Is there ANYONE running for president who can really do ANYTHING about the incredible mess the USA is in?
Doesnt there come a point when its simply too late to correct mistakes and the piper must be paid? With another Great Depression? With chaos in our foreign policy? With starvation coming to America as many people can no longer buy food or gasoline? As homelessness increases, even among our war veterans? Has the Bush regime succeeded in destroying all that was America?
Answer: I like a question like yours that gets to the nitty gritty.
It's the best question my freezing fingers are able to schroll down to.
There has to be a day of reckoning eventually.
Things have been going along with nobody wanting to upset the apple cart.
Everything you mentioned is reality.
What was being fed to the masses is distortion and crooked figures.
There may not be a Great Depression again, but for sure, things are getting too pricey based on what the people can earn on jobs.
What appears to be happening is U.S. is heading for a slowdown.
The fear is that we enter a time period of stagflation.
Starvation seems hardly probable given the enoromous ability of the capitalist system to dish out all the junk food anyone could possibly eat or want.
The solution to the crisis of housing being inflated to the stratosphere where everybody is thinking foreclosure or living in tighter space....why not give away all those unsold homes to the veterans and then have all properties reassessed at about 40% lower than what they are today.
Why bother waiting for the prices to keep falling, as the economy tanks along with this?
They are teasing everyone by reducing a home priced at half a million dollars only twenty grand less.
The key to this mess we are now in is if the Federal Reserve under Chairman Ben Bernake, can lower interest rates quick enough so that people may want to take a chance on the stock market again.
So far, he hasn't been capable of getting the desired results so that markets won't panic.
It appears that markets are starting to get shocked, as evidenced by the big drops seen recently in U.S., China and Japan.
Without these three big players in the globalized economy working in sync, all bets are off for a recovery from the pain...soon.
The Bush plan to get money into the hands of taxpayers is not good enough to straighten the mess out.
What is needed is stimulus plans for business to hire and retain workers, instead of rewarding top management with incredible pay packages to the detriment of stockholders and working people.
I am talking about abandoning the Reagan era style of economics, for one that favors working class people who are struggling too much.
Seeing how my plan will not be adopted by any new candidate for office of president, your only recourse is to write to your elected officials and explain that you want true reform for the middle class...not just campaign rhetoric.
That's it, in a nutshell.
If everyone on Yahoo Answers would just write one email or letter to their Congressman, you may see some results...maybe.
It's called professing your righteous indignation on how the powers that be reward the middle class.

What is a political solution to this Economic Crisis?
Last week we just saw Lehman Brothers collapsed and Meryl Lynch bought off on the same day. Today the SEC banned shorts for 3 weeks in hopes of getting companies back together with stronger performances. Now the government is offering trillions of dollars in bailouts to several companies, including the largest AIG.
What kind of policy changes should be taken for this economic crisis? Solid answers only + no empty verbatim "that guys wrong my guyses is right"
Answer: As usual, if the answer seems unattainable, look at the question. The reason why we have the economic crisis, is because of politics. The solution to the economic crisis, is to let the free market fix it. The Government is not the solution, it is the problem. The Government mandated loans to people who could not afford it. This led to a false demand for housing and inflated housing prices. When the cost of living went up, due to gasoline price hikes, we had inflation. There was no corresponding wage increases. There were too many people looking for jobs. Then interest rates went up. People could no longer afford the mortgage payments on their homes. many houses hit the market due to mortgage forclosures.House values went down and houses were no longer worth what people owed on them. The solution would have been to place a business man in charge of fannie and freddie and AIG and let the government get out of the business world entirely. Regulations such as suggestng who gets loans and who doesn't is a recipe for disaster.

