48. (However, this amendment was mostly overturned by a subsequent amendment, see below.) Amendment: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d109:SP3965:/ Vote: http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=109&session=2&vote=00128 Amendments from May 18 Senator Edward Kennedy (D-MA) offered an amendment that mostly rolled back the Cornyn amendment passed on May 17. The amendment restores the ability of immigrants coming to the U.S. in the temporary worker program to petition for a green card after four years, but the Department of Labor would have to certify that there is no available U.S. worker to perform the job. That amendment passed 56 to 43. Amendment: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d109:SP4065:/ Vote: http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=109&session=2&vote=00129 Senator John Ensign (R-NV) offered an amendment that would bar undocumented immigrants who become legalized from receiving Social Security benefits for which they have paid through payroll taxes during the time they were undocumented. There was a motion to table that amendment, which was agreed to by a vote of 50 to 49. Amendment: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d109:SP03985:/ Vote on Motion to Table: http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=109&session=2&vote=00130 Senator Daniel Akaka (D-HI) offered an amendment that would exempt the unmarried and married sons and daughters of naturalized Filipino World War II veterans from the numerical limitations on family-based immigration. This amendment was accepted by voice vote. Amendment: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d109:SP4029:/ An amendment by Senator David Vitter (R-LA) would tighten somewhat the requirements for documenting eligibility for the legalization program. This amendment was approved by voice vote. Amendment: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d109:SP3964:/ Senator James Inhofe (R-OK) offered an amendment that would make English the “national language” of the U.S. The amendment states that, unless specifically required by law, no person has a “right” to have government services or materials provided in a language other than English. Additionally, the Inhofe amendment strikes the option that an undocumented immigrant who is applying for legalization, or a participant in the temporary worker program who is self-petitioning for permanent residence show that he or she is “satisfactorily pursuing a course of study” in English and civics. Instead, these individuals will have to meet the requirements of persons applying for naturalization (they will have to know enough English and Civics to pass the naturalization test). This aspect of the amendment, if not fixed, threatens to make the legalization program less effective. The amendment also contains provisions that may make the naturalization test (for persons applying for citizenship) more difficult. Unfortunately, this amendment passed after several hours of debate by a vote of 63 to 34. Amendment: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d109:SP4064:/ Vote: http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=109&session=2&vote=00131 Subsequent to the Inhofe amendment, Senator Ken Salazar (D-CO) offered an amendment in an attempt to ameliorate the Inhofe amendment. This amendment passed by a vote of 58 to 39. Amendment: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d109:SP4073:/ Vote: http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=109&session=2&vote=00132 The potential effects of the Salazar and Inhofe amendments, and how they would interact, are still being analyzed. Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY) offered an amendment to specify allocation of certain fees established by the bill. The amendment was rejected by a vote of 43 to 52. Amendment: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d109:SP04072:/ Vote: http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=109&session=2&vote=00133 A competing amendment by Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) would, among other things impose an additional $750 fee on legalization applicants, to be placed in an account that would be used to reimburse states for health and education services provided to non-citizens. That amendment passed by a vote of 64 to 32. Amendment: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d109:SP04038:/ Vote: http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=109&session=2&vote=00134 The Coalition Passes another Test Late Thursday evening, there was an amendment offered by Senator John Cornyn (on behalf of Senator Jon Kyl, R-AZ) that provided another test for the coalition of Democratic and Republican Senators who have been backing comprehensive reform in the Senate. After some drama concerning the White House’s position on the amendment, the coalition beat back yet another attempt by hardliners to gut comprehensive reform. The Kyl amendment would have prohibited persons participating in the temporary worker program from ever adjusting to permanent status. If approved, the amendment would have deleted a key worker protection in the temporary worker program: the ability to adjust to permanent residence (for those who want to