what are some of the dangers to the environment posed by gem/metal mining and prospecting?
what are some of the danger to the environment posed by gem/metal mining and prospecting?
what are 2 toxic waste products released by mining? i know one is cyanide what are thers?
Answer: .
Environmental issues can include erosion, formation of sinkholes, loss of biodiversity, and contamination of soil, groundwater and surface water by chemicals from mining processes. In some cases, additional forest logging is done in the vicinity of mines to increase the available room for the storage of the created debris and soil. Contamination resulting from leakage of chemicals can also affect the health of the local population if not properly controlled.
In copper mines in the 19th century the mineral arsenopyrite was dumped until arsenic became popular as an insecticide later in the century.
Other possible polutants include mercury and toxic by products of mining.
Ignited methane gas is a common source of explosions in coal mines, or, the more violent coal dust explosions. Gases in mines can also poison the workers or displace the oxygen in the mine, causing asphyxiation

What are the dangers associated with drinking more water than is needed for long durations?
What effect does drinking two to three times more than the commonly accepted 8 - 10 cups of water a day have on the body (assuming that it occurs over a several week period)?
Answer: Hydration is very important, but over hydration can make you ill, or be pointing to an illness. If you seem to have increased thirst or hunger I strongly recommend that you be tested for diabetes.
Any way, you should be drinking atleast 3000ml/ 3 liters ( so get the vison of a liter of soda) per day. If you are drinking more than that please make an appointment with your doctor.

Radioactive Iodine Detected in Ocean, Despite Gains at Japanese Plant
TOKYO -- Workers made incremental progress at the stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant on Thursday, but disturbingly high radiation readings there as well as miles away continued to reinforce fears that Japans crisis was far from over. The death toll from the earthquake and tsunami that crippled the plant three weeks ago rose to nearly 11,600, - By DAVID JOLLY; Reporting was contributed by Matthew L. Even though lead levels in tap water are negligible, how much tap water can I drink until it becomes serious?
I drank a cup of tap water, and just a half an hour later, I learned that lead is in tap water. Then, I looked it up and it said the levels are negligible, or so little that you wont be harmed at all. But Id still like to know, how much can you drink before the danger increases?
Thanks!

How to increase my intake of water without needing the bathroom every 10 minutes?
Im trying to be healthy and to drink more water. At the moment Im drinking about half an average size water bottle a day, which is not very much at all.
I have two problems though:
-I rarely feel thirsty so I dont see the point in drinking when Im not
-I already need to pee more than the average person, and drinking even a little more water increases this frequency to use the bathroom, which is really annoying.
Any advice?
Answer: yea go to your doctor about an over active bladder. You should not need to urinate that frequently.
But yea, that is not enough water intake. You need the water to keep homeostasis and out the toxins in your body.
EDIT: I'm sorry I hardly ever do this but I must strongly disagree with Bee the user below me. If you are only drinking half a regular size water bottle that is not even 1 glass of water per day. That is on the extreme danger side of dehydration. If your urine is clear with that, then that is obviously a sign of some sort of bladder problem. You body is not filtering out the toxins properly. There is no way for it to be clear with a half a glass of water a day unless your body is not excreting those toxins. Plain and simple, mention this problem to your physician next time you see them. If it is very bad, don't wait for your yearly physical.

Is my water company putting too much chlorine in the water?
I have a gallon sized container that I fill up with tap water every day. When the water is cold theres no smell but as it gets warm throughout the day I can smell chlorine from the container. It really smells like a swimming pool. Is this a sign that theres too much chlorine in the public drinking water?
Answer: Not necessarily.
When one's tap water smells like chlorine it does not mean a danger to the people that drink it. Chlorine levels used in drinking water are not high enough to form a serious threat to anyone's health.
If the water has a chlorine smell, it may actually indicate that not enough chlorine is being added to the system. By increasing the amount of chlorine used at the treatment plant, different forms of chlorine are created in the water, which diminish chlorine odors.