Why should we have renewable energy sources?
I am writing an essay and I need the answer to this question I want to write about it but I want to know the reason why we need renewable energy sources so I can state it in my essay.
Answer: Renewable energy are the demand of this age. In past, energy were derived from burning of wood and other biomass sources. And then from coal, natural gas and petroleum products. But as these source of energy unlike wood and biomass products require hundreds and thousands of year to produce, they cannot be replenished and their source is getting depleted at faster rate with rise in population. Thus, energy crisis in future can be predicted even when the world is getting more and more energy dependent if we continue to rely only on the these sources of energy.
Another point is, not every country has got crude oil and coal reserves. Their economy is dependent on other countries as their energy cost can be huge which the other country can manipulate, much like middle east controlling oil - supply and prices which went above $140 per barrel (as of now is above $ 40/barrel). This makes a country less dependent on other country for their energy demand if they can use renewable energy available in their country. Energy from biomass is available everywhere, so is the solar energy(less in high latitude), In the region of higher altitude, wind energy can be harnessed, and energy can be harnessed from ocean, river and other water (larger) bodies and from earth (called Geothermal energy).
Another very important advantage is they are clean source of energy. They don't cause air pollution either while producing energy from them (like energy from coal) or using them (like using gasoline). With the rise of issue of global warming and cutting out green house gas emission, it becomes more and more increasing important to use them instead of more polluting sources of energy.

The Day the Sea Came
For the earth, it was just a twinge. Last Dec. 26, at 7:59 a.m., one part of the planets undersea crust made an abrupt shift beneath another along a 750-mile seam near the island of Sumatra. The tectonic plates had been grating against each other for millenniums, and now the higher of the two was lifted perhaps 60 feet. Do you think a nuclear Iran will bring peace and stability in the Middle East?
I say so, due to the following questions and answers!
Question 1: Which country in the Middle East has the most nuclear weapons?
Answer: Israel.
Question 2: Which country in the Middle East refuses to sign the nuclear non-proliferation treaty and bars international inspections? ?
Answer: Israel.
Answer: Nuclear energy does not have any effect. They probably want to make sure they have nuclear energy in case the U.S. ships cut off their gasoline supplies but that would be the cruelist part of the sanctions I can imagine. Too bad Europe goes along with the US. You'd think that Europe would have changed their mind about financial ties with the US since the US caused the global financial crisis.
I dont see why Iran stays with the treaty with all the humiliation, intimidation and threats they suffer from the U.S. In some way it strengthens their cause to achieve respect and strengthens their determination not to cave in to the formidable military might of the US.

Why, and at what price for oil, does world wide demand decrease?
I remember the gasoline shortages of the 70s. What was the price of oil per barrel then? What price does that equal in todays prices, figuring the inflation rate?
Answer: My link below says that the price of oil per barrel was $38 dollars in 1980 which would mean in todays dollars it has the same purchasing power as $99.07 according to the bureau of labor statistics consumer price index page.
http://www.bls.gov/CPI/
(in the link click inflation calcuator to measure other numeric figures)
But to answer your question, the price of il per barrel in 1970 was $12 according to wikipedia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1973_oil_crisis
In today's prices that would mean $66.44 dollars today.

Why hasnt anyone solved the energy crisis yet?
Why do we even still use gasoline? Because the money-grubbing liberals want us to. Think about it: if we just put a set of magnets on the front of every car, with the one in front being the larger magnet, then cars could pull themselves! Energy crisis solved, and the world is moral once more.
I have a Masters Degree in Physics, and am a theoretical physicist for a living.
Answer: 1. Liberals do not own oil companies. They want to redistribute wealth, not allow it to accumulate.
2. The answer to your question is that it is not currently profitable to solve the "energy crisis". It probably never will be. Other forms of energy are not as efficient as fossil fuels.
3. Your solution would not produce forward momentum.

What is your favorite experience traveling in a foreign country?
Answer: I spent six months studying in Siberia (during the winter!). A companion and I got our passports and visas and rented an apartment in Novosibirsk. We spent a lot of time traveling to a northern city, called Tomsk, where we helped make improvements local orphanages.
The entire experience is too incredible to sum up in Yahoo Answers! I had already studied Russian, but became more conversant. I met new and interesting people who were incredibly deep and compassionate. I learned an entire way of living that was more foreign & different than I ever would have imagined.
I ran outside, (wearing only swimming trunks) when the temperature was -50 Celsius! I found out that most people eat banannas upside-down. I played chess with a 6 year old named Anatoly who kicked my butt every single time we played!
I made a friend who was paid only in Gasoline, due to the economic crisis. He and a friend partnered together to build a gas station- but were stifled because the Russian Mafia threatened to burn it down if they didn't hand over half of their profits.
I experienced tubeworms and roundworms (not very fun). I was yelled at frequently for being an American- I was reported to the police for being a spy (not sure who turned me in, but it was not true) and I sat in a chair answering questions in Russian to a policeman who was pointing an AK-47 at me. I watched the exchange rate go from 6 roubles to the dollar to 27 roubles to the dollar in a period of weeks. I waited in line for bread.

