Thanksgiving traditions alive and well : Latest News, Information, Answers and Websites

Okay, so Im ready to do a real tree. If I keep it watered all the time can I leave the lights on?

- Whats the earliest after Thanksgiving I can get it and itll still be alive at Christmas? - How much do they cost (average ceiling height)? - Is it true I cant keep the lights on all the time? This could be a deal breaker for me. What if I never let it get dry? - Will the dog pee on it? Its for next year. I thought that was obvious.
Answer: We got a live one that we can replant this year. It was awesome. We bought it the first week of December from a local nursery that sells native plants and trees. It was a 10' Southern Red Cedar (one of the few pine-like trees that are native to Florida) and cost $65. So it was less than a fake and a little more than a live cut tree. Came in a big plastic planter that we covered with a large trash bag and put a tree skirt over. We watered it every few days and drug it outside to replant this morning. Kids and dad are going to plant it in our yard this afternoon. I think this will be a new holiday tradition for us. It stayed fresh and healthy while indoors and really wasn't too messy. I vacuumed around it maybe once a week? Mess wasn't really too big of an issue. We left our lights on it 75% of the time and it did fine. Our dog didn't even pay attention to it (chocolate lab mix).

Is it true that people South of France are way different than the ones up north?

Jeroen Wijnands, "each region still has its own traditions and cuisine." can you explain more.
Answer: Think of the Americans: they have common national customs like Thanksgiving and Halloween and they have steak or burger houses in every state, but the people in Texas have also different local traditions, legends, history and cuisine to that of people in Louisiana, Arkansas, or Maine. Obviously France is much smaller, but the country has different climates, physical features, agriculture, and borders. France is also a mix of different ethnic origins and is also surrounded by several countries with different traditions and culture, so there are some areas where there is an overlap with its neighbours. In the North East, Alsace for instance is more Germanic in character as it has changed hands numerous times. In the North West the Normans are descendants of Vikings whilst, in the West, Bretons are fiercely Gaelic and share original roots with the Scots, the Welsh, the Irish and the Cornish in the UK. In the South West we have the Basques, whose local language, shared with those on the other side of the Spanish border is totally unlike either French or Spanish and is a complete maverick linguistically as it is not related to Celtic or Roman culture. Until the last century, and the end of three major wars, despite a national unity, regions retained a very distinctive way of life and conserved a very different character. Then there was a leap into a more modern infra structure, compounded by the dramatic evolution in the media. Until then access to the more remote areas was not easy and the interface between regions was more tenuous. So local customs were preserved and also local dialects to a certain extent, despite the drive of the French government to eradicate them. Other things were kept much alive because people were very attached to their regional individuality such as very lovely local costumes, traditional dances, local celebrations such as 'pardons' in Brittany, the 'fêtes des fleurs' in Provence, the Christmas sheep procession in Les Baux, the celebration of the end of corn harvest, that of the gathering of grapes in wine making areas, the 'herring feast' in northern coastal towns, the 'oyster feast" in the areas where these are grown, processions with local 'giants' in the towns at the Northern tip of France, or carnivals in the South. In French Flanders and in Alsace they will celebrate the feast of Saint Nicolas on the 6th December, whilst French gypsies will gather in pilgrimages to Saintes Marie de la mer, in Camargue, in May. Traditional cuisine is based on locally found or grown ingredients, the type of animal raised in an area or the closeness to the sea. Much was made of this, and remained embedded in localities as specialities. Some have been adopted nationally too, so you will eat Boeuf Bourguignon more or less anywhere in France and no longer just in Bourgogne. But if you go anywhere in France, you will find something that remains very special to the area, be it goose liver, dried sausages, a cake, a liquor, a kind of ham, candies, or locally made traditional delicacies at the pork butchers or the local patisserie. So yes, there are differences between North and South, East and West. However with the easiness of travel and transport, modernisation and in-coming influences from the exterior, a good number of local traditions are only kept alive by the older generations. Younger people are not so keen on what they consider 'old fashioned', or cannot be bothered with. Some crafts that were special to an area have now been taken over by machine made goods imported from Asia. For instance bone china manufacture and decoration, which were very specific to the Limoges area is slowly going downhill, replaced by less traditional universal dinner ware. The fashion for minimalism and modern furniture has undermined the tradition of acquiring local antiques or keeping 'useless' objects from one generation to the other. Quick foods have made in-roads and young people will dash into a Mac Donald's rather than sit down for a traditional meal. So, progressively, the differences between one area and another are being erased, and even French culture as a whole is being altered to fit into a larger mondial context. Obviously many places will retain some individual character, if only because it is that which brings tourists, who like "couleur locale", to an area, and there also is now a rebellion against global uniformity and the loss of local culture, with certain regions making a very deliberate effort to revive their local dialects, or preserve what is left of local customs and traditions .