how often do you water a jasmine plant?
am i watering it too much or too little? I water it 1 to 2 times a day. But its very gloomy and the flowers are dying.
Answer: Indoors, jasmines need at least four hours of direct sunlight daily or 14 to 16 hours of strong artificial light. Day temperatures should be 68 to 72 ° F and night temperatures 50 to 55 ° F.
: Another thing you can do to encourage bloom is to water with milk. Yup, the stuff you put in coffee. Just add a tablespoon to the watering can when you think of it or when the milk container is empty, just add water and use that for your houseplants. It will supply calcium and other minerals that encourage bloom.
ALSO
The cultural requirements of Jasmine (Jasminum polyanthum) are simple but exacting. When your plant arrives, put it in a cool room -- one where the temperature doesn't climb above 65°F and set it in a window that receives bright light but little or no direct sun. If exposed to temperatures warmer than 65° F, your plant will grow but not flower.
Jasmines are also sensitive to the dryness created by radiators, hot-air vents, and wood-burning stoves. The best way to increase the humidity around your plants is to run a humidifier nearby. You can also set plants in trays filled with pebbles or gravel. Add water to a level just below the tops of the pebbles (if the potting mix in the pots comes in contact with the water, the mix will draw water into the pot, which will cause the mix to become saturated, eventually leading to rot). Refill trays frequently to replace water lost through evaporation. (Our Humiditrays perform the same function without the need for pebbles.)
Water only when the top half inch of the potting mix is dry to the touch; Jasmine won't tolerate soggy potting mix. If these conditions are met, flowering generally begins in late January or early February.
After bloom, give your plant at least 6 hours of direct sun and normal room temperatures. When the danger of frost has passed, we recommend that you set the plant outdoors for the summer, shifting it gradually from a shady spot to full sun. Fertilize every 2-4 weeks during the growing season -- generally from early spring to early fall. Withhold fertilizer entirely during fall and winter, when the plant is resting. Use a water-soluble fertilizer designed for houseplants mixed at just half the rate suggested by the manufacturer. As with watering, plants suffer if overfertilized.
Prune as necessary to control size or to maintain shape, but stop pruning by August 1, because the plant sets flower buds in late summer. To encourage the formation of flower buds for next winter, be sure your plant experiences the cooler temperatures and shorter days of early autumn. The plant needs 4-5 weeks of nighttime temperatures between 40° and 50°F, plenty of sunlight, and the complete absence of artificial light after sundown. Bring the plant indoors before frost. Then give it cool temperatures and indirect light until it blooms again in late winter.

What is a greater danger to human civilization?
In your opinion of course.
1. Anthropogenic global warming
2. Water scarcity
3. Exponentially increasing population
I understand that there will be interactions between the three, especially between 1 and 2 and between 2 and 3 but try keep it to just one of the three.
For the one you chose what do you think should be done to slow or stop the problem?
Answer: 1
#1 contributes to #2.
#2 is a huge problem, but #1 causes #2 and many other dangers.
#3 contributes to #1 and #2, but is more easily solved (increased education, birth control, etc.) than #1.

There are more than 500 chemicals that are contaminating envirements and yet we are still creating more drilling sites that could eventually contaminate all of the united states. Why do we need the natural gases what are we replacing?
Answer: Your funny, I wouldn't worry about natural gases, the dangers are not increasing than what it was before. It is a relatively cheap, and clean source of energy. Don't fall into the greenpeace environutjob/commy propaganda. They are having a feild day because of BP ignoring the Bush administration's regulations and creating this mess.

