Illegals arrested at coming out rally will Obama case by case grant them amnesty work permits dream act?
Police arrested at least 10 young illegal immigrants as they blocked traffic near Central Piedmont Community College Tuesday to protest policies they say discriminate against undocumented immigrants.
Nearly 200 people met on CPCCs central campus for a 1 p.m. "coming out" rally in which some protesters publicly announced theyre living in the country illegally.
The group then marched around the school toward the intersection of Kings Drive and Fourth Street. The large group proceeded to block all four directions of traffic while chanting "education, not deportation" and "undocumented and unafraid."
As Charlotte-Mecklenburg police converged on the group, seven young people stepped into the middle of the intersection. One 25-year-old from Carrboro grabbed a bullhorn and announced:
"My name is Alicia Torres and Im risking it all. Today is the day that I am coming out of the shadows and saying I exist. I am no longer going to be afraid. I am no longer going to wait around and watch my mom pray."
Before she could finish, officers encircled Torres, grabbed her arms and handcuffed her.
The protest was the latest in a series of rallies where undocumented students announced their status publicly to raise awareness.
The Tuesday protest was organized by the N.C. Dream Team, a Raleigh-based group of students, most of whom live in the country illegally. They called for passage of the Dream Act - legislation that would provide a path to legalization for some young people brought to the U.S. illegally by their parents. The bill has been introduced several times in Congress without success.
The students are known for their aggressive tactics. They have organized rallies and hunger strikes. Theyve confronted legislators. This spring, they took part in a similar protest in Atlanta where two of their members were arrested and later released.
A total of 15 people were arrested at the Charlotte demonstration. Police said all were charged with impeding traffic and disorderly conduct. Two were also charged with violation of the noise ordinance.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police Capt. J.W. Estes said their main goal was to protect the protesters. He said there was no violence and no one was hurt.
"They just wanted to get their point across," he said. "We understand their efforts, but we have to enforce the law. We cant take sides."
According to organizers, the following undocumented students were arrested, in addition to Torres: Angelica Velazquillo, 25, of Charlotte; Manuel Vazquez, 21, of Raleigh; Santiago Garcia, 20, of Asheville; Cynthia Martinez, 20, of Sanford; Viridiana Martinez of Sanford; Martin Rodriguez, 20, of Hamptonville, N.C.; Isabel Castillo, 26, of Harrisonburg, Va.; Mohammad Abdollahi; and Marco Saavedra, 21, of Cincinnati.
All the arrested individuals were taken to the Mecklenburg County Jail for processing. The sheriffs office said individuals identified as being in the country illegally will be turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. ( Ice will do what release them with a stern warning ) Case by case amnesty here ?

THREATS AND RESPONSES: DISSENT; Tens of Thousands March Against Iraq War
In what many saw as a last chance to head off military action, tens of thousands of antiwar protesters marched in several demonstrations around the country today in opposition to the Bush administrations policy on Iraq. Do you think Obamas foolish foreign policies have damaged our countries credibility at home and abroad?
As Senator, Obama was highly critical of President Bush and promised change. As President, Obama has tripled down in Afghanistan, widened the war into Pakistan, multiplied drone attacks, bombed Yemen and Somalia, and started an undeclared NATO war in Libya. On presidential war powers, surveillance questions, Guantanamo, detention policy and habeas corpus, Obama has similarly stayed the course, or expanded Bushs precedents. In a speech on May 19, 2011 Obama fully embraced the Bush Doctrine of preventative war.
The New America Foundation, which tracks the strikes, has listed 23 raids since the beginning of April, 2011, all but one in Pakistan’s tribal regions of North and South Waziristan. A June 20 attack was reported in Kurram, an area north of North Waziristan along the Afghanistan border.
The drone program has become increasingly controversial as the Obama administration has expanded its use beyond the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. Lethal missiles have been launched from unmanned aircraft in at least five countries in addition to Pakistan: Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Yemen, and, most recently, Somalia. The military’s Joint Special Operations Command used a drone last June to attack what officials said were two senior members of the Al Shabab militant group on the Somali coast.
By Obamas second year as Commander-in-Chief, 559 American troops died in Iraq and Afghanistan - significantly more than the 469 who died during Presisdent George W. Bushs final year in office. And growing numbers of civilian contractors also have fallen. In the first half of 2010, 250 contractors reportedly died in Iraq and Afghanistan - more than the 235 military personnel who fell during the same period.
Obama escalated troop strength and defense costs in Afghanistan from $43.5 billion in George Bushs last year to $113.7 billion for 2011. Adviser to General Stanley McChrystal David Kilcullen wrote, "One of the big strategic shifts is the use of language now which talks about Pakistan and Afghanistan as the same theater. Now we talked about Af-Pak long before the Obama administration came about, but the public use of that term, and the description of it as the Afghanistan-Pakistan campaign, sends a new message to people about how the administration is going to think about Afghanistan and Pakistan." This became evident when, under the orders of Obama, a military SEALs team killed September 11th mastermind Osama bin Laden in Abottabad, Pakistan.