What all do I need to know to do a Puerto Rican Awarness booth?

Traditional Puerto Rican Foods,Dances ect.
Answer: CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONS Puerto Rican culture is alive in our community. Puerto Ricans keep their customs strong by keeping their traditions. Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Day, and Puerto Rican Day are the best times to see, hear, and feel the spirit of being Puerto Rican. On these holidays Puerto Rican families come together. People in our community enjoy what it is to be a family- Puerto Rican and American. And being American you can either speak English or Spanish and make new traditions. We celebrate the holidays much like the people in Puerto Rico do. Parents and grandparents bless the children with "La Bendicion". We stay in touch with our families and help out when needed. We also try to speak our language at home so that it is handed down from one generation to the next. Every year Puerto Rican families in New York celebrate Puerto Rican Day either by joining or watching the parade in Manhattan with a Puerto Rican flag in hand or just viewing it on TV. They also hang flags in their cars or homes. This is one way many Puerto Ricans remember and show pride in their culture. This has been a tradition for many years and it is a way of keeping Puerto Rican culture alive and strong. Christmas time is a special celebration for everyone every year. Everyone in the family comes together and enjoys a great time. We sing, dance, and eat many traditional food, such as "all-you-can-eat-buffet" at Christmas with rice, pigeon peas, roast pork, vegetables, and cakes or sweets. It is a mix traditional Puerto Rican and American treats with candy canes, chocolates, and other treats for children. Special Navidena music is played during this special holiday season. You can also hear Latin music and see the people dancing the Salsa and the Bolero. For this occasion, we do not wear special clothing or costume. We dress comfortably to enjoy the occasion. http://welcome.topuertorico.org/history.shtml Although Puerto Rican cooking is somewhat similar to both Spanish and Mexican cuisine, it is a unique tasty blend of Spanish, African, Taíno, and American influences, using such indigenous seasonings and ingredients as coriander, papaya, cacao, nispero, apio, plantains, and yampee. Locals call their cuisine "cocina criolla". Cocina criolla (Créole cooking) can be traced back to the Arawaks and Tainos, the original inhabitants of the island, who thrived on a diet of corn, tropical fruit, and seafood. When Ponce de León arrived with Columbus in 1493, the Spanish added beef, pork, rice, wheat, and olive oil to the island's foodstuffs. Soon after, the Spanish began planting sugarcane and importing slaves from Africa, who brought with them okra and taro (known in Puerto Rico as yautia). The mingling of flavors and ingredients passed from generation to generation among the different ethnic groups that settled on the island, resulting in the exotic blend of today's Puerto Rican cuisine. Appetizers & Soups Lunch and dinner generally begin with sizzling-hot appetizers such as bacalaitos, crunchy cod fritters; surullitos, sweet plump cornmeal fingers; and empanadillas, crescent-shaped turnovers filled with lobster, crab, conch, or beef. Soups are a popular beginning for meals on Puerto Rico. There is a debate about whether one of the best-known soups, frijoles negros (black-bean soup), is Cuban or Puerto Rican in origin. Nevertheless, it is still a savory, if filling, opening to a meal. Another classic soup is sopón de pollo con arroz -chicken soup with rice- which manages to taste somewhat different in every restaurant. One traditional method of preparing this soup calls for large pieces of pumpkin and diced potatoes or yautias (the starchy root of a large-leaved tropical plant whose flesh is usually yellow or creamy white). The third classic soup is sopón de pescado (fish soup), prepared with the head and tail intact. Again, this soup varies from restaurant to restaurant and may depend on the catch of the day. Traditionally, it is made with garlic and spices plus onions and tomatoes, the flavor enhanced by a tiny dash of vinegar and a half cup of sherry. Galician broth (caldo gallego) is a dish imported from Spain's northwestern province of Galicia. It is prepared with salt pork, white beans, ham, and berzas (collard greens) or grelos (turnip greens), and the whole kettle is flavored with spicy chorizos (Spanish sausages). Garbanzos (chickpeas), are often added to give flavor, body, and texture to Puerto Rican soups. One of the most authentic versions of this is sopón de garbanzos con patas de cerdo (chickpea soup with pig's feet). Into this kettle is added a variety of ingredients, including pumpkin, chorizos, salt pork, chile peppers, cabbage, potatoes, tomatoes, and fresh cilantro leaves. Not really a soup, the most traditional Puerto Rican