How can I use wild animals and livestock to increase biodiversity in my garden?
I want to increase biodiversity in our very large garden. How can I use wild animals and livestock to do this?
Answer: PERMACULTURE ANSWERS ON ANIMALS WITH IN AND AROUND THE GARDEN
Try to think of the animals as components in controlled eco systems ,instead of being the king (like a pig in a pen)with you working as a slave to clean its place and supply food all the time.
PIGS
We have used pigs as labor, corralled in a place too difficult to clean .such as grass over rocky ground ,or forest or places full of bugs snakes etc.
They will clean it better than any machine or man going half a meter into the ground eating up the roots ,
When they are done ,move them to another place ,and after you have taken out the rocks the site is ready to plant.
You may have to moisten the ground and supply water and a bit of food like corn.
DUCKS & CHICKENS and other FOWLS
Normal chickens and normal ducks will destroy your garden
the chickens scratch and all the upcoming little plant literally
hit the dust
Duck work like miniature plows doing maximum damage ,especially if the ground is moist ,they work with their beaks like hoes
However Ducks contained in a pond provide a lot of fish food
Normal Chickens that are contained can be used to clear land in a chicken tractor (a movable corral )
There are many animals that can be used walking about free amongst you garden with out damage and a lot of benefit such as pest control and fertilization
The best are ,Chooks (chickens with feathers on their feet,Partridge ,Guiny fowl ,My Favorite Silkeys and Bantam chickens ,these are small chickens that run about and chase anything that moves ,they go all over the garden fertilize and catch 70 % of all garden pests that walk, jump or land .
There is also a miniature white duck which does not do a lot of damage and they are the top expert in getting rid of snails their favorite food .
Breed these little ducks and chickens and sell them to other gardeners everybody that has them is delighted with the results
The danger to them is cats and other predators and they need a dormitory to sleep in a closed chicken house with staggered pols to roost on (staggered like a staircase so thy don`t poop on each others head )
,everyday they will return in the late afternoon ,
some body must close the door after them ,
And in the morning they will rouse you to open the door so that they can go to work .
SOME MORE ANIMAL USES
Just a few more examples of organic pest control and there are thousands
In Mexico we got a sort of small lizard that lives on the wall ,and sit near the lamps ,and eat mosquito's all night,
In the mango orchards we release laboratory bred wasps to attack and kill the caterpillars that go for the mango's
Birds we also don't kill
when the passion fruit is ripe ,a little black Caterpillar comes and wants to destroy them, luckily a little finch type bird turns up and eats the black caterpillars.
Place poles with bird feeders on some compost
and visiting birds will drop some interesting seeds ,that can germinate below,
Have bird houses in the trees to encourage caterpillar feeders to move in.
In Mexico we have let mazacoas, which are, python type snakes in to the garden to take care of the rats.
In Africa we released mole snakes into the garden and field to combat the plagues of Norwegian rats that were destroying the fields
Ant eaters take care of leaf cutting ants that can destroy a large tree in a week.
Armadillos eat Beatles and such, but they will eat all the worms in your worm culture and dig up the garden like pigs, so you have to fence them out
Potbelly pigs and deer and normal pigs are good in an orchard because they eat fallen rotting fruit which breeds a lot of small flies. You have to corral these in
In our water reservoirs we put fish to eat the mosquito larva's.
I have bred tree frogs from eggs and released them in the garden to eat mosquito's and horse flies.
Apart from the fact that many animals serve as food for people Animals In Nature have jobs ,each full fills a function in their respective eco -systems
some examples that can be around a garden are
squirrels who plant trees ,so do many birds
bees and other insects pollinate so have some bee hives
fish keep the waters clean from contamination
Any other animals you may have place them in the most useful place,so that an energy flow can be created
For example the chicken house above the vegetable patch and below the house in elevation so that you can lead the rain water from the roof of the house with a channel (from the house roof gutter) ,through the chicken house ,washing it clean and leading the fertilized water ,on into the vegetable patch ,every time it rains.
You can also have pigpens with a sloping floor or chicken houses with the roosting poles .on the edge of a fish pond to supplement the fish food.
have gutters sloping floors in the stables to collect urine and make for easy cleaning of the manure ,to be used as fertilizer.
Make a worm culture to produce the best compost in the world with the house hold organic wastes.
NOTE
So the main job is housing and management
Peacocks are very destructive and the noise will drive you crazy after a while