Answer: EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
LAW ENFORCEMENT
I was arrested in Kennebunkport, Maine, in 1976 for driving while
intoxicated. I pled guilty, paid a fine, and had my driver's license
suspended for 30 days. My Texas driving record has been "lost" and is not
available.
MILITARY
I joined the Texas Air National Guard and went AWOL. I refused to take a
drug test or answer any questions about my drug use. By joining the Texas
Air National Guard, I was able to avoid combat duty in Vietnam.
COLLEGE
I graduated from Yale University with a low-C average. I was a cheerleader.
PAST WORK EXPERIENCE
I ran for U.S. Congress and lost. I began my career in the oil business in
Midland, Texas, in 1975. I bought an oil company, but couldn't find any oil
in Texas. The company went bankrupt right after I sold my stock. I bought
the Texas Rangers baseball team in a sweetheart deal that took land using
taxpayer money. With the help of my father and our friends in the oil
industry, including Enron CEO Ken Lay, I was elected governor of Texas.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS GOVERNOR OF TEXAS
I changed Texas pollution laws to favor power and oil companies, making
Texas the most polluted state in the Union. During my tenure, Houston
replaced Los Angeles as the most smog-ridden city in America. I cut taxes
and bankrupted the Texas treasury to the tune of billions in borrowed money.
I set the record for the most executions by any governor in American
history. With help from my Governor-of-Florida-brother, and my father's
appointments to the Supreme Court I became President after losing by over
500,000 votes.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS PRESIDENT
I'm the first U.S. President in history to enter office with a criminal
record. I invaded and occupied two countries at a continuing cost of over a
billion dollars per week. I spent a U.S. surplus and effectively bankrupted
the U.S. Treasury. I shattered the record for the largest annual deficit in
U.S. history. I set an economic record for most private bankruptcies filed
in any 12-month period. I set the all-time record for most foreclosures in a
12-month period. I set the all-time record for the biggest drop in the
history of the U.S. stock market. In my first year in office, over 2 million
Americans lost their jobs and that trend continues every month.
I'm proud that the members of my cabinet are the richest of any
administration in U.S. history. My "poorest millionaire," Condoleeza Rice,
had a Chevron oil tanker named after her. I set the record for most campaign
fund-raising trips by a U.S. President. I am the all-time U.S. and world
record-holder for receiving the most corporate campaign donations. My
largest lifetime campaign contributor, and one of my best friends, Kenneth
Lay, presided over the largest corporate bankruptcy fraud (Enron) in U.S.
History. My political party used Enron private jets and corporate attorneys to
assure my success with the U.S. Supreme Court during my election decision.
I've protected my friends at Enron and Halliburton against investigation or
prosecution. More time and money was spent investigating the Monica Lewinsky
affair than has been spent investigating one of the biggest corporate
rip-offs in U.S. history.
I presided over the biggest energy crisis in history, refusing intervention
when corruption involving the oil industry was revealed. I presided over the
highest gasoline prices in U.S. history. I changed U.S. policy to allow
convicted criminals to be awarded government contracts. I appointed more
convicted criminals to administration than any President in U.S. history. I
created the Ministry of Homeland Security, the largest bureaucracy in the
history of the United States government.
I've broken more international treaties than any U.S. President. I am the
first President in U.S. history to have the United Nations remove the U.S.
from the Human Rights Commission I withdrew the U.S. from the World Court
of Law. I refused to allow inspectors access to U.S. "prisoner of war"
detainees and thereby refused to abide by the Geneva Convention. I'm the
first President in history to refuse U.N. election inspectors (during the
2002 U.S. election). I set the record for fewest numbers of press
conferences of any President since the advent of television. I set an
all-time record for most vacation days in any one-year period. After taking
off the entire month of August, I presided over the worst security failure
in my nation's history. I garnered unprecedented sympathy for the U.S. after
the World Trade Center attacks, and less than a year later made the U.S the
most hated country in the world, possibly the largest failure of diplomacy
in world history. I also set the all-time record for most people worldwide to
simultaneously protest me in public venues (15 million), shattering the
record for protests against any person in the history of mankind.

