Conceding Errors and Disarray, Paterson Vows to Regain Trust
Not long after David A. Paterson became governor, he gathered his senior staff at a mountainside estate 30 miles from the capital to shape an agenda for his fledgling administration. A former executive from the Dale Carnegie Institute was brought in, and gave the bewildered senior advisers promotional T-shirts and copies of his book, which featured - New York Gov David Paterson is under increasing scrutiny and even many in his own party are questioning whether he has capacity to provide necessary leadership; some describe him as unprepared or adrift; his poll numbers are sharply down, emboldening Republicans who are eager to win back governors office in 2010; his move to reinstate his aide Charles J OByrne, who resigned amid tax scandal, is potentially risky, but observers say it could help with disarray that has plagued his inner circle; Paterson acknowledges complaints about lack of clarity coming from his administration and concedes that his first year did not fulfill expectations; while he has said he will run for re-election in 2010, close observers are persuaded that he will not; photo (M) - By DANNY HAKIM and NICHOLAS CONFESSORE

Press TV has conducted an interview with Ralph Schoenman, author of Hidden History of Zionism, to further discuss the issue.
The following is a transcript of the interview.
Press TV: What do you think these Republican candidates are after by expressing such opinions about terrorism in Iran?
Schoenman: Well, you have to understand that this is part of the political climate in the United States, and its not merely the Republicans.
The call for regime change in Iran was the headlines on November 24th when Newt Gingrich who is now the leading so-called supportive candidate amongst Republicans who were polled - its a tiny fraction of the population altogether.
But none-the-less, the former speaker and leader imposed “taking a tougher stance than his rivals towards Tehran.”
And he called for replacing the leadership of Iran in a more aggressive posture. But this language is opaque. And as youd indicated, its his embracing overt military action which is not a new phenomenon.
I want to emphasize that in 2004 when Barack Obama was giving a keynote speech at the Democratic Convention, long before he was a national figure, he was advocating what was called a preemptive strike on Tehran.
And then the Guardian, to come up to date in London today, the headline was “War in Iran has already begun - active force threatens all of us. Escalation of a covert US-Israeli campaign against Tehran risks a global storm.” And this is, as I say, in todays Guardian.
And I should emphasize as well that in the New York Times today the headline is “Drone crash in Iran reveals secret US surveillance effort.” And it is a very frank and open discussion of the Brookings Institutions disclosures of the constant military operations in Iran of which the drone crash is only a most recent expression.
The centerpiece of what the article states, “the centerpiece of what has long been a covert program” - and that covert program entails such things as the explosion that occurred at the military site in Iran which affected missile defense capacity in the part of Iran that includes, as well, assassination operations in Iran.
I think its also important to emphasize that when you see what appear to be intermeshing attacks such as the slaughter of Shia in Afghanistan which is linked to Sunni al-Qaeda and other activists, look for the hand of the Mossad and the CIA in such operations.
Press TV: Sticking with the next presidential elections in the US, what chance does Obama have taken into account the Republican aisle?
Schoenman: I dont know. I would point out to you that Obama has vanishing little support given the nature of the economic crisis, the banking crisis, the huge pauperization of the population with 100 million people living at or near the poverty line as the New York Times disclosed in a front page story.
Its a Hobsons choice because when you speak of Obama as opposed to the Republicans, these are politicians who are paid for by the same people, and who are subordinate to the same military and intelligence apparatus.
The Central Intelligence [Agency] and the Pentagon will maintain their politics, their policies and their imperial reach regardless of what politician holds nominal office without power in the United States.
Answer: You're quoting the Official Press Agency of the Islamic Republic of Iran as a source?
Good luck with that.

For Gay Democrats, a Primary Where Rights Are Not an Issue, This Time
The impromptu debate, over light beers and dirty martinis, was at once mundane and remarkable. Provoked by a reporter, four middle-aged men at a Greenwich Village gay bar made fiery pitches for the Democratic presidential front-runners. Two backed Senator Barack Obama, one argued for Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, and the fourth made an emotional - Leading Democratic presidential hopefuls have staked out similar positions that resonate with gay men and lesbians, giving these voters opportunity to move on to other issues in evaluating field; lesbians and gay men make up between 5 and 13 percent of Democratic vote in New York and with about one week left before primary, gay vote appears to be mirroring state-wide electorate, leaning toward Sen Hillary Clinton; photos (M) - By ANDREW JACOBS

POLITICAL MEMO; Storm Politics Present Risks And Rewards
On the day Hurricane Katrina made landfall three years ago, President Bush helped Senator John McCain celebrate his birthday with a cake that melted on a blazing hot airport tarmac, just as the presidents approval ratings would in the weeks to come. This time around, the partys off. Or at least it is for Mr. Bush and Mr. McCain, who on Sunday - Republican presumptive presidential nominee Sen John McCain seeks to focus attention on efforts to prepare for Hurricane Gustav at expense of carefully laid plans for Republican National Convention; McCain is seen as gambling he can turn to his advantage situation that otherwise threatens opportunity to introduce himself and running mate Gov Sarah Palin at convention; McCains decision to get out front and center allows him to reinforce message that he is not typical partisan and draws sharp contrast with Bush administrations uneven response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005; photos (M) - By PETER BAKER; David Carr contributed reporting from Minneapolis.