How often should you clean/do a water change for a 10 gallon fish tank?
I have 10 gallon tank, with a couple of tetra. This is my first official tank so how often should I perform a water change, or even clean the tank itself. When adding water conditioner or aquarium salt do I add it with the fish inside? Help....?
Answer: Aquarium salt is not some general tonic that people make it out to be! It can be outright dangerous to just keep adding it to your tank. And if you are using it, it should be dissolved before adding to the system. It is useful in some cases, like nitrate poisoning and when used with the ich heat treatment. Most people do suffer high nitrates, which is where this myth came about! Their fish stopped dying as fast, but the underlying problem remained as salt is only a temporary fix, like giving a respirator to people in a burning building but not letting them out of the building or putting the fire out....they can breath better for a little while but are still in danger.
This brings us to the topic of nitrates. They will slowly build up in the system over time, and one of the main reasons frequent water changes are necessary (not the only reason so even with 0 nitrates, do occasional water changes to replenish trace elements, buffer capacity, etc). you should do water changes as needed to keep your nitrates as low as possible, at the worst you want to keep them below 20ppm, but really aim to keep them below 10ppm. So first off, get a nitrate test kit.
A good starting point is 10-25% once a week in water changes.
You can gravel vac every water change, or only do the gravel once a month. If not gravel vacuuming ever change, you would simply drain 10-25% of the water and fill back up with conditioned tap water of the same temperature as the tank (can add the conditioner directly to the tank, or to the water before adding to the tank). This will help replenish lost trace elements as well as dilute the nitrate and any other toxins building up in the tank. You should test the water and increase the frequency or volume of your water changes if the nitrates or other toxins climb every week.
The filter should be rinsed as needed, but be sure to rinse in conditioned tap water of the same temperature of the tank, or in tank water you have drained from the tank. The reason is that beneficial bacteria (the biological filter) colonize on surfaces, especially the filter media. These little critters are converting toxic ammonia into less toxic nitrate and making the aquarium fairly safe for fish. Rinse in chlorinated water, or overly hot or cold water, and you will kill this bacteria, potentially causing an ammonia spike in the tank, harming the fish. If you do replace the filter media, do not gravel vac that week. But do remember to replace carbon once every 1-3 months as it is the chemical media and does wear out over time.
Remove algae as needed to keep the tank looking clean. A magfloat is a great tool!
Also, if the algae gets bad, know you likely have high nitrates and should step up the water changes! Some algae is unavoidable, especially in well lit rooms, but excessive algae usually indicates a problem.

