The Christian idea of "waiting for God"?

Am curious about this idea in Christianity, that Ive heard quite a few people talk about. They, as Christians, believe that delays in life are sometimes part of Gods plan, and after praying about it, they wait for God to act on their behalf. They also say that if they try to manipulate circumstances, or give up waiting and look for something else, then they run the risk of leaving Gods perfect will for their lives. Something akin to the ideas found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvM60VxfrJk So in theory, Christians shouldnt help themselves because delays and circumstances are part of Gods plan? What if a Christian is unemployed? If he tries to get a job by various means, then isnt it meddling with circumstances, and wont he risk dropping out of Gods perfect will?
Answer: The times in the bible where people didn't wait for God and things got a bit messed up were times when God had promised something but took His time in bringing about the thing so the people took things into their own hands to bring about the promise themselves, usually going against God's ways. Eg Abraham was promised a son, but took His time in causing Abraham's wife to conceive so Abraham slept with his wife's servant and had Ishmael, who later caused trouble with God's promised son from Abraham's wife, Isaac. So if God has promised something personally to us, we should wait, not take things into our own hands. Eg, if God tells someone that Jim will be fired next month and they will get Jim's job, that person shouldn't start telling the employer all the bad things Jim is doing etc to try to cause God's promise to come to pass. But that doesn't mean they shouldn't apply for the job. If you know what I mean. Unemployed Christians can certainly try to get a job, and trust God to guide them while they do it, that's not meddling with circumstances.

Why cant I fall for anyone?

Okay, this might end up a little long-winded, but please bear with me. Ive previously had a bout of depression, which Im 5 months into curing with prescribed pills, but the one thing still bugging me that wont budge is that I cannot develop feelings for anyone around me. Im much happier, smiling more often, and more open with others, but Ive never, and still havent, experienced anything close to fancying someone. Ill be honest, its driving me mad. I wont let it get me down, as I refuse to drop back into the pattern of spiraling self pity I revolved in before, but itd be a lie to say I dont consider myself to be less human because of it. Trouble is, I might have had these feelings before, but whenever I see a girl I believe to be pretty, I become conflicted as to whether Im just thinking that because I genuinely do feel that way, or am deluding myself into thinking that I do because I want it so badly. Answer: First off you need to stop thinking and over thinking. You need to start feeling with your heart. As for not falling for a girl don't worry your heart will let you know when you're "crushing" on someone.. As long as you keep your brain out of the mix. Should I get prescription reading glasses?

I really dont know what to do. Since I was 11 (14 years ago as I am now 25) or maybe younger I have been wearing glasses. The problem, if indeed it is one, is that during that entire period I have been wearing my distance glasses for absolutely everything including extremely close work and reading music. Thus, I believe that both sides of my vision are bad. Reading street signs even with my distance glasses is tough, and yet if I take them off I cant read this computer screen. If I get reading glasses, will it take some of the strain off of my eyes? (I am referring to the notion that reading with reading glasses would be better than reading with distance glasses.) What I dont get is that, when I tell an optician (optometrist? whoever does the eye exam at the eyeglasses store...) that they are for distance, they dont pick up that since I walked in wearing them that I am wearing them for absolutely everything and that that might be a bad thing. I asked her about reading glasses and she said "oh youre still young and you should let your eyes focus naturally while reading" but I forgot to tell her that they are already crap since I have been wearing my distance glasses for everything, and so you should give me reading glasses because thats what I came here for. But instead I just sheepishly took her comment and ended up leaving with, well, not what I wanted or what I thought I needed. So basically should I get prescription reading glasses and would it help me? (The ones at the checkout counter at the drug store dont work for me, probably because I also have a stigmatism.) And no, for the time being I am opposed to surgery unless they can knock me out at the door and have me wake up without remembering it. But supposedly they cant know you out because your eyes move uncontrollably. I have seen videos of the surgery where they are holding your eyes open with clamps, and I think it is also necessary to do so for laser surgery. Im not letting anything like that near my eyes if Im aware of it. And if they have to tie you down to the bed to keep you from batting the doctors hands away, then thats akin to torture. (And even if they tell you that you wont be able to see it, thats not true either. A friend of my moms had cataract surgery and he could see the curved needle coming down to sew up his eye even though he couldnt feel it.) But supposedly they have to keep you aware because, if they out you to sleep, your eyes move all around and they cant do the surgery. Well, sorry if this turned into a flaming rant but I will leave it this way to show how concerned and/or scared.