remain in the U.S.) and thus to not have to depend on a particular employer for continued status. Senator John McCain offered a motion to table this amendment, and his motion passed by a vote of 58 to 35. Amendment: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d109:SP03969:/ Vote on the Motion to Table: http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=109&session=2&vote=00135 For an interesting story on the drama surrounding this amendment, see the Washington Post story posted on our Web site at: http://www.immigrationforum.org/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabid=693 Positive Amendments Coming Up: Contact Your Senators The above links to the recorded votes on the various amendments will give you information on how your senators have voted thus far. Please consider thanking them, or calling them to task, depending on how they voted. For the week coming up, here are three positive amendments that may come to the floor. If you can, please contact your Senators about these amendments. (There are more amendments, many of which have been the subject of action alerts being circulated on various e-mail lists. The following is not a comprehensive list.) Feingold amendment on stay of removal: Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI) will offer an amendment to strike a provision of the bill (Section 227(c)) that would prohibit courts from staying the removal of an alien who has received a final order of removal. As the bill now reads, asylum seekers and others could be removed while their appeals are still pending. The Feingold amendment deletes that provision. Call your Senator to urge him or her to support the Feingold amendment to strike Section 227(c). Section 227(c) would: nullify the judicial review process by removing people from the country before their cases have been heard; send asylum seekers back into the hands of their persecutors and, possibly, to their deaths; and cause the U.S. to violate the United Nations Convention and Protocol Relating to the Status of Refugees, which prohibits the return of individuals to countries where they will face persecution. (Thanks to the American Immigration Lawyers Association for the above talking points.) Amendment: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d109:SP4083:/ Lieberman amendment protecting asylum seekers from felony prosecution for using a false passport: Senator Joseph Lieberman (D-CT) intends to offer an amendment that would fix a provision of the bill that would harm persons who affirmatively apply for asylum. There is a provision in Title II of the bill (Section 208) that would make it a felony for someone to use a false passport to enter the U.S. An exception was made for asylum seekers who are apprehended at the border, but not for those already in the U.S. who apply for asylum. Senator Lieberman’s amendment would make the exception apply to all asylum seekers and persons in other specially protected groups. His amendment would prevent the prosecution of asylum seekers for this offense until after their applications were denied and thereafter leave prosecution to the discretion of authorities (as opposed to requiring prosecution, as the bill is currently worded). Ask your senators to support the Lieberman amendment. Asylum seekers often cannot obtain proper travel documents to make their escape, and should not be prosecuted for relying on what documents they can obtain in order to save their lives. Amendment: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d109:SP4036:/ Leahy amendment on injunctive relief: The compromise immigration reform bill places unrealistic deadlines on courts when immigrants seek a court injunction to provide relief in cases where the immigrants claim they are being harmed by a government decision. If the bill is not changed, many immigrants will not be able to gain court-ordered relief, not because their case has no merit, but because the court will not have sufficient time to consider the case and what remedies to apply. Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) will offer an amendment to delete from the bill the provisions limiting injunctive relief. Call Senator Leahy’s office and encourage him to go forward with the amendment. Ask your Senator to support the Leahy amendment on injunctive relief. Immigrants who suffer from improper decisions by the government should be able to gain relief from the courts. Amendment: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d109:SP3972:/ You can find the phone number of your Senator’s office here: http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm More information For more interesting reading on how the politics of the Senate debate are playing out around the country, see the story from the Washington Post on our Web site, “Bush Is Losing Hispanics' Support, Polls Show” http://www.immigrationforum.org/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabid=623 Also see this editorial from the New York Times: http://www.immigrationforum.org/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabid=809 ===================================================== National Immigrant Solidarity Network No Immigrant Bashing! Senators Reach Border Security Deal in Immigration Bill - Bloomberg