What is a good schedule for me to stay on if im trying to lose 5 pounds a week for 3 weeks?
Im 16 years old, 55 and 145 pounds. I used to be 130 pounds but I gained weight. I want to lose 15 pounds in 3 weeks. And Im really trying and pushing hard. Im trying to drink plenty of water and I even try to eat 6 times a day but small meals. Someone told me that it was a good way and it worked for them. Please help!
Answer: PLEASE don't try to lose more than two pounds per week. It's terribly unhealthy and a danger to your body. Weight loss takes time and patience- and the results and how healthy you will look and FEEL are worth the effort and the wait.
There are dozens of things you can do to lose weight quickly, efficiently, and safely, without sacrificing yummy foods :) Here are the ten best, easiest ways. These are all-natural and don't involve you having to buy any weird foods, shakes, or miracle diet pills or follow any tedious diet plans. I cannot tell you enough to DRINK LOTS OF WATER! It keeps you full- sometimes when we think we're hungry we're really just dying for a drink! Plus, studies show that increased water intake can boost metabolism. Water is one of the best things you can do to lose weight. The best of luck to you!
1. Eat lots of protein. (cheese, Greek yogurt, lean meats like chicken and turkey breast, egg whites) It keeps you full and protein has only 4 calories per gram. Eat lots of fiber. It improves your digestive health and helps keep you full. These two changes alone may take a while for your body to get used to, so increase both in small increments.
2. Try to cut refined carbs (white rice, white bread, white pasta, soda, sugary cereals, sweetened drinks- anything with added sugars or processed flours, etc.) from your diet. Instead, fill yourself with healthy carbs (fruits, vegetables, whole wheat bread without high fructose corn syrup, quinoa, brown rice, whole-wheat pasta). Instead of orange or apple juices, eat the actual fruits. Use Truvia in your coffee instead of Splenda or sugar. Once you get used to it, you'll learn to appreciate the hearty tastes and textures of unrefined carbs, and they have fewer calories per amount of volume, plus they make you feel fuller faster.
3. Do cardio (running, vigorous walking, stairs, swimming, heavy cycling, rollerblading) at least 3 days a week for at least 30 minutes. Alternate those three days with yoga, anaerobic exercises like weight lifting, etc. for at least an hour.
4. Drink lots of milk, preferably skim. Calcium has been shown to help with weight loss.
5. Always fill your plate with half fruits/ vegetables, a quarter protein, a quarter carbs. Try to not go back for seconds on the carbs.
6. Exchange the plates in your house for smaller ones. Studies show that we eat less when we eat from smaller plates because we feel like we're eating more.
7. If, on a scale from one to ten, ten is how full you feel after Thanksgiving dinner, you should eat a 4 for breakfast, a 5 for lunch, and a 4 for dinner.
8. Don't eat until you're full, but until you're satisfied. Eat slowly- it takes about 20 minutes for the stomach to tell the brain that you're full.
9. Learn to love cooking. When you cook your own meals, you can know exactly how many calories you are consuming- no restaurant chefs to hide fats and empty carbs in your food! Visit a website like eatbetteramerica.com. They have tons of delicious recipes that are relatively low-calorie, even desserts. However, make dessert a once-a-week treat. You will learn to appreciate it more, and you'll be consuming less calories per day.
10. Snack smart- almonds, even only ten of them when your stomach is growling at work before lunch can satisfy your hunger for hours. A slice of cheese has protein and can fill you right up also, especially if you drink a bottle of water afterwards. Also, try a handful of Triscuts with salsa or hummus (no dressings like ranch or bleu cheese- dressings and condiments like these and also mayonnaise can RUIN your diet. Stick to oil and vinegar for your salads, salsa, homemade guacamole, mustard, steak sauces, and no-high-fructose-corn-syrup ketchup). Limit yourself to two snacks a day, and only if you're hungry- one midmorning, one before your workout at night/ in the afternoon.
Find it in you to be disciplined and stick with these ten tips. They're the key to healthy living and a healthy lifestyle choice- and very effective! Good luck! I believe in you!

Is it better to drink 4 bottles of water separately or all at the same time?
In case you didnt know, 4 bottles of water is equal to 8 cups, which is the recommended amount of water to drink daily!
I know this may sound stupid, but is it better to drink them separately or all at the same time? Does it matter?
Will they both give me the same results?
Answer: dont drink that much water all at once!! You can actually over hydrate, it can effect your blood by increasing its volume you are putting your brain and kidneys in danger from being damaged.
andyway the whole 8 cups of water thing a day is an old wives tale however its generally a good rule of thumb. How much water you need to intake depends on your size and gender, how much physical exercise you take etc. Also any liquid you take counts towards your daily intake of water. just dont drink it all at once, you'll make yourself sick.....

How long can I keep my baby in water?
How long can I keep my 7 week old baby in water whether in bath or in a swimming pool?
Answer: At 7 weeks old, the ear canal isn't very developed for the baby. The result is you need to keep the baby's head out of water, so mostly a sponge bath in baths. Since they cool down rather quickly, it's best to keep the baby in the bath for as long as it takes to wash them, then into a dry towel.
In the pool... it depends. Indoor pools have been proven to increase the problems with allergies and asthma, as well as an increase of ear-infections among other diseases. Outdoor pools have an increase of diseases just like the indoor ones, but don't have as many long-term allergies and asthma problems. Private outdoor pools are probably pretty safe. Even so, experts tend to recommend nothing longer than 5-10 minutes. They're just so little and so easily chilled that there's dangers for longer than that. And keep their head above the water until they're over 2 and their ear-canals stiffen up.