dish is asopao, a hearty gumbo made with either chicken or shellfish. One well-known version, consumed when the food budget runs low, is asopao de gandules (pigeon peas). Every Puerto Rican chef has his or her own recipe for asopao. Asopao de pollo (chicken asopao) takes a whole chicken, which is then flavored with spices such as oregano, garlic, and paprika, along with salt pork, cured ham, green peppers, chile peppers, onions, cilantro, olives, tomatoes, chorizos, and pimientos. For a final touch, green peas or asparagus might be added. Main Dishes The aroma that wafts from kitchens throughout Puerto Rico comes from adobo and sofrito -blends of herbs and spices that give many of the native foods their distinctive taste and color. Adobo, made by crushing together peppercorns, oregano, garlic, salt, olive oil, and lime juice or vinegar, is rubbed into meats before they are roasted. Sofrito, a potpourri of onions, garlic, coriander, and peppers browned in either olive oil or land and colored with achiote (annatoo seeds), imparts the bright-yellow color to the island's rice, soups, and stews. Stews loom large in the Puerto Rican diet. They are usually cooked in a caldero or heavy kettle. A popular one is carne guisada puertorriqueña; (Puerto Rican beef stew). The ingredients that flavor the chunks of beef vary according to the cook's whims or whatever happens to be in the larder. These might include green peppers, sweet chile peppers, onions, garlic, cilantro, potatoes, olives stuffed with pimientos, or capers. Seeded raisins may be added on occasion. Meat pies (pastelón de carne) are the staple of many Puerto Rican dinners. Salt pork and ham are often used for the filling and are cooked in a caldero. This medley of meats and spices is covered with a pastry top and baked. Other typical main dishes include fried beefsteak with onions (carne frita con cebolla), veal (ternera) a la parmesana, and roast leg of pork, fresh ham, lamb, or veal, a la criolla. These roasted meats are cooked in the Créole style, flavored with adobo. Puerto Ricans also like such dishes as breaded calfs brains (sesos empanados), calfs kidney (riñones guisados), and stuffed beef tongue (lengua rellena). A festive island dish is lechón asado, or barbecued pig, which is usually cooked for a party of 12 or 15. It is traditional for picnics and al fresco parties; one can sometimes catch the aroma of this dish wafting through the palm trees, a smell that must have been familiar to the Taino peoples. The pig is basted with jugo de naranjas agría (sour orange juice) and achiote coloring. Green plantains are peeled and roasted over hot stones, then served with the barbecued pig as a side dish. The traditional dressing served with the pig is ali-li-monjili, a sour garlic sauce. The sauce combines garlic, whole black peppercorns, and sweet seeded chile peppers, flavored further with vinegar, lime juice, and olive oil. Puerto Ricans adore chicken, which they flower various spices and seasoning. Arroz con pollo (chicken with rice) is the most popular chicken dish on the island, and it was brought long ago to the U.S mainland. Other favorite preparations include chicken in sherry (pollo al jerez), pollo agridulce (sweet and sour chicken), and pollitos asados a la parrilla (broiled chickens). Most visitors to the island seem to like the fish and shellfish. A popular fried fish with Puerto Rican sauce (mojo isleño). The sauce is made with olives and olive oil, onions, pimientos, capers, tomato sauce, vinegar, and a flavoring of garlic and bay leaves. Fresh fish is often grilled, and perhaps flavored with garlic and an overlay of freshly squeezed lime juice -a very tasty dinner indeed. Caribbean lobster is usually the most expensive item on any menu, followed by shrimp. Puerto Ricans often cook shrimp in beer (camarones en cerveza). Another delectable shellfish dish is boiled crab (jueyes hervidos). Many tasty egg dishes are served, especially tortilla española (Spanish omelet), cooked with finely chopped onions, cubed potatoes, and olive oil. The rich and fertile fields of Puerto Rico produce a wide variety of vegetables. A favorite is the chayote, a pear-shaped vegetable called christophone throughout most of the English-speaking Caribbean. Its delicately flavored flesh is often compared to that of summer squash. Breadfruit, prepared in a number of ways, frequently accompanies main dishes. This large, round fruit from a tropical tree has a thick green rind covering its starchy, sweet flesh. The flavor is evocative of a sweet potato. Tostones -fried green breadfruit slices- accompany most meat, fish, or poultry dishes served on the island. Tostones may also be made with plantains. In fact, the plantains seems to be the single most popular side dish served on the island. Plantains are a variety of banana that cannot be eaten raw. They are much coarser in texture that ordinary bananas and are harvested while green, then baked, frie