14 hours ago ... The agreement on border security, described on the Senate floor ... “What this amendment reflects is what we know will work,” Rubio said on ...

Reid Blocks Senate Vote on Border Security Amendment to ...

(Breitbart) – On Wednesday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) blocked a vote on the border security amendment to the “Gang of Eight” immigration bill offered by Senate Judiciary Committee ranking member Sen.

What programs, specifically, has Kerry introduced in congress since the Pres election.?

Answer: Who cares! What have the repubs introduced, and they own every branch of government, that didn't screw everyone but the wealthy? On the first day the Senate was in session for legislative activity, Senator Kerry introduced a bill to provide health insurance for the 11 million children in America who currently have none. It's the critical first step to ensure that all kids have access to quality health care and the opportunity to succeed in life. Tomorrow John Kerry will offer an amendment to the Immigration Reform Bill to add 1,000 additional Border Patrol agents -- bringing the total up to 3,000 new agents this year – plus add an additional 100 helicopters and 250 power boats to secure America’s borders. “We know we need a comprehensive answer to immigration that includes tightening border security, but putting another burden on the backs of men and women who are serving their second tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan isn’t the right answer,” said John Kerry. “The right answer is to listen to the 9/11 Commission and put the border patrol agents we need right there on the border.” John Kerry’s Rapid Response Amendment would allow the Secretary of Homeland Security to deploy up to 1,000 additional border patrol agents if the governor of a border state declares an international border security emergency and requests additional agents. In addition to the at least 100 additional helicopters and 250 power boats, as well as training for their use, it requires one police-type vehicle per every three border patrol agents and requires that each vehicle have a portable computer. It also requires that all agents have a two-way, clear and encrypted radio, a GPS device, night vision equipment when applicable, high quality body armor, reliable and effective weapons, and uniforms appropriate for climate conditions. Kerry’s amendment is similar to legislation offered in the House by Congressman Silvestre Reyes (D-Texas), who is a former Border Patrol agent, and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas), Ranking Member on the Subcommittee on Immigration, Border Security, and Claims WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Senator John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Senator Ken Salazar (D-Colo.) introduced ethics reform legislation that takes direct aim at the culture of corruption in Washington by denying taxpayer-funded pension benefits to Members of Congress who break the public trust and are convicted of crimes such as bribery, conspiracy, or other serious ethics offenses. Kerry said, “It is disgusting that hardworking taxpayers are funding the retirement of convicted criminals like Duke Cunningham. No wonder people look at Washington and know this city is broken. The American people are forced to send pension checks to criminals.” The Congressional Pension Accountability Act – or “The Duke Cunningham Act” – was authored by Kerry and is co-sponsored by Senator Ken Salazar. Under current law, only a conviction for a crime against the United States, such as treason or espionage, causes U.S. Representatives and Senators to lose their Congressional pensions. Members of Congress convicted of white collar crimes still receive these federal retirement benefits. The Kerry legislation will change existing law to insure that the Congress no longer rewards unethical behavior at the expense of American taxpayers. Senator John Kerry announced today a new funding push he is making in Congress to aid returning war veterans. Kerry made the announcement today at the premier of the groundbreaking new documentary on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, “Hidden Wounds,” by New England Cable News. Kerry was joined at the premier today by former Senator and decorated veteran Max Cleland, military veterans, the commanders of the Massachusetts and New Hampshire National Guard, and survivors. Proposal: Add $100 million in the FY06 Emergency Supplemental Appropriations Act to Vet Centers for expanded PTSD Screening and Treatment Programs What: The National Guard in New England has pioneered innovative solutions to deal with the stress and strains experienced by all soldiers returning from active-duty in combat zones. Under an initiative developed first by the New Hampshire National Guard, and since adopted in Massachusetts, and under consideration elsewhere, service members are required to undergo an in-state counseling and readjustment program, part of which includes one-on-one counseling with a counselor from a Vet Center. Why: Not all the wounds of war are physical. In July of 2004, the New England Journal of Medicine reported that one-in-six combat veterans in Iraq and Afghanistan showed symptoms of major depression, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress disorder. A more recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that 19.1% of returning veterans from Iraq, and 11.3 percent of veterans retuning