When do I start giving my breasfed baby water?
And if so, what water?
Answer: You dont need to before 6 mths of age when they typically start solids... even in warm weather! You'll drink more water yourself, increasing the naturally high water content in your milk, and your baby will get everything they need that way. You already have a great link from the site Kellymom from someone. And never put sugar in the water when you do start, there is no reason to do that. If your baby is thirsty they should drink it plain. Bottled or tap water, that was a ? a few days ago from someone. I'll go find my answer and paste it in here.
I agree with some comments about bottled water being no better than some tap water (in fact, where I used to live in Alaska they put the tap water in bottles and sold it as 'bottled water'... very funny! It was good water though, dont get me wrong, but why pay for it!!!) but you need to be sure what your water has been treated with. I think some cities add too much flouride into the water, which can cause baby to have blotches/stains on their teeth when they are older. Not to mention high levels of chlorine. You also have to be careful when picking bottled water, not all bottled water is good for them either.
Ok, just googled this and here's part of an article from the link below talking about the flouride in tap water:
BOTTLE-FED babies are receiving excess fluoride because their formula is made using fluoridated tap water, a Food Safety Authority of Ireland assessment indicates.
The Department of Health asked the FSAI to investigate the impact of fluoridated tap water on infants amid concern at studies linking fluoride to cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, hip fractures, dental fluorosis and thyroid disorders.
Anti-fluoridation campaigners claim that new-borns who are fed formula-prepared with tap water are receiving three times the limit recommended by the British Medical Association, while a three-month old child receives up to six times the limit.
In the US, the Academy of General Dentistry advises that in fluoridated areas "it is recommended that parents use low fluoride bottled distilled water or tap water with a reverse osmosis home water filtration system attached that removes most of the fluoride.
"As a group of health care professions, we have a duty to protect public health and therefore we will be initiating a nationwide publicity campaign to highlight the dangers of using tap water to make up infants' feed," Dr Mac Auley said.
Better to be safe than sorry with this sort of stuff I think.

Its a high time for high fantasy. Novels about wizards outsell (and often outshine) the most glittering literary fiction titles; the contemporary romantic hero generally sports a pair of fangs; and even now the five remaining earthlings who havent read The Lord of the Rings are being hunted down and put to the sword. Yet for all of fantasys - David Orr writes the On Poetry column for the Book Review and is the author of Beautiful and Pointless. - By DAVID ORR

How Often Should I Water My Venus Fly-trap?
I got one a few days ago and i need to know how often i should water it. I also want to know if the place i have it is in a good place. It is in a small aquarium with a light, of course there is no water filled in it. will it do ok?
Answer: Venus flytraps should be kept in pots on a patio, deck or position in the garden that receives at least 6-8 hours of sunlight per day.[6] In areas of lower humidity, it is best to place plants in very wide water trays in an attempt to increase humidity levels. Better still, grow Venus flytraps in a greenhouse which often leads to healthy, vigorous and colourful plants. The colour of the trap leaves may be used as an indicator of sufficient light. In appropriate conditions the inside of each trap should be bright red in color for most varieties. In insufficent light the inside of the traps turn light green. Low light also causes etiolation and makes plants more susceptible to diseases.
Venus Flytraps ideally should not be watered with tap water as accumulated salts in tap water may kill carnivorous plants. Soft water with TDS of 100 ppm or less yields good growth, both distilled water or clean rain water are ideal. The soil should be kept constantly moist by placing the pot in a tray full of water, with the root bulb of the plant allowed to be above the level of the water at least part of the time, to prevent root rot in stagnant water. There is no danger of over-watering. Venus flytraps can survive short periods of immersion underwater.[6]
