How democratic is the US considering the amount of money spent on elections?
Firstly the costs of elections is incredible. Where is this money spent? A lot of it goes on advertising. I thought this was supposed to be democracy and no just who is the best advertiser. Democracy has been replaced by a McDonalds and Coca-Cola type institution that merely gets people to buy the product, not because it is the best, the tastiest, the nicest, but because it is the most well known.
Then the money comes from somewhere and those who pay this money expect to receive something back. Is that democracy?

So the US doesnt choose many ambassadors based on their ability to do the job, but the money they put in.
The US in Iraq used Halliburton a lot more, and the Republicans got a lot more money out of Halliburton as a result.

In 2004 Halliburton spent three times more on lobbying that in the previous year, and the year before that, and the year before that. They spent nearly double what they had spent in the previous presidential election year. Seems when your friends make you rich, you pay them back.

We can see that Obama gained 47% of his money from individuals. Some of these individuals might be working on behalf of other companies who want to get more money to a politician, some are clearly just individuals who support a person or party. But 53% of all money the President relies on comes from companies who expect something in return.
Romney has a figure of only 9% from individuals. This might rise if he gains the nomination, but the reality is his campaign is being paid for by companies who want something in return.
Ron Paul on the other hand raised 52% of his money from the people, but is ignored by the press (too old? Not handsome enough? The press doesnt like his policies?) and as such doesnt do as well.
But Ron Paul got $15 million from individuals, Romney gets $5 million from individuals. Gingrich gets $6 million from individuals. And yet who is leading this campaign? The person with individual support or the person with the money from companies who can afford to blaze away?
Romney has more than double the money of Ron Paul, and 4 times the money of Gingrich, who is obviously doing alright considering the money he has raised compared to Romney, who is also probably using his own money on top of what he has raised.
So isnt it time for Americans to make the US democratic again?
Answer: Since the Supreme Court demolished any prior reforms toward limiting funding by PACS and billionaires, NO, we are no longer a Democracy. And it isn't going to get any better. Union busting,
still trying to deprive a woman's right to take care of herself, going back to pre-civil rights days and depriving Minorities and the Poor the right to vote. And on and on. I fought for keeping us a Democracy all my life. Now it's up to the next generation (actually the next 2) to keep up the fight, or wimp out and give in to the Robber Barons.