Obama campaigned on a promise to end the War in Iraq, however 50,000 U.S. troops remain in the country.
One of Obamas campaign promises was that he would close the American detention center at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba - detainees would be flown to other countries while the ones awaiting trial would enter the American court system. Two days after taking office he signed an order directing the military to do so. But, in November 2009 Obama admitted that his self imposed deadline of January 2010 would be missed, and in March 2011 the president went back on his campaign promise, signing an executive order to create a formal system of indefinite detention for the prisoners.
In February 2011, the political unrest that had spread through the Arab world showed up as protests in Libya. Colonel Muammar el-Qaddafi - dictator of Libya for 41 years - responded to the activism with a wave of violence. The United Nations Security Council voted unanimously to impose sanctions, and later authorized all members to take action to protect civilians. Obama, acting without approval from Congress and at the beckoning of the United Nations, directed American forces to take out Libyas air defense system. Obama later said, "[I]f we waited one more day Benghazi, a city nearly the size of Charlotte, could suffer a massacre that would have reverberated across the region and stained the conscience of the world." Alan J. Kuperman - writing an editorial for the Boston Globe - suggested this statement was false, writing, "[I]ntervention did not prevent genocide, because no such bloodbath was in the offing. To the contrary, by emboldening rebellion, US interference has prolonged Libya’s civil war and the resultant suffering of innocents." Kuperman, a professor of public affairs at the University of Texas who authored a book called The Limits of Humanitarian Intervention, further stated that the rebels had tricked the world into thinking a bloodbath was at hand and that Obama had lied to the American people in order to act on this theory.
Critics point out the only thing worse than starting a "stupid, unnecessary war" against a madman is losing it.

what do you think of my characters?
My book is a post apocalyptic novel, i need some opinions on the characters ive devised so far:
Grayson
Around 18 - 21
The groups leader and main character
Extremely loyal and honourable, is prepared to do pretty much anything for his "family" and often puts himself in the most dangerous situations so as to keep them safe
Powerful fighter, mainly through an insescent training
Suffers from paranoia and lingering severe depression rooting from his younger life when he was abused by alcoholic parents, because of this, he also has a great mistrust for any authority figure
Nina
18 or 19 (younger than Gray)
Sirius younger sister and Graysons girlfriendCalm, clever and strikingly beautiful
Not an excellent fighter, Sirius and Gray constantly trying to improve her
However she was studying medicine, or planning to, depending on her age, and therefore is happier to act as the group doctor
Is the only person who can bring Gray out of his depressive moods, they have a very emotional, caring relationship and, despite it not always seeming so, Gray loves her more than anything else in the world and would lay down his life for her without a thought
Often on edge and severely claustrophobic after being trapped under rubble near the start ofthe book
Sirius
22
Grays first wingman and most trusted friend, the only person hell ever willingly confide in
Extremely proficient street fighter through months of sparring with Gray and the others, helps Gray and the older people teach the younger or less adept ones
Jovial and sarcastic, unwilling to take anything seriously, partially because of how serious the situation is
Like Gray, ferociously loyal and protective, readily willing to kill to protect people
Supportive of his friend and sisters relationship, he trusts Grayson implicitly and knows the two love each other more deeply than most
Charlotte
20
Grays second wingman and Sirius girlfriend
Funny, sweet and kind girl, tries her best to keep the group together, doing as much as she can to appease everybody in the combative environment
Quite a hunter at heart, finds it easy to be stealthy and quick to hunt and provide for the group
Lucas
32
The oldest member of the group and a devout pacifist
Dislikes Gray ferociously, hates the ease with which violence comes to him and considers himself the rightful leader of the group
Unwilling ever to fight, and takes great pride in all the photos and newspaper cuttings of protests and marches he took place in, keeping an album with him pretty much constantly
Is killed within a few chapters of the book after refusing to fight a rival group (signifies a death of civilisation, a gradual descent into tribal warfare
Russel
16
The youngest member of the group, again, dislikes Gray, but because of his relationship with Nina
Easily manipulated and acts as a Judas character later in the book, giving a government group information about them, and has promised to kill Grayson, but cant bring himself to do it when its revealed Gray is actually his half brother
Strong fighter, but a little too blunt, strong but dim
If anyone can think of backstories for these characters, subplots, anything that would be useful, even extra characters, analysis, especially for the four main characters (gray, sirius, nina and charlotte) as to how realistic, empathisable or believable they are. Its all much appreciated, thanks a lot.
Answer: i really like your characters very much. i personally think that ''lucas'' being a pacifist is great because (as a pacifist myself) i think it will make the book more interesting and help the readers choose whether they believe in violence or not rather than it just being pro-conflict propaganda. i also think that the tensions within the group could provide to be a very interesting reading and also think that ''russel'' turning out to be ''grayson's'' half brother could be interesting because it will show him go through a journey of redemption for his violent feelings towards ''grayson''. i think it would be great if you described the appearance of this post apocalyptic world in detail also. this will add profundity to the setting and make the character's environment seem more bleak. i would also suggest establishing the basics of each character early on in the book because it will give the readers time to warm to the characters. good luck with it, hope i helped.