What do you think about the economic viability of biodiesel production and the profitability of this enterpris
I want to understand more about biodiesel potentialities in the world market to solve the looming problem of the energy crisis in todays world. Please enlighten me furthe on this matter.
Answer: First writer is correct. Another consideration when looking at Bio-Fuels is not just the energy costs, but the Water costs. Here in the Midwest, Water is constantly in shortage. Corn based Ethanol from irrigated land uses 2000 gallons of water just to grow one bushel of corn. And ethanol has LESS energy than gasoline. However, Soybeans that can be made into Bio-Diesel, only need about 300gallons of water per bushel...and Bio-Diesel actually has MORE energy/gallon than straight Diesel.
We can never produce enough Bio Fuels to offset oil imports in any significant way, but they can be used effectively to 'Stretch' our supplies for a while untill we can come up with a suitable alternative.
There is a GREAT article about Ethanol Production in the latest issue of Car and Driver magazine. It will answer alot of your questions about Bio-Fuels in relation to the energy issues today. BTW...There is NO CRISIS!!! Just temporary price spikes due to political instability in the world today.

Seeking Answers on Oil Spill as Questions Mount
Since the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico in April, killing 11 and setting off the biggest maritime oil spill in the nations history, questions about the potential dimensions of the disaster have only multiplied from week to week. Readers have been asking whether the oil can be contained, how serious the damage will be and - Reported by Felicity Barringer, John M. Now that the Election is here how HIGH will the cost of Gasoline go?
A White House document shows that executives from big oil companies met with Vice President Cheneys for an energy task force in 2001 -- it shows that officials from Exxon Mobil Corp., Conoco-Phillips, Shell Oil Co. and BP America Inc. met in the White House complex with the Cheney aides who bargained for a national energy policy, parts of which are now law and parts of which bring prices down in the months before a Federal election.
Senator Barbara Boxer is making rare appearances in Scarborough Country lately, calling attention to what appears on the surface to be profiteering by the major oil companies during a time of national crisis. Sen. Boxer is working on getting big oil executives to come back to Washington to appear before the Senate under oath to answer tough questions about the shortages and other supply problems that have driven gas prices to record highs in the wake of the Iraq War and recent natural disasters.
SCARBOROUGH: And yet Exxon has $39 billion in cash right now in reserves, and they are refusing to build refineries.
BOXER: Thats right.
SCARBOROUGH: Why?
BOXER: Thank you for understanding this, Joe. This is a fact, because I think they want to control the supply. its as just simple as that. You know, Shell Oil had a refinery in Bakersfield. Listen to this. They said, we are shutting it down. It doesnt make money. That wasnt true. They said, we are shutting it down. We cant get a steady supply of crude oil. That wasnt true. They said, we are shutting it down, and theres no buyers. That wasnt true.
It was only because political leaders got together in the state and in the Congress and pressed them that they were forced to sell this refinery, and, by the way, the new buyer is very happy and supplying 2 percent of the gasoline for California. Now, I tried to press that yesterday, and the Shell person said, oh, we are just thrilled that its remained open.
Ahead of US mid-term Congressional elections, politically-sensitive gasoline prices have fallen sharply in recent months.
The fall in prices on Monday came as Opec plans to push through with cuts in crude output. Opec president Edmund Daukoru said member nations of the oil producers cartel were committed to cutting production in a bid to boost prices. He added that further cuts could also be made.
"A December quota cut may be necessary because the market is still soft," Mr Daukoru said on Sunday in South Korea, where he was attending an oil conference.
Despite scepticism over Opecs intentions, some dealers said they expected oil prices to begin reversing after Nov. 7th.
Answer: If the price of gas goes up after the elections the people had better together rise up in a disconsolate frame of mind and bring down those who have betrayed us. We the people had better start standing up over all the weak and useless ways the goverment keeps putting down the people. We must stop being scamed by the gov.