Take the copy of the prescription and post in the usenet group sci.med.vision (which can be gotten to through google groups) and pay attention to anything Mike Tyner, Dr. Judy or Robert Martellaro tell you. Ignore the resident loon, Otis. It's a pretty common progression for nearsighted people to become more nearsighted in early adulthood. With astigmatism, you're probably going to want glasses full time. If they are very strong glasses (like -5 or more), you're going to need to be more picky with how the glasses sit on your face. I'm guessing that what you really need is a good refraction ("eye test") from someone who is really a skilled refractionist, not any random doc at the optical shop, and glasses that are carefully made so they really help your astigmatism. Or you may do better with contact lenses -- many people do. Towards the end of her life, my mom was having terrible trouble seeing, and I finally persuaded her to try the practice that I'd found that specialized in people with "low vision". They spent nearly an hour on the refraction part of the exam, and we spent almost an hour while the optician they'd referred us to very, very carefully measured her for frames and lenses. Then another hour of fitting and adjustment when the lenses were made. Suddenly, she could see well again for the first time in about 10 years, and spent the next 6 years happily reading, watching tv, and doing all sorts of things she thought she'd no longer be able to do with her eyesight. A good exam and fitting can make that much difference. PS: If you really think readers would help, you can try on some over your current glasses. What reading glasses do in this test, when someone is nearsighted is "subtract strength" from your current glasses. Yeah, you'll look silly, but if they do help, you can have bifocals or progressive lenses made.

Well I know "rational" people say that people who kill themselves are depressed and or in need of attention, but what if they KNOW they want to do it. What is causing this & what can eat so I wont have the following problems:?

I usually drink an Akins protein drink in the morning & some bottled water but I havent been able to get the store & I was fine. Lunch time I had some Tomato soup & I have been drinking water from my faucett. I was fine. I also feel like I cant focus now & I was really focused this morning. My husband & I both have trouble with our memories & focusing. Then I ate a granola bar & noticed I went from happy to depressed, anxious & now not feeling like I want to get up & do anything. My eyes are black underneath. I have had problems for years but the contrast really showed me something was wrong. Last week I had an apple that smelled like paint but I ate it with peanut butter & had a similar reaction but had to go to sleep I was so sick. I hope that doesnt happen but my breathing is shallow & I just noticed I am really not breathing as I should be. Do I have allergies, Food intolerances, could this be from diabetes or another dis-ease? Are the foods bought from the grocery story being posined? I know my last comment seems insane. The drug companies made billions last year. What would keep them from paying companies to put something in their products that would cause people to run to the doctors for medication for depression, diabetes, anti-anxiety drugs. I watched my neighbor become brainwashed watching Fox news & listening to Rush Limbaugh. He killed himself last week by taking his meds knowing it would give him a heart attack. I want to live to be 100 & I have a great spiritual, mental, emotional life. Not perfect but working on things & think with the right physical care life can be even better. What do people eat if they want to avoid toxins? How do they maintain a well balanced diet? I dont think I could go on a microbiotic diet. I live in a state that has 2 months of summer & no farmers selling there stuff around here.
Answer: From your symptoms, I'm wondering if they are caused by something other than food, such as carbon dioxide leaking from a stove or heater, or lead poisoning from paint. My suggestion would be to contact your doctor. It appears you came in contact with something of a toxic nature, so please get that either confirmed or denied. If all that comes out clear, then possibly the apple you ate that smelled like paint might be the culprit. And yes, it could come from an allergic reaction or a food intolerance. But the only way to know for certain is to get tested by a qualified health professional. Most of the foods sold in stores are reasonably safe, but you can't always rule out a contamination source. So the sooner you get some help, the better off you'll be. Good luck, and I hope you get to the bottom of this.

Theists, explain to me how determinism and omnibenevolence work together.?