How do I handle the Holidays?

This it going to be the first year without my Aunt who was like my mom. We had alote of things that we did every year and I really need to try and change this year so I dont spend to hole time crying. She died very sudden we had no clue. Every year she helped me decorate my tree on Thanksgiving afternoon and was at my house at Christmas to watch my children open there presents. My son who is the oldest and is having the hardest time really needs these holidays to be nonstressful any Ideas? My son is 10 my daughter is 5.
Answer: I just lost my precious seven month old baby boy about two months ago and I have been asking myself the same thing. Since Fall has been here I can walk outside and smell that "Christmas Scent". Everytime I smell that scent my stomach goes in to a knot because I was dreading it. Our familiy is big on holdiays and traditions and I am so sad that I don't have my precious son here to create the Christmas memories with. I was telling one of my friends of how hard the holidays were going to be without him and she told me not to worry because just imagine how BIG and BEAUTIFUL Christmas is in Heaven. I have that in my mind now. When he was here on Earth I had big plans on creating those "Happy" holidays and Special memories for him but wow just imagine how happy and special it is like in Heaven for our Angels (your aunt and my son) I bet it's just gorgeous. I guess all we can do now is to keep their memories alive especially around the holidays. Some other ideas might be to set up her pictures around the tree and light a candle for her. Do something special in here memory. Have the kids write a special Christmas message on balloons and release them. Good Luck & God Bless

Why is it we only have music songs for the Christmas holidays. What happened to the other holidays.?