Recession in america looks increasingly likely. Can booming emerging markets save the economy?
I cant seem to find answers to this question on the internet. i already tried breaking it down into different parts but still cant find any good web sites to find answers to this question...
Help please...
Answer: The emerging markets are in Europe and Asia. That will do nothing for the dying labor market in America, or the shrinking dollar..The labor market consists of low end minimum wage employment with little or no benefits.. The drop in the value of the dollar, only make our exports cheaper.. Big Business only benefits from that.. Foreign Countries holding our debt bonds which is funding the wars, as the dollar loses value, may cash our bonds in and invest in the European Markets and Euros( Standard European Currency) A recession is likely, and the government will reduce interest rates in order to encourage the public to spend, however, with the average American holding $2000'00 in credit card debt, some upwards to $10,000.00 the spending spree will come to an end!! The wealthy 10% can't and won't spend to keep the economy rolling..And the income of the middle class is shrinking, due to the losses of jobs across the board.. Unemployment figures released this week , shows unemployment up to 5% a rise from last report!Confidence in the economy is waining, and the crisis in the housing market , which is still a big problem will continue and get worse thru 2008..Energy cost due to the energy policy of the United States or lack there of, will also aggrevate an almost untennable situtation.. Gasoline will reach over $4.00 dollars a gallon, and $5.00 a gallon is not impossible.. When a working person has to spend $50'00 to $100'00 dollars a week for fuel to get to work and home, there will be even less money available for normal basics..Its time for America to pay the piper!!! And Big Business and our government CAUSED this disaster!! SOLOMON

What are some of Barack Obamas legislative accomplishments?
Chris Mathews was interviewing Senator Kirk Watson and asking him what some of Barack Obamas legislative accomplishments are. Senator Watson was unable to answer this question. So what are some of Barack Obamas legislative accomplishments. Here too, Im not looking for answers such as how much he inspires people or what he plans on doing. But has HAS he accomplished legislatively already?
Answer: Obama passed legislation with Republican Senator Jim Talent to give gas stations a tax credit for installing E85 ethanol refueling pumps. The tax credit covers 30 percent of the costs of switching one or more traditional petroleum pumps to E85, which is an 85 percent ethanol/15 percent gasoline blend.
-After a number of inmates on death row were found innocent, Senator Obama worked with law enforcement officials to require the videotaping of interrogations and confessions in all capital cases.
-His first law was passed with Republican Tom Coburn, a measure to rebuild trust in government by allowing every American to go online and see how and where every dime of their tax dollars is spent.
-Obama created the Illinois Earned Income Tax Credit for low-income working families in 2000 and successfully sponsored a measure to make the credit permanent in 2003. The law offered about $105 million in tax relief over three years.