Now, I was raised to believe God knew everything. I was also raised to believe that God was all-loving, and would forgive us all our sins. But a few problems pop up with that for me. First of all, if he was all-forgiving, why would he want us to ask him for forgiveness? Would it not be granted anyway? If it would, then whats the point in making us ask? Sending us to hell for not acknowledging his existence, and grovelling in repentance, does not seem at all like the act of a benevolent being, to me. Secondly, determinism and omniscience work against free will. No, they do. I mean, if he knows what were going to do, then what choice do we have? Especially for those things that arent our choice. Like, ya know, being homosexual and that. I cant think of a single person (except for attention-seeking college sl*ts, who would choose to even pretend to be gay or bi. Furthermore, after knowing what were going to do and how were going to be, how can he punish us? Surely, a benevolent God would either forgive those sins which we cannot change (and I dont care what you say, de-gayification centres [a la Saved!], dont work), or have zapped them before they appeared. I may well punish you all for breathing, because it is against my moral doctrine, and la la la I dont care that it isnt really a choice for you. Lastly, why would an omnibenevolent, omniscient, omnipotent etc God demand unwavering allegiance here on Earth, and threaten us with eternal damnation? Surely, no truly altruistic God would feel the need to strong-hand us like that. And since hes pansophical, he knows a great many of us arent going to believe in him anyway. So how can he punish us, knowing what we were going to do, having the power to change it (or at least give us atheists compelling evidence), and doing nothing anyway? Is the Internet the single most powerful surveillance tool ever conceived ?

I am sure a lot of people have considered the same thing, and have often wondered who and where retrieves their personal information which they enter into online forms. Almost everything on the internet is geared towards unearthing more and more information about you. Think about it. I dont want to get ahead of myself and bring up the word conspiracy thats too strong a term and perhaps not applicable to this, but ive often wondered how much they find out about us, and especialy how much they monitor trends in our behaviour such as opinions on global affairs , views on social matters , holiday plans , online purchasing tastes etc. data mining is perhaps one thing which is related to all of this, but on a higher level. Yahoo! lets you use internet chatrooms, a powerful means by which 3rd party entities could profile you for months and even years. Akin to perhaps monitoring/tapping into telephone lines, but only via monitoring you online through your audio/text and video conferencing habits. Call it paranoia but unless youre smart enough to be a ghost on the internet, there is no way given the infrastructure of computer networks that one could elude any authority who wishes to find out more about you. I wont go into it more, apart from give it a little think through. So. Is the Internet the single most powerful (clever) surveillance tool ever conceived ? I read a lot of crime/military/underworld mob fiction books, written by only the best authors...and there are specialists out there who can be hired to find you , and one of the first things theyll use is the internet to dig up the basic nitty gritty information about you. If one looks hard enough, they can find out anything about anyone and THATS what im trying to hit at. Also, some countries government agencies contain databases which are outdated and/or poorly secured and have vulnerabilities which a networking guru turned hacker could exploit, and these days the right $$$ is enough to ensure these type of ppls services. The only way you can maybe beat all this is to live a double life, or simply fake your death and start up a new identity heh ^^ pfo says " How much real and useful information exists for surveillance purposes, and what % of internet traffic does it comprise? Id imagine very, very little, well less than 0.001%. " so wheres your source ? 0.001% ? where did you find those figures lol ?
Answer: It was created for the military, so who knows? haha But no, the internet is so massive, there is no possible way anyone could monitor everything at once. People still download music and get away with it, and I know many had their credit card numbers stolen by countries in the former Soviet Union over the internet. Edit: It would take hundreds, if not thousands of hours to trace someone's inquiries on the internet. Proxies change IP addresses too often so the same computer won't be identifed using the same address. Only the service providers would be able to provide any help, and they don't give out or sell their information to just anyone. They need to be government operated. I don't mean to be a buzz kill to your book. It could be feasible one day. I certainly hope not though.

I think Im dating someone out of my league?