If a snow man is coming to town, and if we have a reindeer with a red nose, Why can we sing about a turkey or a mean old witch,or all the other holidays.
Answer: There are quite a few reasons for this actually. Caroling came about as a result of an old tradition called Wassailling, where villagers would go door to door to sing and beg for goodies. This is seen in the Classic Christmas songs, Here We Go A'Wassailling and We Wish You a Merry Christmas. (Look at the verses, Oh Bring Us Some Figgy Pudding, and We Won't Go Until We Get Some.) In order to go Wassailing, or caroling, it is, of course, necessary to have song to sing while you are doing it. Probably more important, in this case, because this is still going on. People write songs about Christmas, because it is a beautiful holiday to them. The Christ Child being born still inspires many modern singers to write new songs including The Dixie Chicks and Garth Brooks. Plus, add Santa Claus and Presents, there's alot to write about. Thanksgiving, on the other hand, has Turkey and...ummm...football games. Thanksgiving is often seen in our society as a "throw away" holiday. Either a dry run for Christmas' Feast or a time for people that won't be able to make it for Christmas to show up and eat. Anyone writing a song for Halloween would be ostracized immediately as a dreaded PAGAN. And Easter, being the holiday that celebrates the DEATH of Jesus, doesn't inspire many songs, although Dolly Parton has one that I know of, entitled "He's Alive", and there may be more, although they probably aren't on any "Easter Carol" lists. The only 2 non-Catholic, Christian holidays celebrated in the U.S. is Easter and Christmas. Catholics can add All Saint's Day and St. Valentines' Day. Although there are lots of Love songs, none of them are associated with St. Valentines' Day. Hope this helps, Merlin

why is the radio station saying the end of thanksgiving will come 2035?

I heard it on the local radio station, in houston 95.7... I dont understand, how can you get rid of a special holiday where you give other than take and be around your family while grandma can cook a big feast for the whole family. If this is true, then whats next? Christmas?
Answer: Never heard of it. But not if I'm alive... Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. I doubt Christmas will go anywhere either, except it will just keep morphing as it aways does based on the dominant religions and beliefs. It's getting more and more secularized now, but the traditions were here before Christianity and will probably be here after.

Why are holidays usually associated with the consumption of saturated animal fats?

Memorial Day, Grilling burgers and hot dogs, 4th of July, Grilling burgers and hot dogs -- again, Thanksgiving, Turkey Christmas, Ham What do you think George Washington would say about all of this?
Answer: They are not for me. I like the Memorial Day and Labor Day cook-out tradition, and eat a vegan diet, so I buy Light Life brand Tofu Pups for the hot dog shape. As I must be gluten-free, I put them on Ener-G foods English Muffins, which taste great, and add some mustard. Thanksgiving I eat cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, corn, gluten-free vegan stuffing, fresh fruit and nuts. Salad, of course. Christmas I eat salad, veggie stir-fry, roast potatoes, fresh fruit. George Washington was not alive when Memorial Day, Labor Day or T-Day were national holidays, and in his time there was no hype about Christmas traditions. People ate what was seasonally available in the region they lived in. Therefore, your second q. is not applicable. ....................................................................................................................................................................

Do you accept the fur trade? Is there really people who skin animals after their dead?

I think its cruel but some people do it right. Ive watched internet clips of people skinning animals alive and seen people skin animals after their dead, which is okay. It breaks my heart to watch it because i really love all animals. I dont wear fur but i do eat meat. how do you feel about fur trade? Is there really people out there that skin animals after their dead? Do they kill it in a simple process or is torture always involved in the killing?
Answer: I am a 3rd generation trapper, and now teaching my grandchildren the same. There may be some cruel people out there but you have to believe me, most hunters are very humane in that we don't like to see animals suffer. The traps used in the fur trade are "offset" meaning they have a gap when they close, they DO NOT shut all the way. The traps come in different sizes to catch the animal you are searching for. A #2 is bobcat or fox size but anything smaller than that and they slip right out. The traps are spring loaded and snap quickly but DO NOT harm. Believe me I have caught my fingers in them on accident hundreds of times and although it smarts a little, I still have 10 fingers. I can make $6000 to $8000 in a season. The season is 2 months only, opens Thanksgiving day and runs through January. We're up to our knees in snow, it's cold and wet and misreable but, its a tradition. The fur trade is down because of all the controversy, most of our fur goes to Europe. Right now I get $35 for bobcat and $14 for fox. Every year for 60 years there have been plenty of bobcat and fox in the wild and for hundreds of years before that. It is a RENEWABLE resource, just like trees as long as you don't abuse it. Trappers and hunters help keep the numbers managable to our society, if they out number themselves they starve or disease. And society makes their habitat smaller and smaller by building...... hope this helps.

