In your own words what was so intriguing about Marilyn Monroe to you?
Im not interested in those who didnt like her, only the ones who did.
Answer: 1.She was only the second woman (after Mary Pickford) to start her own production company. (Marilyn Monroe Productions, in 1956)
2. She led to the overhaul of the studio system- studios used to tell actors what movie they'd be in, they had no choice in the matter. She refused to do anymore 'dumb blonde' roles and walked out on her contract, which led to changes in the entire system
3. She was the first woman to get script and director approval in her films.
4. She was in the #1 rated comedy of all time, Some Like It Hot.
5. She was in the most iconic film scene of all time in The Seven Year Itch
6. She won France's Crystal Star (equivalent of the Oscar) and Italy's David di Donatello award for The Prince and the Showgirl. She also won Golden Globes, one for Best Actress in a Comedy at the 1960 ceremony and Female World Film Favorite at the 1962 ceremony.
7. She was well read and highly intelligent. Her favorite authors included Dostoevsky, Proust,Freud, and Whitman. She studied with two of the most acclaimed acting teachers of all time, Michael Chekhov and Lee Strasberg of the famed Actor's Studio.
8. She was an early advocate of civil rights. When a whites-only club refused to book African-American singer Ella Fitzgerald, one of MM's favorite singers, she personally called the club and told them if they booked Ella she would sit front row every night. She also headed the Committee For A Sane Nuclear Policy.
9. She readily gave her time and money to numerous charities including the USO, The Milk Fund, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the Arthritis Foundation, The March of Dimes, and many anonymous donations to orphanages.
10. She is an unparalleled pop culture icon. Hardly anyone reaches her stratosphere of stardom, Elvis Presley being the only one that is on the same level of enduring stardom.
11. She revolutionized the way sex was viewed- in the uptight 1950's sex was viewed as something dirty and shameful, Marilyn made it fun and funny, she could be sexy while still being proper enough to bring home to mother and it altered society in such a way to make the sexual revolution of the 1960's possible.
12. She was the very first celebrity to ever talk about sexual abuse and bring it into the open.
13. Her combination of beauty, intelligence, sexiness, and vulnerability continues to inspire legions of fans to this day, nearly 50 years after she died.
14. No other actress has ever been able been able to be so incredibly sexy while also retaining an innocence and vulnerability. This is why she continues to appeal to men while not being threatening to women. In fact, men find her attractive and often feel protective of her, women have empathy for her, relate to her, and also feel protective of her. Girls identify so well with her because she was very open about her nervousness and insecurities, and they feel that if the most glamorous woman in the world can be self conscious then it's okay that they are too.

Rep. John Lewis, Civil Rights Icon, on the Struggle to Win–and Now ...
We spend the hour looking at the bloody struggle to obtain — and protect — voting rights in the U.S. with the civil rights icon, now 13-term Georgia congressmember, John Lewis. During the 1960s, Rep. Lewis was arrested more than 40 times and beaten almost to death as he served as chair of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, marched side by side with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., helped organize the Freedom Rides, campaigned for Robert Kennedy's ...
How and why did Judy Garland become a Gay Icon? Does anybody know?
Im friends with lots of gay men and all of them seems to idolize Judy Garland and when I asked why they seem not to know. They just said that its the way it is. But Im curious, does anyone out there knows whats the answer?
Answer: Love of Judy is not universal in the gay world. Some love her, some hate her, some just don't really care.
Judy starred, as you know, in the 1939 film adaptation of "The Wizard of Oz". In the film, Dorothy escapes her sepia hometown where no one pays attention to her into a beautiful, colorful world full of adventure. She embarks on a way to get home only to be told that all she ever needed was inside her all along.
The film has become an allegory for the gay coming out experience, where you know something about yourself and in accepting that, a whole new world opens up to you.
Additionally, Judy Garland was a strong but troubled woman which seems to resonate with gays (Marilyn Monroe, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Bette Midler, Cher, etc). There's some speculation that the gay code "friend of Dorothy's" used in the forties and fifties referred to Dorothy Gale from the Wizard of Oz, but it could also refer to Dorothy Parker from the Algonquin Round Table.
Further cementing the connection, Judy died June 22, 1969. A remembrance was planned at the biggest gay bar in Manhattan on June 27th. Cops decided to raid the bar that night as the gays mourned their idol, and the patrons fought back thus sparking the gay civil rights movement and the annual Pride celebrations across the country.
For the record, I don't own a single Garland CD.

