Bfs plane is grounded in houston for "mechanical problems" along with like 10 others. Its southwest so Im sure it has to do with their recent fcc violation troubles. They MIGHT be able to get him on the next flight in 2 hours...any comps for this? What if it takes even longer?
Answer: depends on what the airlines policy is for compensation. for most airlines, if the delay is for more then 2 hours due to mechanical, then they will compensate all passengers accordingly. if it has anything to do with weather or anything they cant control such as FAA/dot grounding them, then they cant compensate.

Answer: Strengths: Low expenses; aggressively hedge fuel costs; largest and most well-known discount airline; low complaint rate from passengers; operate 1 type of aircraft (Boeing 737) so maintenance costs are lower Weaknesses: Airline tries to avoid the busy, congested airports so they do not fly into major airports such as JFK, Chicago O'Hare, Dallas Fort-Worth. Basically the airline does not fly everywhere. Also the airline is not in an alliance with other airlines except WestJet. Most other airlines have some sort of partnership where you can earn and redeem miles or code-share. Opportunities: Just as the previous person mentioned, fly internationally. They can try to form new alliances with other airlines such as Ryanair in Europe or Air Asia in Asia so that those who fly any of those airlines can earn RapidRewards. Threats: Price of oil can go up anytime; If there is ever an issue with the Boeing 737 and the government orders all 737s to be grounded, Southwest will be in trouble. (Airlines were ordered one time to inspect all MD-80 aircraft due to wiring/electrical problem. American Airlines grounded a lot of their planes and canceled numerous flights until inspections were complete.)

Whats going on at the PDX Airport?

My flight was cancelled today from Boise to Portland so I booked another for Thursday. I think the weather will be better, or at least I hope it will. This has been going on for days now though. Practically all the flights into Portland are being cancelled. Why cant they get some snow plows, deicer or sand over there?
Answer: I live in Boise and was supposed to fly to Portland on Monday For the whole day, only one plane got out of Boise and to Portland, and the passengers sat on the plane for 5 hours before it took off The weather is insane in Portland, they got 11 inches of snow and an inch of ice on top of that, it is illegal to be driving any vehicle in Portland Metro area without chains, and they are actually taking people to jail There are so many planes grounded at PDX, that there really is no room to land the other planes, and in order to fly planes out of PDX, the freezing rain and snow has to stop, and they have to de-ice the planes. Portland NEVER ever gets snow, so they aren't prepared for this, they don't have enough snow plows and de-icing machines. Even though the weather has improved a little bit, there is so many back-ups and confusion, that it is impossible for them to re-organize right now I was supposed to go with my best friend, last night at 11 she finally found a ticket to Portland, the last one on SouthWest, and her plane took off out of BOI to PDX less than 20 minutes ago, we couldn't find another ticket for me, and chances are, there won't be any flights Wednesday due to the weather. But really, the plows and de-icers really aren't the biggest problem, it's the non-stop weather, and the amount of people, confusion, and grounded airplanes Good luck!

