Is it still true, "As Ohio goes, so goes the nation"?

Posted by admin on Jul 27, 2012 in Polls
We wrap up the first round in our Big 10 series with Ohio–perhaps the quintessential and, arguably, most important swing state. The closeness of recent presidential elections certainly makes the Buckeye State a battleground, and with good reason. With a single exception (1960) Ohio has gone with the presidential winner every election since 1944.
So, as in our other polls in this series, we asked each participant: “If the election for president were held today, for whom would you vote?” We’ve included Libertarian Gary Johnson to test the impact of a third-party candidate on what may be a very tight race. Here are our results:
Poll type:: Automated Date: July 24, 2012 - Participants: 1,115 Likely Voters - Margin of Error: ± 3%
Barack Obama Mitt Romney Gary Johnson Undecided
All voters (weighted) 47.84% 40.20% 2.04% 9.93%
Democrats 83% 10% 1% 6%
Republicans 19% 71% 2% 8%
Independents 38% 41% 3% 18%
What pops out immediately is the high percentage of self-described Republicans who say they will vote for Barack Obama over Mitt Romney. An outlier? Perhaps. But we went back into the field last night to test it again. The results: almost identical. Hmmm. We going to keep an eye on that.
Since Independents are leaning toward Romney, if the “wayward” GOP electorate come back home to roost, this will tighten up considerably and quickly. And a rumored choice of Ohio Senator Rob Portman as Romney’s VP running mate could reverse what we’re seeing today.
Then again, maybe those GOP voters leaning toward Obama are the result of the President working Ohio like Rocky Balboa on a side of beef…breaking a few political ribs while he’s at it.
And those take a long time to heal.
Answer: You have a very good point, I am also looking at the high number of undecided, especially high in the independent category. I too feel that some of the primary wounds are fresh, as November nears that swelling will go down. So that 19% republican turning should turn back a bit.
It's going to be close, anyone believing a cakewalk on either side is incorrect, barring a bombshell.

What do you think about Obamas winning in the polls in 3 battleground states?
President Barack Obama holds an edge over Mitt Romney in Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania, a new Quinnipiac University/New York Times/CBS News poll out Wednesday shows.
When likely voters in the three battleground states were asked whom they would vote for if the election were held today, heres the way it broke down:
Florida: Obama, 51 percent; Romney, 45 percent.
Ohio: Obama, 50 percent; Romney 44 percent
Pennsylvania: Obama, 53 percent; Romney 42 percent
No one has won the White House since 1960 without winning at least two of the states. Obama won all three in 2008.
Support for Obamas proposal to increase taxes on households making more than $250,000 per year is 58 to 37 percent in Florida, 60 to 37 percent in Ohio and 62 to 34 percent in Pennsylvania, the survey finds.
Obama is expected to focus on his tax proposal Wednesday during campaign stops in Ohio.
"If today were Nov. 6, President Barack Obama would sweep the key swing states of Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania and — if history is any guide — into a second term in the Oval Office," said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "The president is running better in the key swing states than he is nationally. Part of the reason may be that the unemployment rate in Ohio is well below the national average. In Florida it has been dropping over the past year, while nationally that has not been the case."
The polls were conducted by telephone from July 24-July 30 among 1,177 likely voters in Florida, 1,193 likely voters in Ohio and 1,168 likely voters in Pennsylvania. The margin of error was plus or minus 2.9 percentage points in Florida and Pennsylvania and 2.8 percentage points in Ohio.