Spirituality Speaking, what was the deal with Marilyn Monroe?
I dont see the big attraction. Can somebody explain it to me? Whats your religion or lack of?
And, yes, I am hetero. I dont get why she was ever famous.
VeggieTart, I dont get Pamela Anderson, either. But, Monroe seems to have a bigger following. Maybe it is, like Denys said, the dying young part.

Why do we fight for the human rights of others, but deny them to our own citizens?
Ive gotten some flack for my icon, but how can I feel like a free American when Im denied normal civil rights.
No matter how long I am with my spouse, no matter what ceremonies we may have our government wont allow us to file our taxes as a married couple.
Our wills that name our spouses can be easily contested by families that have thrown us away and never wanted anything to do with us while we are alive, but are all too happy to come and rip off our surviving spouses of jointly owned property when we die.
Just last year my own spouse waited in a hospital waiting room and was given no word at all about my condition while a 45 minute exploratory surgery turned into a six hour ordeal with me fighting for my life.
I live with taxation without representation. why wouldnt I feel like a prisoner in my own country?
Why is it OK to deny human rights to Americans and send our young people to die to give human rights to those in other countries?
members of civil unions are offered hundreds less rights than married people are allowed the moment they say I do.
Why should I accept even one less right than any other American?
And how would you feel if by making mariage between one man and one woman somehow cause YOUR marriage to be anulled? Im neither male nor female. I never was, but I didnt always know it. does this invalitate my mariage to a man?
what if you found out you werent nearly as male or female as you thought? then whould it matter more to you who had a right and who didnt?
Answer: bush doesnt care. but i feel for ya' i think its s h i t that we're getting our freedoms stripped to protect us from "terrorists". bush is the only terrorist we have to worry about. your icon rocks!

What is it that makes Marilyn Monroe rememberable?
I do agree shes cute. I do not understand why plenty of girls are obsessed with her. What makes her so interesting or special compared to other actresses of her era. I am a big fan of classic Hollywood actresses - Rita Hayworth, Vivien Leigh, Elizabeth Taylor, etc but it seems like Marilyn Monroe seems like the most remembered.
Answer: SgtXom: First of all, "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend'' was in Gentleman Prefer Blondes, not 'How To Marry A Millionaire". It was shot in in just a few takes. Her movie "Don't Bother To Knock' used the first take on EVERY scene. Her directors gave her high praise. Joshua Logan called her an artistic genius. NO ONE ever complained about her ''lack of talent'', the complaints were about her being late to the set because of her anxiety and nervousness and needing multiple takes because she was a perfectionist and wanted to get it just right. She received praise on her acting and talent from her directors, from John Huston to Billy Wilder. She received commendations from two of the best acting teachers in the world. She won awards for her acting, and Sir Laurence Olivier himself said "She is a brilliant comedienne, which to me means she also is an extremely skilled actress." You do her a great disservice with your ''facts'' that are blatantly untrue and can be proven so by numerous sources.
Now, why she's so memorable:
1.She was only the second woman (after Mary Pickford) to start her own production company.

For National HIstory Day, my team is doing Rosa Parks. We need some legal documents. We live nowhere near any musuems on her or something, so they would prefferably be online. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Answer: I am aware that some people don't like being given a list of links to look at, if you are one of them, just ignore the answer I've given, or you can contact me and I will delete it.
Rosa Parks
Her simple act of protest galvanized America's civil rights revolution.
Most historians date the beginning of the modern civil rights movement in the United States to December 1, 1955. That was the day when an unknown seamstress in Montgomery, Alabama refused to give up her bus seat to a white passenger.

What exactly did Marilyn Monroe do that was so great?
Why are people always bigging her up?
Answer: 1. She was only the second woman (after Mary Pickford) to start her own film production company.
9. She readily gave her time and money to numerous charities including the USO, The Milk Fund, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the Arthritis Foundation, The March of Dimes, and many anonymous donations to orphanages.