Cochran was born July 6, 1954, on a farm near Pelham Georgia, into a family consisting of his mother and father and 11 brothers and sisters. His inspiration for flying was sparked by occasional glimpses of Navy jet fighters on various aerobatics maneuvers. Pelham Georgia is located in southwest Georgia which is located at the intersection of highways 65, 93 and 262 about 100 miles south of Albany Georgia. This writer is unsure of the base station of these Navy jets, but they were probably out of the Naval Air Station of Pensacola Florida. Cochran earned a Civil Engineering degree on a Naval ROTC scholarship at Savannah State college in 1976 . He earned his Navy wings in 1978 after completing basic and advanced Jet training. In aviation language "earning your wings" actually means that an individual has completed flight school and is now recognized as a pilot (that is, what is frequently termed a Naval aviator) capable of flying various types of aircraft (Airplanes). In 1986, Lieutenant Commander Cochran had flown more than 2,000 hours in jet fighters and completed 469 carrier landings. Cochran answered the call of duty two times as a member of the Blue Angels precision flying team, both times following unfortunate incidents involving other aviators. On July 13, 1985, during an air show at Niagara Falls International Airport, two A-4 Sky Hawk jet aircraft collided. One pilot was killed, Navy Lieutenant Commander Mike Gershon, of Pensacola Florida and the other, Lieutenant Andy Caputi, 30, ejected from his plane and landed safely on the grounds of the Niagara Falls air Force Base. Lieutenant Commander Cochran, along with two other pilots, were selected to replace these two members of the Blue Angels precision flying team. In this capacity, on October 4, 1985, three months following the fatal crash at Niagara Falls New York, Cochran became the first African American to become a member of the Blue Angels precision flying team in the history of its 40 year existence. He was 31 years old. Cochran's formula for Success consisted of four parts; Self confidence Education and preparation Persistence Performance On July 4, 1986 ,Cochran , along with other members of the Blue Angels, that is the Navy's elite aerobatics precision flight team, flew an A-4 Sky Hawk in a ceremonial celebration saluting the restoration of the Statue of Liberty. Cochran was quoted as saying "What I am doing is not just a job, it's an opportunity. I would like to show young people the roads that are open to them in America. Nobody said, here, Donnie, apply for the team, and they will give it to you. You have to earn it". Following two years of flying with the Blue Angels Cochran was stationed at the Naval air Station at Miramar (see Tom Cruises movie "Top Gun" that was a featured attraction in 1989). Next Cochran joined the "Bounty Hunters" of fighter squadron 2 (VF-2) while the squadron was deployed aboard the carrier USS Ranger (CV-61). After this tour, he was selected to attend the Air War College in Montgomery Alabama and during this time earned a masters degree in Human Resource Management from Troy State University. Following this Cochran reported to Fighter Squadron 1 (VF-1) in March 1992 as executive officer and took command in July 1993 until the squadron was disestablished in September 1993, then moving on to become commander of the "Sun Downers" of fighter squadron 111 (VF-111). Cochran's second call to duty as Member of the "Blue Angels" was in the capacity of "Boss" which is somewhat of a nickname for the Leader or Commander of the flying team; This time, Cochran, was called to replace Commander Robert E. Stumpf who had been grounded (placed in a no flying status) as a result of a scandal (which the news media termed the Tailhook Scandal) relating to a party held by some Naval aviators in Las Vegas Nevada. Cochran was 41 years old and leading the Navys six plane precision flight demonstration team. The year was 1994. "I look at it (being the first African American to become leader of the Blue Angels) as an opportunity to be the boss; not black and white, but an opportunity to command a very special organization" .Cochran went on to say that " I am perfectly aware that I am an African American". In June 1996 Cochran decided to leave the Blue angels after two assignments with the team. During his first tour he successfully made the transition from flying the A-4 Sky Hawk to the F/A-18 hornet. Prior to Cochran's becoming a member of the Blue angels, the team; death had claimed the lives of 22 pilots while in training and or during shows over it's 40 year history of existence. At age 42, Cochran considered himself to be an older fighter pilot than those flying with the precision flying team. Cochran said that "I can hold my head high. I have not crashed any airplanes, none of my pilots have crashed an airplane, none of my pilots have been hurt." And that is true; he can hold his head very high. From a family of 11 brothers and sisters, born, July 6 , 1954 on a farm in Pelham Georgia to become leader and Commander of the Navy's elite precision acrobatics demonstration team. In 1995, Cochran had accumulated more than 4,350 total flight hours in seven (7) different types of naval aircraft and completed 570 carrier landings. Today Captain Cochran is a highly decorated officer, having being awarded the Meritorious service Medal, the air Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal and numerous other personal and unit awards. Cochran said that his career objective is to "continue my Naval career as long as the challenges and opportunities are available and reflect my own desires." Their spokeperson Mr. Mcchris said that they grounded 200 planes and c/out WAC(walk around check) for cracks. WAC is a GVI(general visual inspection) c/out from the ground to check for obvious damage. What is required is NDT ie. x-ray, ultrasonic inspection and DVI(detailed visual inspection). Is Southwest taking a shorcut again?
Answer: No, they are not... if there was enough evidence to ground the fleet the NTSB and the FAA would mandate the steps. Southwest is taking the iniative by completing visual inspections while the feds and Boeing decide if this occurrence was isolated or an indication of future failures in the fleet. Doing xrays and dvi would require extended grounding of many airplanes cancelling hundreths of flights and losing millions of dollars during an economic downturn... every airline plays a risk-assesment game, not just SWA The 737 fared extremely well and the failure is in my opinon is not life-threatening. I'm more worried about the recent failure's with the Airbus fleet crashes but I may be bias since I flew old Boeings.

Answer: They're as reliable as GE, Snecma, and P&W. Anybody can have an uncontained failure at any time. It was a GE CF-6 that lost the fan in the #2 engine on the UAL flight at Sioux City. American had a P&W JT8 fall off a B727 over the desert Southwest, Piedmont had a P&W JT8 fall off a B737 at ORD, USAir had P&W JT8 fall off a B737 at PHL. The Rolls RB211 is prone to engine annulus fillers (fan blade spacer) leaving the hub (contained failures). USAirways had an uncontained turbine failure of a GE CF6 at PHL during a maintenance run. AA had an uncontained turbine failure of a GE CF6 at LAX. The list goes on ad nauseum. Any engine can fail at any time. A lot of the reliability is dependant upon the care the engine receives while in service, in addition to the manufacturing process and the overhaul processes. I personally, am comfortable with anything P&W, GE, Snecma, or Rolls powered. We need to give the investigation a chance to see what caused the uncontained failure in the A380 and not jump to premature conclusions. It could be due to a one time event, or it may be the harbinger of a trend that is just manifesting itself. I'm sure due investigative diligence will occur and the culprit will be identified. I thought Qantas took exceptional steps when they grounded the fleet due to the unknowns to this point, and definitely have passenger safety in mind.