from Afghanistan, reported mental health problems. We know from historic experience that soldiers will return from war having to navigate a range of emotional issues, regardless of whether or not they are diagnosed with PTSD. In FY2004, Vet Centers served 125,859 veterans in more than 1 million visits. Even without the war in Iraq, Vet Centers were already overloaded with cases. Last year alone, Vet Centers expected to provide services to nearly 14,000 veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan in almost 44,000 office visits—more than 3,800 of these veterans were PTSD clients. In testimony last year, VA officials noted that, except for cost of living increments, Vet Center budgets have not increased in the last ten years. WASHINGTON - The Senate adopted several amendments offered by Senator John Kerry (D-Mass.) to the Defense Authorization Bill, which passed Tuesday. In addition to Kerry legislation that will strengthen small businesses and protect our troops and military families, the Senate also approved a measure offered by Kerry that demands the Director of National Intelligence to report on the alleged CIA clandestine detention facilities. A summary of Kerry’s adopted amendments to the DoD Authorization bill is below: Kerry amendment adds $10 million to accelerate R&D of military technology Increased funding of “Project Sheriff” will help keep troops safe on the ground Kerry’s amendment will secure an additional $10 million in funding for “Project Sheriff ,” an innovative program aimed at adapting new technology for our troops in Iraq. These technologies will work to meet the current needs of warfighters in Iraq and enhance survivability and lethality, and give soldiers and Marines the ability to select an appropriate level of force against threats. Lessons learned from recent combat operations identify scenarios where combatants and non-combatants frequently intermix. “Project Sheriff” is an initiative of the Pentagon's Office of Force Transformation. The House of Representatives included an additional $10 million for Project Sheriff in its DOD authorization bill. Without the Kerry amendment, the Senate legislation would not have funded this important program. “It is our responsibility to give our troops on the ground the very best technology, equipment and tools possible to keep them safe,” Kerry said. “Our forces must be prepared to fight in urban environments where our enemies can hide among building and civilians. Lethal attacks can come with no warning from an alley, a high rooftop, a darkened window or even a crowded street corner. New technology can help our troops protect themselves and civilians, and it is time we make this new technology a reality.” Kerry amendment protects housing benefits for military families after death of loved-one Doubles length of time families can stay in military housing Kerry’s amendment will allow surviving widows and children to reside in military housing -- either on base housing or with their housing allowance -- for a full year after death of loved one on active duty. This is a key component of Kerry's Military Family Bill of Rights. Until Kerry's efforts began to extend the time survivors can stay in military housing, families could only remain for six months after the loss of a service member -- often meaning children would start a school year in one state and finish it in another. The Senate passed a similar Kerry amendment earlier this spring, but that provision would have expired at the end of this year because it was attached to an emergency spending measure. Kerry’s effort this week will make permanent this one-year protection for military families permanent. The Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) and National Military Family Association (NMFA) have endorsed Kerry’s effort. To name a few. What have the repubs done but give tax breaks to the wealthy and resign from office for being corrupt?? When Bush does something right I will let you know! I would applaude him if he resigned! Look, it's pretty hard to say something nice about a man who started an illegal war, got 2,723 military killed and is now saying we went into Iraq and Afghanistan "TO GIVE THEM A CHANCE" at democracy" Well here comes the new spin. He thumbs his nose at the supreme court, leaks CIA Operatives names, sets up secret CIA torture camps in Poland and elsewhere breaking international law, breaks every treaty on the books including the Geneva conventions, violates the constitution, makes money off of the Savings and Loan Scandal, along with the rest of his family, which cost's taxpayers 2.1 TRILLION DOLLARS! Steals an election with the help of Florida's "irregular" voting practices which have yet to be fixed, with the help of his brother(who also pulled 4 Million from the S& L scandal) and a Supreme court who has 7 of 9 justices who are republican!. Gives the rich tax cuts and says "I represent the have and the have-mores"! No, I have a hard time having anything nice to say about him Oh the rebubs. They cut Veteran assistance, tried to take away combat pay, have cut every federal assistance program in existance, passing it along to the states to fund, run up $8,500,000,000,000.00 in debt, that we have to pay, gave 2 tax cuts to the wealthy and those earning less than 40,000 got enough to bring their family to McDonalds once every 2 weeks! Brought body bags home by the thousands, 58 were women! Want more? Aren't you the same guys who were slamming Clinton?