US Natural Gas Prices and the Election | The Energy Collective
To complicate matters further, both of these uncertainties are entangled with the outcome of the US presidential election, and my gas provider wants my answer by next Monday. When I last looked at this question in detail, in 2010, I concluded that the utility's offer was attractive, after scrutinizing then-current gas futures prices and the historical relationship between the futures market and "city gate" prices for Virginia, where I live. Can some please answer these questions about Obama?
1. What is his background, Record, and Platform?
2. What does it cost for him to be elected? What is the opportunity cost if hes elected?
3. When, where and how does Obama make himself available?
4. What are the methods that Obama employs?
Answer: You can find his platform at www.barackobama.com. Here are some of his accomplishments while in the Illinois and U.S. Senate:
-Obama passed legislation with Republican Senator Jim Talent to give gas stations a tax credit for installing E85 ethanol refueling pumps.
-Obama joined forces with former U.S. Sen. Paul Simon (D-IL) to pass the toughest campaign finance law in Illinois history. The legislation banned the personal use of campaign money by Illinois legislators and banned gifts from lobbyists. Before the law was passed, one organization ranked Illinois worst among 50 states for its campaign finance regulations.
-As a member of the Veterans' Affairs Committee, Senator Obama has fought to help Illinois veterans get the disability pay they were promised, while working to prepare the VA for the return of the thousands of veterans who will need care after Iraq and Afghanistan.
-He traveled to Russia with Republican Dick Lugar to begin a new generation of non-proliferation efforts designed to find and secure deadly weapons around the world.
-Obama has been a leading advocate for protecting the right to vote, helping to reauthorize the Voting Rights Act and leading the opposition against discriminatory barriers to voting.
- In the U.S. Senate, Obama introduced the STOP FRAUD Act to increase penalties for mortgage fraud and provide more protections for low-income homebuyers, well before the current subprime crisis began.
-Obama sponsored legislation to combat predatory payday loans, and he also was credited with lobbied the state to more closely regulate some of the most egregious predatory lending practices.
-Barack Obama introduced the Patriot Employer Act of 2007 to provide a tax credit to companies that maintain or increase the number of full-time workers in America relative to those outside the US; maintain their corporate headquarters in America; pay decent wages; prepare workers for retirement; provide health insurance; and support employees who serve in the military.
-Obama worked to pass a number of laws in Illinois and Washington to improve the health of women. His accomplishments include creating a task force on cervical cancer, providing greater access to breast and cervical cancer screenings, and helping improve prenatal and premature birth services.
-Obama has introduced and helped pass bipartisan legislation to limit the abuse of no-bid federal contracts.
-Obama and Senator Feingold (D-WI) took on both parties and proposed ethics legislation that was described as the "gold standard" for reform. It was because of their leadership that ending subsidized corporate jet travel, mandating disclosure of lobbyists' bundling of contributions, and enacting strong new restrictions of lobbyist-sponsored trips became part of the final ethics bill that was signed into law.
For the time being, Obama usually makes himself available at campaign events and interviews. You could probably make an appointment with him if necessary.
For the campaign, the methods that he is employing is to increase voter turnout among the middle and lower class. He is doing this by having his campaign volunteers register as many non-registered people as possible.
Obama has also taken the strategy of staying on the subject of issues such as the economy, environment, and employment rather than reverting to the usual habit of mudslinging to which political candidates resort. Of course, his campaign has strayed from this path once or twice, but he has more or less stayed on message, as the issues are what separates him from the Bush administration and are a definite advantage to helping Obama get elected.
Obama has also targeted key states that are potential swing states and set up extra offices there. For example, here in Virginia, Obama has set up almost 50 campaign offices, compared to the four offices set up by John Kerry in 2004. It has paid off. As of this posting, most polls say Obama is ahead in Virginia by as much as 9 percentage points.

Question about more fuel efficient cars?
Cars have changed a lot. There are now Hybrids and electric cars. What is a important factor that caused these changes in the car industry? Is it polution and peak oil? Any others?
Answer: There is a convergence of need with capability. In the last several decades electronic devices have been getting smaller and powering those devices has spawned a battery industry and supporting electronics. GM had an interest in solar powered vehicles that lead a research team to win a solar car challenge. This led directly to the development of the "Impact" a prototype battery electric car.
Meanwhile the California Air Resources Board (CARB) which predates the founding of the EPA by 3 years, was searching for ways to reduce air pollution in California. Seeing that the Impact was an already existing zero emissions car. They created the Zero Emissions Vehicle mandate (ZEV) in the early 90's. This called for automakers to sell a limited number of zero emissions vehicles as a small percentage of their total business if they did business in California. This then led directly to the development and lease of the EV1, RAVev, Ford Ranger ev, the S10 electric pick up and the Honda EV+. Of these only the EV1 was built as an electric car from the ground up as it was based on the Impact and not a gasoline powered car.
These early EV's needed a battery and there was a good one. The nickel metal hydride (NM-HI) developed by the Ovonics corporation: http://www.evuk.co.uk/hotwires/rawstuff/art24.html But Ovanics sold the rights to the battery to GM who among others brought a lawsuit against CARB to crush the ZEV and then they recalled and crushed the EV1 cars. This was made infamous in the movie "Who Killed the Electric Car" GM then sold the battery rights to Texaco. Six days later they were bought out by Chevron who brought suit to keep the NM-HI batteries out of electric vehicles. They agreed however to allow the batteries with a smaller format in vehicles that still had a gasoline engine and the hybrid was born. Almost every existing hybrid vehicle uses NM-HI Batteries (see mine at: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Aqv4NfsX53ue3XBanRpLzAv95nNG;_ylv=3?qid=20100304052536AAMz5Az for a list of hybrid cars that use NM-HI batteries) For whatever reason Chevron consistently refused to license them in a format sufficient for a purely electric vehicle.
There was a lot of talk about peak oil in 2004 - 2008, When speculation caused the oil price to rise dramatically gasoline prices skyrocketed. This produced two effects that have affected electric vehicles. The price of gas created even more of an interest in electric vehicles. It also precipitated an economic collapse as people on the financial edge with cheap credit could no longer afford their energy bills. That collapse has stimulated legislative reaction and resulting development funds for alternative energy including electric vehicles.
You can expect that the current credit economic crisis will limit electric car production but research and development will continue. It may also eliminate some dead wood in the automotive industry and create spaces for eventual new development. By mid decade some solid technological advances may also begin to reach consumers.