When do you start preparing for the holidays?

Its October, we have halloween, thanksgiving, and your chosen religious day coming up, christmas, kwanzaa or hanukah. When do you start getting ready and what do you plan to do this year to decorate? Any special tricks or really cute ideas to share?
Answer: I start preparing six weeks ahead for major holidays, like the Days of the Dead and Winter Solstice. This is because I need time to make decorations and some holiday recipes need ahead preparation...like time for fruits to soak in liquor, or cakes and candies to 'set'. I also prefer to send hand made cards and that takes time to come up with an idea, buy the materials, make the card and add appropriate messages. Here is my smartest holiday "trick"...remember the reason for whatever holiday you are preparing for, what it's really about and keep that as the focus, you can't go wrong. Too often we get bogged down in the unimportant aspects and end up feeling pressured and empty. Keep it simple, do a few nice things each year. Don't think you have to repeat every neat thing every year, it's fine to just do a tradition every three or five years, still keeps it alive, but relieves the pressure of having to do it ALL each year. In fact, it's often more special when there is a little gap between repeats. Involve others...let everyone have some say so and some responsibility in making the holiday happen. Establish ahead of time what is a MUST for you, and don't let that get lost in the shuffle. Leave yourself enough time and energy to enjoy the holiday traditions that are most meaningful to you, even if that means a few other things don't happen.

Nov 14, 2012 ... Keeping the tradition of Thanksgiving alive and well while overseas may seem a daunting task but in all honesty it is easier than you might think ...

Why do new parents smoke a cigar in celebration where and when did this start?

Answer: Think cigars are out of style when it comes to announcing a birth? Well, not quite! They are just as hip as ever. Why stray from tradition? Add a birth-announcement cigar to your list of ways to announce and celebrate your new addition. Although no one knows for certain how passing out cigars began, it is believed that the tradition was handed down to our culture from Native Americans from the Northwest Coast. This tradition involved a ceremony called the "potlatch", which celebrated weddings and births. To keep others from being jealous of one's possessions, this huge, lavish celebration included the host sharing his riches with the community. Community members would smoke together, blowing the smoke towards the sun to please the gods and show thankfulness for all the blessings they'd enjoyed. Handing out cigars today still elicits a feeling of opulence, wealth, and thanksgiving, just as it did during the "potlatch" celebrations of old. Now, we've improved on the tradition by adding "it's a girl" or "it's a boy" wrappers to the birth-announcement cigar. You can personalize these even more by adding details to the labels so they take on the full task of announcing all the details of a new birth. A simple cigar turns into a birth-announcement cigar, ready to be handed out or mailed to friends and relatives worldwide. While you're picking out the perfect cigar for your announcement, consider getting some bubble-gum cigars or chocolate cigars to hand out to the youngsters in your life so they can join in the fun. They come in all flavors and are just as easy to personalize. Whether they are smokers or not, everyone will enjoy being included in this custom and will cherish your thoughtfulness. Here's a great idea: to a long envelope, add a cigar plus a written announcement, and drop in a picture. If you're thinking of holding an open house, use this idea to get the word out. Those that want to could gather outdoors and smoke their cigars towards the sun, as in days of old. Passing out cigars will never go out of style. Join in the fun so you can tell your kids that you kept the tradition alive with this symbol of thankfulness.

So why am I a Penn State Football fan again?