13. Her combination of beauty, intelligence, sexiness, and vulnerability continues to inspire legions of fans to this day, nearly 50 years after she died. (and she DID NOT commit suicide)
I also need to address something I keep seeing:Marilyn WAS NOT a modern day size 12 or 14. Clothes were sized differently in the 50s. A 50's 12 or 14 is today's 6 or 8. Marilyn was 5'5', 115 pounds, and had a 22 inch waist. She wore a size 12 dress (which would be a size 6 today) and a size 8 pants (which would be a size 4 today)

Why is marilyn monroe an idol for so many women?
Why is marilyn monroe an idol for so many women? Yes she is beautiful but beyond that I do not see what makes her so great. In fact, I see the opposite and I dont think she should be an idol at all. I will not press my point because I do not wish to troll but I would love to hear some reasons why. Those of you who view her as an idol, why is she important to you? Its alway important to hear someone elses opinion.

What are some feminist marches/riots for equality circa 1900 - 2000 ?
or any famous feminist icons who led these marches\riot.
Answer: Here's a timeline of Feminist activism in the US during the period you've mentioned. There are also names of some popular Feminists.
In the US:
1896: The National Association of Colored Women is formed, bringing together more than 100 black women's clubs. Leaders in the black women's club movement include Josephine St. Pierre Ruffin, Mary Church Terrell, and Anna Julia Cooper.
1913: Alice Paul and Lucy Burns form the Congressional Union to work toward the passage of a federal amendment to give women the vote. The group is later renamed the National Women's Party. Members picket the White House and practice other forms of civil disobedience.
1916: Margaret Sanger opens the first U.S. birth-control clinic in Brooklyn, N.Y. Although the clinic is shut down 10 days later and Sanger is arrested, she eventually wins support through the courts and opens another clinic in New York City in 1923.
1919: The federal woman suffrage amendment, originally written by Susan B. Anthony and introduced in Congress in 1878, is passed by the House of Representatives and the Senate. It is then sent to the states for ratification.
1920: The Women's Bureau of the Department of Labor is formed to collect information about women in the workforce and safeguard good working conditions for women.
Aug. 26: The 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote, is signed into law by Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby.
1955: The Daughters of Bilitis (DOB), the first lesbian organization in the United States, is founded. It later developed into a political organization to win basic acceptance for lesbians in the United States.
1963: Betty Friedan publishes her book The Feminine Mystique, which describes the dissatisfaction felt by middle-class American housewives with the narrow role imposed on them by society.
June 10: Congress passes the Equal Pay Act, making it illegal for employers to pay a woman less than what a man would receive for the same job.
1966: The National Organization for Women (NOW) is founded by a group of feminists including Betty Friedan.
1969: California becomes the first state to adopt a "no fault" divorce law, which allows couples to divorce by mutual consent. By 1985 every state has adopted a similar law. Laws are also passed regarding the equal division of common property.
1972:
Mar. 22: The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) is passed by Congress and sent to the states for ratification. Originally drafted by Alice Paul in 1923, the amendment reads: "Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex." The amendment died in 1982 when it failed to achieve ratification by a minimum of 38 states.
Also on Mar. 22: In Eisenstadt v. Baird the Supreme Court rules that the right to privacy includes an unmarried person's right to use contraceptives.
June 23: Title IX of the Education Amendments bans sex discrimination in schools. It states: "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving federal financial assistance." As a result of Title IX, the enrollment of women in athletics programs and professional schools increases dramatically.
1978: The Pregnancy Discrimination Act bans employment discrimination against pregnant women. Under the Act, a woman cannot be fired or denied a job or a promotion because she is or may become pregnant, nor can she be forced to take a pregnancy leave if she is willing and able to work.
1984: EMILY's List (Early Money Is Like Yeast) is established as a financial network for pro-choice Democratic women running for national political office. The organization makes a significant impact on the increasing numbers of women elected to Congress.
1992: In Planned Parenthood v. Casey, the Supreme Court reaffirms the validity of a woman's right to abortion under Roe v. Wade. The case successfully challenges Pennsylvania's 1989 Abortion Control Act, which sought to reinstate restrictions previously ruled unconstitutional.
1994: The Violence Against Women Act tightens federal penalties for sex offenders, funds services for victims of rape and domestic violence, and provides for special training of police officers.
1996: In United States v. Virginia, the Supreme Court rules that the all-male Virginia Military School has to admit women in order to continue to receive public funding. It holds that creating a separate, all-female school will not suffice.
1999: The Supreme Court rules in Kolstad v. American Dental Association that a woman can sue for punitive damages for sex discrimination if the anti-discrimination law was violated with malice or indifference to the law, even if that conduct was not especially severe.