WHO DETERMINES THE PRICE OF GASOLiNE?
Does the government have something to do with it? What can we do (boycott oil or something ) to keep gas prices down. I dont drive, but I realize that gas prices have an effect in everything.
I need serious answers people.
Consumers have some effect on the price, but is there an outside influence the government? What Im asking is- Bush is an oil man. Did he have anything to do with the price of gas.
Answer: You want to understand who determines the price of gasoline, read my A to this other related Q: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AhuNT6bXD3gWpPddhE6qqjbsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20080525063131AAP3pnN&show=7#profile-info-f1c556754a076683e4aa4d1f4211d67baa
Pls read it, indicate you read it and then I will post another Q which I answered before that one. Don't believe the people who post absolute nonsense! Many who post here have no knowledge of what happens between the wellheads and the retail pump handle!. Also some participants make a living working for the oilco's and they certainly don't want to spoil a good thing.
Something really really bad happened to the whole world when long term energy contracts came to an end and everyone went to spot pricing aka "just in time" purchasing with spot prices! It all started back in 1974 w/the formation of the oil cartel composed of OPEC and the oilco's who still had substantial oil production in the US, North Sea and some other places even though their properties and oil-producing assets were coniscated within the OPEC countries!
I sent the following Q to one of the smart participants here: This is the fully-worded Q which didn't fit the Q-box: Will the oil &/or economic experts here posting A's on the topic please explain WHY everyone is spot & long-term contracts for all commodities are a thing of the past? And please tell us how exactly you know this? Was it from an economic textbook ,a business school case you studied or was/is it real world job experience refining or trading oil with OPEC?
Then I compressed it and posted it in case others want a shot at my Q!
BTW, did you hear that the only Asian member of OPEC, the nation of Indonesia has decided today 05282008 to drop out of the cartel! (Google "OPEC minus 1" Why are they leaving OPEC? TWO because they want to be nice guys? No!, because A)they are about to become net oil importers from other greedy OPEC members. B)they need the oilco's they kicked out long ago to come back in and find new oil fields or rework the old oilfields whose production has declined for normal reasons like depletion but also bec of their incompetence! It means also that the 600 million Indonesians are also like China and India now joining the economic development parade and they need the oil they produce for themselves. Nobody wants to depend on greedy suppliers including them since they as members of the cartel know how the other members think! BY the way your Gov't also knows--that is why they created anf have filled the SPR(Strategic Petroleum Reserve) in Texas and Louisiana!
As to Bush43 and Cheney, their refusal to use the SPR is an indication of how they as members of the oil patch can't seem to do something that they are empowered to do to help lower the pressure on prices. Remember they were close friend's of Ken Lay, the CEO of Enron which tried to milk the electricity crisis in California. Ken Lay died after he was convicted before he was sentenced so his conviction was vacated and his wife got to keep what was left of his estate from the sale of Enron stock while he lied to the stockholders, the employees and the public! At least that was what I remember reading. Enron knew the crunch was coming and so did other oilco's and they were planning to take advantage of it in oil, fresh water and broadband services. There's the connection you seek! use google to follow the trail!