Do you agree with new Reid ad New Angle ad calls Reid illegal aliens "best friend"?

Sharron Angle has a new TV ad that calls U.S. Sen. Harry Reid illegal immigrants "best friend" and says his policies are putting American jobs and safety at risk. The hard-hitting ad from the Democratic incumbents GOP Senate challenger targets Nevada voters concerns that illegal workers are taking jobs away from U.S. Citizens at a time of record high unemployment in the state. "Illegals sneaking across our border, putting Americans safety and jobs at risk," the ad narrator says as images show people crossing the border. The ad then notes Nevada is struggling from "the nations highest unemployment rate," now at 14.3 percent. The ad says Reid opposes Arizonas tough new law that cracks down on illegal immigrants. It gives police the right to ask about someones legal status if stopped for another suspected offense, but its mostly on hold while the federal government sues to stop its enforcement. The ad also accuses Reid of voting for "special tax breaks" for illegal immigrants and to give them Social Security benefits "even for the time they were here illegally." A couple of the votes happened in 2006 as Nevadas GOP Sen. John Ensign introduced bill amendments to bar illegal immigrants who apply for legal status from collecting tax refunds or filing any claims for earned income tax credit or other tax benefits for years prior to 2006. The new 30-second ads comes as voter anxiety about illegal workers and the economy is on the rise. A recent poll for the Las Vegas Review-Journal shows that: --54 percent of Nevadans said they believe immigrants without legal status are taking jobs away from Nevada citizens, while 31 percent said such workers fill low-wage jobs most citizens wouldnt take. Fifteen percent were undecided. --46 percent of Nevadans said the states economy would be better if those who are not here legally were removed from the work force, while 31 percent said the economy would be about the same. Thirteen percent said the economy would be worse without undocumented workers and 10 percent werent sure. The poll of likely voters was taken Sept. 7-9 by Mason-Dixon. Nevada had an estimated 130,000 undocumented workers in 2009, the highest share of undocumented workers in the nation, at 9.4 percent, according to the Pew Hispanic Center. The Angle ad risks angering Hispanics who make up one-quarter of Nevadas population. But Reid already enjoys much stronger Latino support than Angle and the illegal immigration issue likely plays in her favor with non-partisan swing voters worried about jobs and the economy. The new ad comes a day after Reid said in Washington that he will try to pass at least one component of immigration reform this year. Reid said he plans a Senate vote on an amendment to an upcoming defense bill that would allow undocumented young people who were brought into the country by their parents to get on a path to citizenship if they pursue college or serve in the armed forces. Students have rallied Congress in favor of the Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act, or DREAM Act. It is directed to students who came to the United States as illegal immigrants before they were 16 and who have been in the country for at least five years. The bill would grant them temporary residency for six years. Within that time, the individuals would have the chance to earn permanent residency if they complete at least two years of college or serve at least two years in the armed forces with an honorable discharge. http://www.lvrj.com/blogs/politics/New_Angle_ad_calls_Reid_illegal_aliens_best_friend.html?ref=999
Answer: Not only Reid, but a majority of Liberals and Democrats, and unfortunately some Republicans seem to pander to the Illegal immigrant population. Democrats have always prayed on minorities, and new immigrants (legal and illegal) for their support base. Although I personally don't understand some of the pandering to illegals that we've seen over the past several years: A) Given that illegal immigrants should NOT have the right to vote in elections, why is it that many states, including my own home state, are giving them driver's licenses - the one legal document that every polling station asks to look at? B) Why is it that many states offer illegal immigrants In-State Tuition, without proof of residency in that state? I have a buddy who grew up in Oklahoma. He had moved away for school, and moved back to Oklahoma for grad school, and even after a year he still had to pay full non-resident tuition. While the same university gladly accepted illegals at in-state rates. C) The current fiasco between the Obama administration and the Justice Department against the new Arizona law. Obama and many of his staff, as well as congressmen and senators of his party have confessed to not even reading this law, but they were quick to condemn it. D) The SCHIP program which Bush vetoed. Bush was not completely against this bill - just the provisions to provide health care to illegal immigrants, and raising the age of eligibility up to 26. As soon as Obama got into office, his party pushed through this bill again, and it is now law. Those who are running for election, or are already elected officials need to realize you answer to US the AMERICAN CITIZENS. We or our forefathers followed the law to become citizens. Those who break our laws should be given a path to citizenship ONLY if they return home and try to come back LEGALLY!