Ive recently started seeing someone, and I think Im in over my head with him. First of all, hes 24, and extremely successful in his field for someone his age. Quite literally, hes quickly worked his way up the political ranks and will be running for preselection for the 2015 NSW state election, and there is no chance he will fail. He is going to be a politician by the time he is 27. For me, being a graduate of political science and a current Masters student in Government and Commercial Law, this is possibly the holy grail of all people to be seeing. Much and all as I dont see myself as being unattractive (well, really, I dont have too many prominent issues with my appearance), and I am possibly better educated than he, I cant help but think I am punching above my weight. This isnt an issue of me comparing myself to his previous girlfriends, or an issue I have with my body, or any of the usual insecurities girls have with their current partners, this is purely a "hes extremely successful and I dont know if I feel I can give him everything he needs" kind of thing. It also doesnt help that I see elected officials as akin to celebrities. I just feel as though I wont be able to live up to everything he can be, if that makes sense. Any advice to keep my head above the water?

Video game club at high school?

I plan on making a video game club at my high school. And want a few pointers. First, if anyone could list some other high schools that have something akin, that would be great. Also commonly known colleges that have game design courses would be greatly appreciated. Secondly I plan on having M games there, but I know some parents wont agree. Should I give up on M games? Should I have a waiver that cuts off students that couldnt get it signed? Any tips will be greatly appreciated thank you. P.S There are several teachers in our school that would support us in a heartbeat, the only question is trying to persuade the principal/ school board. Thank you!
Answer: I'm vice president and fellow founder of the Spokane Falls Community Gamers Club at SF Community College, and I think that its awesome you're starting this club for your high school :) My advice is to create a questionnaire that would be handed out at the FIRST meeting of your club. It should contain an ARRAY of video games from -every- genre, all grouped together too (since if you put them in obvious categories, it might help sway a person's interest *away* from that game!) If you do this, read member's opinions about games, and tally up which ones are more of an interest to the club, then that will help keep people from getting bored and leaving! It will keep things organized, and encourage steady agendas for following meeting. Also, make sure you have the equipment, and people you can trust. Doing events and gaming tournaments will be the highlight of a gaming club, therefore if you plan on making the XBOX 360 the topic of choice for your club, it would be a good idea to host a mini event or club get together with one or severals 360s, but you have to make sure you can trust everyone. If you can't trust everyone, hire a close friend or another club officer to keep special watch on the games and systems. Giving out prizes is a good idea also, and there may be a chance that a video game company would sponsor this, ESPECIALLY if you had a gaming even that the whole school had easy access too ^.^ Hope I helped!!! Mormons: is it one god per solar system, one per galaxy, or one per universe?

Something akin to this was asked previously. However, no mormon technically "answered" the question. Having been offered a further clue to mormon-like insight, the question had to be broadened in all fairness to mormons. Like I gently requested of mormons, please, clue us in. Would you please be so kind as to give references to your determination with official mormon doctrine on the subject? This may help focus your responses, instead of answering with everything but. Indeed, I realize its a lot of slogging through realms unknown, but I have faith your churchs endless racks of apologists are up to the task. God alone knows they wont answer such a technical question from me, but merely respond the same as yall do. (Therein lies my identity for those whos overweening curiosity remains unquenched.) Never did get to the bottom of what the church position was on the most critical belief of mormon thought. God? vs. gods. They were too full of.... something else entirely. What I did eventually learn is, the One Almighty God I now rely on does not base Himself on our knowledge base. Whether multiple universes or one, there is only one God. Because HE says so, too plainly for you to comprehend. But then, you go right on believing you have the "freedom to believe".... whatever you want. Your leaders prefer you do.

Who wrote a novel about architecture in New York where the building is possessed and drives tenants insane?

This is a novel about a woman who has broken up with her live-in boyfriend and finds an apartment in a rather old, and run-down but architecturally famous building in New York. It was build with odd specifications and is akin to "Hill House." The residents (all terribly aged) there are all direct descendants of the original founding families who built it to house their families as well as all of their servants. The main character moves into an apartment where the previous tenant was driven insane trying to create a "door" from one world to the next. Presumably she drowned all of her children and herself in her madness. The price is too good to pass up and so she moves in anyway. Of course, she starts to experience odd and strange things and the building seems to be "talking" to her. I wont give away anymore of the plot in case someone actually remembers this book or sees this post and wishes to read it. But, one additional note: the author actually created or "made up" a style of architecture (in which the main building is crafted) just for this book. You would think that if I could remember this much detail I could remember the name and or author. Well, youd be wrong. Sigh. Thank you to anyone who may be able to help.

