In this extreme case of child torture do you think there should be a speedy death penalty??
Guilty on all counts
Courtroom erupts in emotion as Lamont Hunter is convicted in the torture death of Trustin Blue
Reaction was swift to the speedy conviction Friday of Lamont Hunter for the sadistic abuse, rape and fatal beating of 3-year-old Trustin Blue last year.
The guilty verdict on charges of aggravated murder, rape and endangering children means the 38-year-old Carthage man could get the death penalty. The sentencing hearing will be next month.
Many of the more than 100 people - police, prosecutors, family and onlookers - who crowded into the Hamilton County Common Pleas courtroom shed tears.
Some cried in grief, dismayed at the conviction.
Hunters mother, Harriet Hunter, burst into tears - showing emotion for the first time during the five-day trial - and buried her head in her daughters shoulder. Then, she fled the courtroom.
Many people followed, their wails echoing in the hall.
Hunters lawyer, Clyde Bennett, slammed his fist on the table, as his client sat stone-faced and quiet next to him.
Others cried out of joy, knowing that Trustins death had been avenged.
Wilma Forte and her daughter, Amber White, the two people who most often cared for the little boy and tried to protect him, smiled through their tears.
Trustins step-grandmother, Loyce Page, gripped her daughter, Stacey Thompson-Cody, in a tight hug that lasted several minutes, tears streaming down both of their faces.
"Trustin is at peace, resting beside God," Page said. "True justice was rendered this afternoon."
She said she wants to see Hunter sentenced to death. "He didnt have any mercy on Trustin," she said.
For Bertha Gow, Trustins great-grandmother, the guilty verdicts brought relief.
"We dont have to worry about him being hurt no more," she said.
Even Cincinnati police homicide detective Jennifer Luke, no stranger to death, said Trustins case touched her.
"In my house we pray at night, Please, God, dont let other kids suffer like Trustin, " said Luke, who was with Trustin in the hospital when he died on Jan. 20, 2006.
Hunter had waived his right to a jury trial and let three judges, Norbert Nadel, Ralph "Ted" Winkler and Alex Triantafilou decide his fate.
Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty, a punishment allowed because Trustin was a child and because the judges found he was killed during a rape; the judges could determine that a life prison term is a more appropriate punishment.
Sentencing is scheduled for July 19.
Bennett said hell now focus on saving Hunters life.
Bennett argued at trial that Hunter did not harm Trustin, that he was baby-sitting his girlfriends son when the toddler fell down the stairs. That fall exacerbated injuries Trustin suffered at the hands of somebody else before Hunter was left alone with him, he argued.
In closing arguments, Bennett stressed there was no physical evidence Hunter raped Trustin or inflicted the fatal head injuries.
But it was Assistant Hamilton County Prosecutor Patrick Dressing who captivated the courtroom Friday.
He summed up testimony by paramedics, police, doctors and the people who most loved Trustin in a compelling narrative about the morning in Jan. 19, 2006, the day the Carthage toddler was found unconscious and barely breathing.
"It was sinister," Dressing said.
Hunter violently raped Trustin with some sort of sharp object, causing Trustin severe pain, Dressing said.
He said Hunter had hurt the child before, once in January 2004 and again in June 2004.
Both times, he used the same excuse as the one he uttered the day Trustin died: He fell down the stairs.
"The defendant needed to silence Trustin because at that point the defendant was doomed," Dressing said. "Trustin was starting to talk about feelings and one prior time Mr. Hunter had hurt him. The only way to prevent detection was to silence Trustin and snuff out his existence."
Dressings co-assistant prosecutor on the case, Seth Tieger, left the judges with one final thought.
"Lamont Hunters motive was that he took sadistic delight out of torturing Trustin Blue," Tieger said. "Look at the photos from 2004, (Trustins) penis was mutilated, not for pleasure, but for pain. He liked to hurt Trustin Blue," Tieger said.
"On Jan. 19, 2006, he finally got his moment," Tieger said. "When (Hunter) went into the basement, a routine torture chamber for Trustin Blue, he thought, Amber and Wilma cant protect you now.
"Thats when the unimaginable happened," he said.
Prosecutors got the death penalty, but he will not be put to death for years..
God works, the attorney Clyde Bennett who represented this monster is now on his way to a federal prison for unrelated charges.