House Judiciary Committee Holds Hearing on Costs of Illegal Immigration; Senate Votes to Fund Partial Border Fence House Judiciary Committee Hearing On August 2, 2006, the House Judiciary Committee held a hearing in San Diego, CA entitled, "How Does Illegal Immigration Impact American Taxpayers and Will the Reid-Kennedy Amnesty Worsen the Blow?" In his opening statement, Chairman James Sensenbrenner (R-WI) explained that this hearing was the first of several hearings the Judiciary Committee would be holding during the month of August to discuss the issue of illegal immigration. Todays hearing would focus on the fiscal impact of illegal immigration. He continued by saying, "Most economists agree that illegal immigrants impose a net fiscal cost on American government and American taxpayers. This is not because they are illegal immigrants per se, nor does it indicate that illegal immigrants contribute nothing to our economy. Rather, illegal immigrants represent a net loss to the U.S. economy because they generally consume more in government benefits than they pay in taxes." To read Chairman Sensenbrenners opening statement in its entirety, click here. Witnesses at the House Judiciary hearing included Michael Antonovich, L.A. County Supervisor; Kevin J. Burns, Chief Financial Officer, University Medical Center, Tucson; Robert Rector, The Heritage Foundation; Leroy Baca, Los Angeles County Sheriff; and Professor Wayne Cornelius, University of California, San Diego. Mr. Rector testified that the majority of illegal immigrants coming into the U.S. are low-skilled workers who take more from the economy than they contribute. Professor Cornelius countered, arguing that stricter border enforcement will not solve the illegal immigration problem in the U.S., because aliens will continue in their attempts to cross the border until they are successful. Thus, Professor Cornelius stated, legalization and guestworker programs are needed. To read the San Diego Union-Tribune article on yesterdays House Judiciary hearing, click here. To read the GOP Border Security Bulletins on yesterdays hearing, click here and here. Senate Votes to Fund Partial Border Fence During Senate debate on the FY07 Defense appropriations bill yesterday, two amendments were proposed relating to immigration and border security. Senator Sessions (R-AL) offered an amendment that would provide $1.8 billion to construct 370 miles of triple-layered fencing and 460 miles of vehicle barriers along the southern border. In support of his amendment, Senator Sessions argued that while the amount of money was not insignificant, Congress should follow through on commitments it has made—a reference to the adoption of his amendment to S.2611 to build approximately 370 miles of fencing along the border. The Senate approved Sessions amendment to fund the fence, 94-3. To read the Reuters article on the Sessions amendment, click here. In addition, Senators John Cornyn (R-TX) and Jon Kyl (R-AZ) proposed an amendment that would designate $4 billion in funding to pay for 500 additional Border Patrol agents and 800 new Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. The money would also go towards adding 1,300 detention beds, constructing physical barriers, purchasing Coast Guard equipment. Senator Cornyn argued that the adoption of this amendment would show that the federal government is serious about enforcement and would jump-start negotiations between the House and the Senate on an immigration bill. The Cornyn amendment remains pending on the floor
Answer: "This is not because they are illegal immigrants per se, nor does it indicate that illegal immigrants contribute nothing to our economy. Recent legislation citizenship in US?

There has been a recent proposal about three month ago to ease the process of getting a greencard for noncitizens if they had been getting educated here since age of 16 or gotten a college degree here. Who knows anything about it?
Answer: The Dream Act passed the House but failed in the Senate so it did have supporters although they added things to the bill called earmarks making the bill a dirty bill making it harder to support, even those senators that helped write it originally voted against it because of the earmarks and verbiage changes. They tried to pass it in the lame duck session and it did not go through. It is very likely that an immigration reform bill will pass the current House and Senate in the near future although it is most likely to focus more on more money for border agents, more budget and manpower for ICE offices to enforce our current laws and there is a chance that some provisions for the children that had no choice in the matter. Our Military has a great need at this time and offering something like this to these young people many of which no longer even speak the language of the country where they were born is a possibility because the reform bill will need to be reasonable and mass deportation is unlikely even with a Republican advantage. There have been several bills put forth and many of them had provisions for these children that had no choice in the matter since they are not guity of anything. Punishing a child for what a father has done is done in many countries although it does not make it just. There is a current push to have the 14th Amendment clarified so that children born to "undocumented" parents would not be US Citizens. Currently every state in the Union recognizes these children as US Citizens and the SSA issues social security numbers right after birth making these children part of the future tax base. We will need to watch the current bills closely to see what does pass and how it will affect the country.