After watching that pathetic excuse of a game against Michigan, I think Ive given up on Penn State football. The coaching staff is absolutely horrible and to be honest I dont think the team could beat Appalachian State. If both Appalachian State and Oregon realized the a stretched O was a key to winning against UM, why didnt Joepa use it? Based on the Buffalo and UM games, I suspect our coaches are the problem, but thats another "question." So tell me why should I bother to follow Penn State football anymore, besides tradition??!!!! Im far from a fair weather fan but the last 6+ years have taken their toll. I can take the losing seasons, I take the tough losses but enough is enough. Im afraid Ill just stop watching them and in time wont care about collegiate football anymore. So why should I bother watching Penn State anymore?
Answer: The 2007 college football season is a third over in most bastions as schools look to wrap up regular-season campaigns by the Thanksgiving holidays if not before. Professional Handicappers League member Jimmy Boyd notes certain characteristics have emerged as clubs move toward the defining month of October and bowl talk transforms into more than mere speculation. Boyd espouses pretty much of a what-you-see-is-what-youre-going-to-get attitude though others look down the road and anticipate a few surprises especially some involving what currently are perceived as upper-echelon Top 25 squads -- though there doesnt appear to be much room for alterations at the very top. USC LSU defending national champion Florida and Oklahoma rule the roost one through four in this weeks USA Today poll although the gambling specific BGS ower Ratings have LSU USC & Oklahoma tied up in the 1 spot with Florida a distant 4th. Most college observers believe the top 4 arent likely to change. An alaphabet soup BCS Championship isnt etched in stone by any means but it might not be too early for sponsors of the New Orleans national championship game to line up Campbells as a major sponsor in anticipation of a meeting between the Trojans and Tigers. Ive said this before and Ill say it again Boyd declared. Its a top-heavy year in college football. The teams at or near the top will remain there all season with very few others making surprise runs. One encounter garnering media attention this weekend is the Friday night Big East affair between No. 5 West Virginia and No. 18 South Florida. Canadian PHL member Steve Zukiel regards it as the weeks most appealing matchup. Im very interested Zukiel said. Wow. Boyd offered similar sentiments. West Virginia-South Florida is a very big game in the Big East he said. The South Florida Bulls won at Auburn to show they could be for real. They ARE the sleeper pick in the Big East. West Virginia is never quite as good on the road. This game either will keep South Floridas hopes of a Big East championship alive or it will keep West Virginias hopes of a national title alive. After the BCS title tilt the Rose Bowl traditionally draws the most interest among holiday bowl offerings. Observers hardily have maligned the Big Ten largely because of early-season woes in Ann Arbor. The current USA Today poll however includes five conference teams among its Top 25: Ohio State Wisconsin Purdue Michigan State and Penn State though Michigan State for example has racked up a 4-0 record against teams such as Notre Dame that pack about as much muscle as Spongebob Squarepants! Five time World Champion Handicapper and Professional Handicappers League Commissioner Brian Gabrielle has four Big Ten teams among the leading 25 and drops Penn State all the way down to 41st. He has Michigan State 25th and Michigan 52nd in contrast Zukiel still regards UM as a Top 5 team. They still can win the Big 10 championship still smell the roses Zukiel said. Gabrielle has Ohio State ranked fifth nationally Wisconsin ninth and Purdue 17th. This The BGS Power Ratings takes everything into account not just the results of one game i.e. Michigan over Penn St but all games against all opponents Gabrielle said. I know Michigan fans are frustrated and looking for something to grab on to but it doesnt help Michigan that Penn State is not a Top 25 team in The BGS Power Ratings so the win really loses luster. East Coast PHL handicapper Bill Fishman still gives the Wolverines a shot at a cherished Big Ten championship. I feel Michigan is still a very talented team and one that should be reckoned with for the Big Ten title Fishman said. Michigan was my top play this week as a dog win over Penn State. Im still not a huge fan of the Big Ten but Ohio State is quick and talented on defense. Boyd believes uncertainty surrounding the Midwest loop traditionally among the countrys strongest could actually prove to be a boon as each game takes on added significance. Theres no doubt the Big Ten is down. he said. Michigan did what it needed to do to stay in the hunt by taking care of business at home against the Lions. That win gets them believing again without a doubt. Wisconsin or Ohio State appears to have the inside track. Right now it looks like its going to be a sloppy ride. I dont see anyone running the table and home field advantage in big matchups will be crucial.
