Hunted The Letter …Nightmare… a simple word, but for me it is anything but simple. To many all it is is a bad dream sometimes terrifyingly realistic but still just a bad dream. My nightmares however, are very real. I’m not a normal human being and my life for sure is not normal. For me life is a nightmare, survival though is a game… I’m losing. In a world fraught with danger it is a miracle I’ haven’t lost already. I find it unbelievable that one man can become so oblivious to all the dangers of world. All it takes to become this oblivious is the comfort of a home. However do not be fooled it is not just one man who is oblivious every one who has a comfortable in a home is that unaware of their surroundings. Once I found a place I thought I could call home, I was wrong. I have no home and never will. Now I’m on the road again. Things have not been going so well for me. I have to scramble to get from one place to another. Every thing in life seems twisted and contorted life is trying to confuse me, some cruel mockery of my own existence. My memories of my past are vague and far scattered at best, but I remember that sometime after I was born. My parents got into a tangle with some quick talking cowboy and next I know there was an explosion of voices. It seemed like everything began to dissolve at once. I never find out what happened next I always wake up from the nightmare after that. Like I said before my nightmares are very real. There is no denying it. I long to my past maybe then I’ll know why I’m hunted. By now you’re probably thinking what’s the big deal it’s not like I committed a crime, but I have. Every night I dream of people having tragic accident. For example a man and woman car slides off a cliff or someone drowns. When I wake I find out that someone truly has suffered that accident. My dream of my parents is the only one that doesn’t come true the next morning but I fear that is because it has already happened. At night some might say I’m the hunter but if you ask me I’m the victim. It is a heavy burden to know that when you fall asleep and dream someone suffers a tragic accident. I must end my story here for the hunters are coming they have almost caught me. I write this letter as a warning. Our world is not a safe place to live on; humans are not always kind to one another. I may not be a human but even I know that. Watch you step, guard your back, and most importantly never let your guard down so when the hunter strikes you are ready. I hope that someone finds. For it could be mankind’s savior.… Some one did find the letter but no one cared, until it was too late. too be continued. Answer: i really LLOOOVVEEE it!! my advice, tho, is to lighten it up a little. its kinda wordy, even tho all the words are beautifully written ( i really mean it!) but theres no action, just talk talk talk and it got a tad boring for that reason only. you are sooo good esp. for a 6th grader!

Can you comment on the 1st paragraph of my novel?

Our AP English assignment is to write the first 3 pages of a novel. I just finished the 1st paragraph, and want some input. It took like an hour. Do you like it? I sat atop the towering cliff as I gazed upon the shadow-engulfed lake. I was engaged in a relaxed mindset that was to remain uninterrupted. The sound of the water crashing against the rocks reminded me of my days in Seattle. It took me back to the days when I would frantically trot out of Pikes Place while opening my umbrella under the freezing rain. It was the entirety of the dreary Seattle lifestyle that I missed. If he had not tempted me with his false treasures, I would never have ventured beyond the boundaries of my comfort zone; I would still be standing under the Seattle rain. Its awful. You can admit it if youd like. This is a HUGE project (60% of our grade) and Im kind of freaking out. I need comments.
Answer: Well, first let me say that your teacher is a bozo for having something like this count for 60% of your grade. Unfortunately, though, you have to make do with the hand you've been dealt, so..... I think you're making the mistake of so many smart young writers (esp. if they're writing for a grade), namely that somehow things must be overwritten to show a certain level of sophistication in vocabulary, structure, etc. But look at what you've written. It sounds on the one hand as if it's supposed to be modern America and on the other as if it's Victorian (e.g., 2nd, 5th, first part of 6th). Of course, maybe there's something about the speaker that makes her character a bit odd in that way, but I still don't see her as credible if she's THAT odd. Often reading what you've written out loud immediately tells you whether or not it rings true. Different writers work in different ways. Maybe you're more suited to outlining everything first and then going from there. At least with a basic map showing you where you're going, you probably won't freak out as much and can at least focus at this point on producing pages more than producing quality. And that IS the important thing for you right now. Start over, but try to make the voice consistent. Really picture who's saying these things and why s/he's saying them. When you do that, you don't even have to be quite as explicit in your exposition. In a novel you have time and room for suggestion, for a steady building-up of exposition and such, so I think it would be better if, by the end of your 3 pgs, the reader's curiosity is fiercely piqued and nothing much else. That's the sort of thing that makes any reader just HAVE to turn the next page. Think more about where the focus of each sentence really lies. Here's one attempt to "refocus" the sentences: ---------------- Sitting on top of a thousand feet of cliff I couldn't seem to help sustaining a mind without worry or much else. Besides, I was virtually hypnotized by the lake far below and the shadows engulfing it. But I noticed a sound beginning to interrupt my idyll. The lakewater crashing against rocks took me back to Seattle, to all those days when I scrambled out of Pikes' Place as the rain froze everything and I fumbled to get my umbrella up. It wasn't just THAT I missed, though; it was the whole dreamy dreary Seattle lifestyle. If [Sam] hadn't tempted me [east/south/north/etc] with all his pyrite promises and treasures, I never would have left my comfort zone, my little branch of the mine where I knew my canary would always be alive. I'd still be standing or walking or sleeping under that constant Seattle rain. ---------- Things you'll want to emphasize most---fact, feeling, metaphor, etc.---should be at the end of the sentence. You could even say you NEED to stress them most, since usually they'll be the things that help the reader connect to what's next. You can also convey a lot with line length and rhythm. And, as a general rule, if you see an adverb, you probably need an adjective or verb that's more precise and/or vivid. Then you can get rid of things like "frantically trot," esp. since the image of "trot" (like a trotting horse) doesn't jibe with being frantic. I could say more (couldn't we all?). For now, don't think about possible evaluations from your teacher or Yahoo Answers folk or even you yourself. Stay away from all critics until you have a reasonably well-finished piece. A suggested process: (1) Try to write in the morning. Your mind will often be up for a creative jag as soon as you get up. After working on your writing, you'll have a sense of accomplishment for the rest of the day. Your mind will also be primed for the rest of the day to think about your work. Ideas will come more often. (2) If you get stuck, push yourself for ~15 mins or more to go farther. (When writing is good, it's usually exhausting.) If still stuck, then you can go back over what you've written, which may give you ideas about what to do next. (3) If that doesn't work, go ahead and edit what you've written and then type it up or write it out so it's nice and clean. Set it aside, go to bed that night, and work on it first thing in the morning, but without editing. If you follow this pattern (more or less), I think the results will surprise you. Just some ideas.... All the best!