Senate kills Cornyn border security amendment | The Daily Caller

The Senate rejected a border security amendment proposed by Texas Sen. John Cornyn, as Senators touted bipartisan agreement on a different border security package.

Do you agree with McCain on illegal immigration?

Supporting mass amnesty. The May 29, 2003, Tucson Citizen quoted Mr. McCain as stating that "Amnesty has to be an important part of" any immigration solution. He was part of the bipartisan coalition that tried to pass amnesty legislation in 2006 and 2007. In 2006 he voted in favor of S. 2611, legislation that would reward between 10 and 11 million illegals with amnesty if they apply for legal status and pay a $2,000 fine. Supporting in-state tuition for illegal aliens. Mr. McCain was a cosponsor of S. 774, the Dream Act, providing in-state tuition for illegal aliens. The legislation would have enabled illegal aliens who entered the United States before age 16 to obtain a green card and then use their newly acquired status to obtain green cards for the millions of parents who illegally brought their children with them into the United States. Mr. McCain missed a Senate vote on the issue in October. He said that he would have opposed it on the Senate floor had he been there to vote. Voted to kill border fence. In 2006, Mr. McCain voted for an amendment to S. 2611 offered by Sen. Arlen Specter to require consultation with the Mexican government concerning the construction of fencing along the U.S.-Mexican border. According to Numbers USA, an organization that lobbies against illegal immigration, this amendment would have effectively guaranteed that the border fence was never built. Voted against permanently barring gang members and terrorists from the United States. Last year, Mr. McCain voted against an amendment (Senate Amendment 1184) introduced by Sen. John Cornyn, Texas Republican, that would have permanently barred gang members, terrorists, sex offenders, alien absconders, aliens convicted of domestic violence and aliens convicted of at least three DUIs from the United States. The Cornyn Amendment was rejected on a 51-46 vote. Voted in favor of Social Security benefits to illegal aliens who commit identity fraud. In 2006. Mr. McCain joined with Mr. Kennedy in working to defeat an amendment by Sen. John Ensign, Nevada Republican, that would have barred Social Security credits for work being done prior to their receiving amnesty — in other words, while working under a false Social Security number. The Ensign Amendment, (Senate Amendment 3985) was defeated on a 50-49 vote. http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2008/jan/14/sen-mccain-and-illegal-immigration/

Do you support Rand Pauls amendment to the Immigration Bill....Trust but Verify?

Verify’ and Additional Amendments to Immigration Reform Bill Jun 5, 2013 Sen. Rand Paul yesterday announced one of his amendments that he intends on offering to the Gang of Eights Immigration Reform Bill. The Paul amendment makes immigration reform conditional on Congress voting on whether the border is secure, requiring completion of a border fence in five years and a protection against the federal government establishing a national identification card system for citizens. Sen. Pauls "Trust but Verify" amendment requires Congress to write and enforce a border security blueprint rather than relying on bureaucracies, such as the Department of Homeland Security, to come up with a plan. The amendment also would provide new national security safeguards to track the holders of student visas and those provided asylum and refugee status. The Paul amendment would put pressure on the Department of Homeland Security to finally follow through on the broken promise of a secure border and an effective visa tracking system. http://www.paul.senate.gov/?p=press_release&id=836 Eugene...........in what country do you live? The ones required to carry papers are the ones not yet citizens and the fence is to keep out invaders aka illegals.
Answer: I've heard Rand Paul speak many times... I would never say this of other politicians ( not even his father ) but, I can safely say I'd go along with anything Dr. Paul puts forward.