Throughout the history of the AIDS epidemic, a few lucky people have avoided infection despite being exposed again and again. Now, researchers are traveling back in evolutionary time to understand why some people are resistant -- and in some cases virtually immune -- to the AIDS virus. Studies released this week and last year suggest that the roots of AIDS immunity extend back for centuries, long before the disease even existed. Our ethnic backgrounds and the illnesses suffered by our distant ancestors appear to play a crucial role in determining whether our genes will allow HIV to take hold in our bodies. For now, the findings seem likely to inspire more raised eyebrows than cutting-edge drugs. But over time, the research into why some people dont get HIV may help doctors treat those who do. By understanding which genes help people fight off infection, "we might move to a time where we can make more refined decisions about timing or intensity of therapy. Now, its like a glove where one size fits all," said Dr. Matthew Dolan, an AIDS specialist in the U.S. Air Force and co-author of a new AIDS genetics study in an online edition of the journal Science. Genetic resistance to AIDS works in different ways and appears in different ethnic groups. The most powerful form of resistance, caused by a genetic defect, is limited to people with European or Central Asian heritage. An estimated 1 percent of people descended from Northern Europeans are virtually immune to AIDS infection, with Swedes the most likely to be protected. One theory suggests that the mutation developed in Scandinavia and moved southward with Viking raiders. All those with the highest level of HIV immunity share a pair of mutated genes -- one in each chromosome -- that prevent their immune cells from developing a "receptor" that lets the AIDS virus break in. If the so-called CCR5 receptor -- which scientists say is akin to a lock -- isnt there, the virus cant break into the cell and take it over. To be protected, people must inherit the genes from both parents; those who inherit a mutated gene from just one parent will end up with greater resistance against HIV than other people, but they wont be immune. An estimated 10 percent to 15 percent of those descended from Northern Europeans have the lesser protection. Using formulas that estimate how long genetic mutations have been around, researchers have discovered that the mutation dates to the Middle Ages. (Similar research in mitochondrial DNA -- passed along by women -- has suggested that Europeans are all descended from seven Ice Age matriarchs.) Why would the mutation stick around so long instead of giving up the ghost? Researchers initially thought the mutation provided protection against the bubonic plague that caused the Black Death in Europe. Those with the mutation would have lived longer and had more children while many of their neighbors died off. The fact that the genetic mutation also provided protection against HIV centuries later would just be a coincidence. The plague scenario has been largely discarded in favor of another deadly scourge. "A disease like smallpox that has been continuous since that time ... is more likely," said Yale University professor of epidemiology Alison Galvani, who co-wrote a study about the possible smallpox link in 2003. According to Galvani, while the plague came and went, smallpox stuck around well into the 20th century, providing even more incentive for a protective gene to live on: It would keep people alive generation after generation, instead of just during one brief epidemic. to the nurse below that is exactly what they do with gene therapy they insert altered genes into every cell in your body that is the whole point of the technique. p.s. Answer: Just because they can locate information on a gene doesn't mean that replacing it in a living person is that easy. It's not like you can do a cut and paste job on every living cell in your body, and that's what you would need to do here. Every cell in your body contains a copy of your genetics, even if the cell does nothing with most of the information. Right now, it's about all the researchers can do to make glow in the dark puppies. They can insert some genetic information at the embryonic level. They can't quite do the same thing with a fully developed human. It's intriguing information no doubt, but not necessarily useful at the moment. And until they manage to figure out how to insert the desired info into your genes throughout your entire body, it's going to be that way.

Ron Paul makes me sad. Does anyone else feel that way?

I adore Ron Paul and his policies. However, I am 99% sure he wont become President, nor ever will. Therfore, supporting him would be fallacious; it would akin to supporting a tree, or a rock, both of which also cant become president. Thus, I am forced to choose between a bunch of dildos; Obama, Romney, Gingrich, Santorum. And its not fair. And it makes me sad. and RON PAUL makes me sad because HE KEEPS RUNNING giving me, and millions of others, false hope. The fact that I see him all the time, each time reminding me hell never take office; it makes me sad. :( I wish he would just stop running and give up so I dont feel so bad voting for someone else knowing there was someone good I could have voted for, who was running. So yea, does anyone understand or agree with that thinkin?
Answer: I think if you are a politician you should take a stand for what you believe in and promote your ideas. It may be that not everyone at that time shares your views, but at least if you get them out in the open others will hear them and in time people might change their opinions. If only 'popular' politicians were allowed to take to the stage, then the world would be poorer. We need debate. I suggest you post this again in the Politics and Government/Elections area to get a better response to this question. I am not an American so I have not been following Ron Paul.

I dont want to give up but I dont know what else I can do. What is the way forward for me?

Sorry this may be a bit long, please bare with me. Ive had a really horrible couple of years for a few reasons. Medical problems that have never really been resolved. Ive had to support a very close friend of mine when he faced prison. Problems with landlords. Problems with money. Problems with my weight. Problems with my parents. Losing friends. I already suffered from anxiety and what my doctor told me was a permenant "low mood" and have been prescribed anti-depressants. Ive been on so many types and none work so I am trying to deal with life without chemicals right now. I just wish I could delete the last two years from my life. I am a student and because of what happened, I am having to repeat my final year of study. I am currently at the end of the repeat year and guess what? Im in no better place now than I was this time last year. No work done. I have probably been to 5% of my lectures. I think my tutors have given up on me. Theyve even stopped emailing me asking where I am. I am so close to just throwing the whole thing away. There are two things stopping me - 1) the thought of my parents reaction when I tell them Ive quit. 2) The fact I dont want to be in debt with no degree to show for it. I need closure. But those two reason do not motivate me. They just scare me even more. Its mid-April nearly and I havent got one bit of work done and my deadline is in 3 weeks time. I cant even be sure of that to be honest but it was late April last year. Its akin to watching a train crash and not being able to do anything to stop it. I want to pass so badly but I am so scared that its too late for me. They have given me a year to get my head straight and Ive failed at that so Im worried they wont give me another chance, that Ive just been thrown in the scrap pile. I feel like Ive let everybody down again when they gave me another chance. I dont even have the nerve to email them. I know what my first step is. Its to email my university and just ask what work I need to do and for when, including word counts, etc. But I am scared they have already given up on me and I really dont want a reply saying that its too late. Sometimes I wonder whether this is worth all the stress and maybe it really is just best to throw the towel it. Its affecting my health. My hair is falling out and I am always on the verge of years. My mood is so low and I wake up every day with a stress headache.
Answer: Sounds like taking a break would do you some good, but we'll get to that in a moment. Firstly, everyone gets burned out on school. I think this is pretty much a student requirement anymore, it's just how and when that seems to differ. Remember that if it's too late it's too late, but if you don't email them and find out then you've essentially given up without even knowing if you could have done it or not, and I personally think that will (or at least should) haunt you more then failing after at least trying. While my situation isn't the same I did get caught up in some issues in my 3rd year of college as well, I quit going to my classes, failed, and... That still bothers my to this day. I've finally bounced back and plan to try again this fall but I waisted thousands of dollars in giving into stress like I did just because I felt forced to go back when I didn't feel ready. I've failed classes I've tried before and that hurts, but failing because I wouldn't bother showing up... I feel like a real idiot for that one personally. Now back to that "break" thing I was talking about. Finish up this semester, then don't go to the next one quite yet. Go do something you enjoy instead. If you like to paint, hike, do karaoke, work at an animal shelter, what ever it is that makes you happy no matter how odd just go do it for now. Then go back to school again. There's nothing wrong with taking a break from it when you need to, and it sounds like you need to. Sometimes a year isn't enough- Just explain to your parents that you want to continue school but don't think you can at this point in time. You're an adult thus it's your decision. Personally I took my break as time to go hike a chunk of the Appalachian trail for awhile; and you know what? At the end it felt like I could go back to my life and do what I needed to because taking my love of hiking and accomplishing something involving that made me happy, and doing something that makes you happy is the best kind of stress relief.

Todd Akin to get himself off Missouri's ballot as a Senate candidate, the man himself held yet another press conference to announce that he was by God (literally, in his view, by God) not dropping out despite the Republican ...... Republicans of their true feelings for the next six years and I would hope Missouri would catch so much grief and humiliation that Akin would lose his next race, if he didn't just decide to give it all up and spend the rest of his days with his family.
