Where is the best place around Bay area to go for a family with little kids?
I have 2 little lids, one 5 and one 7. I want to take them to a short vacation around bay area since I dont have long vacation, only general 4 days during Christmas. Where is the good place to go for fun?
Thanks for the suggestion?
Answer: So many choices! Here's a few of my favorites!
In SF, there's the Exploratorium. It's a hands-on science museum, where they get to play with all kinds of fascinating toys...There's a room called the "Shadow Box", where the walls are photosensitive, and will leave an image of your shadow on the walls every few minutes. There are exhibits in sound, sight, gravity, DNA, just about anything you can think of...And all of it is intended to be interactive. It has been one of my favorite places to visit for about 30 years now!
San Francisco also has a great zoo, right in Golden Gate Park.
If your kids were a little older, I'd suggest the trip to Alcatraz, but it's probably oriented toward folks a little older.
A little farther south, but still in the area, is the Children's Discovery Museum of San Jose. As the name states, it's a museum that is specifically oriented toward kids. Lots and lots of fun here, including an IMax theater!
If you're in San Jose, and the weather is nice, I'd recommend Happy Hollow, at Kelley Park. I have many, many, fond memories of playing at this park!
If you're up for going even farther south, there's the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, or Bonfante Gardens (in Gilroy). The Boardwalk is good family fun, right on the beach. Bonfante Gardens is a small theme park, which is very much focused on families with small children (I have never seen so many strollers in one place in my life!).

family of 4 (mom dad, 4 & 2 year old) going to disney world for a week..?
we have the dining plan..how much pocket money do i need to bring? thanks
Answer: There are several dining plans available, so depending on the one you choose will determine how much additional money you will need.
My wife and I just returned from Disney World and had the dining plan that featured two quick service meals (plus snacks) per day. We chose the quick service meals because I don't like to be committed to reservations while on vacation. There is so much food that was included, we decided to split two of our meals and eat one complete meal every day. This way we could eat breakfast, lunch and dinner.
When using one of the meals for breakfast you are entitled to your entre and two beverages. If you use your meal for lunch or supper, you are entitled to a beverage, entre and desert.
Disney defines a snack as almost everything around $4.50 and under (that's almost every snack they sell). This can include, large pretzles, churos, bakery, ice cream cone, ice cream bars, fruit, chips, pop corn, cookies, muffins, water, soft drinks and bottled juices. We were gone February 16-25 and the weather averaged in the 70's so we didn't use a lot of snacks as fluids. At the end of our stay we had ten snacks left over and used them at our hotel to bring home microwave popcorn.
The entre's include your main food and a side. For example breakfast can include an omlet and potato wedges, lunch can include a burger and fries or apple slices, dinner can include three slices of turkey, mashed potatos and vegetable. Don't forget to add desert to lunch and dinner meals.
Here are some suggestions:
EPCOT... China, Orange Chicken and get the Carmel Ginger Ice Cream.
France, Bakery has a "to die for" Napolean.
England, Fish and Chips
DOWNTOWN DISNEY... Wolfgang Puck's Quick Service Restaurant is on the list. Located to the right of Disney's Christmas Store, it features excellent food, breakfast too!
MAGIC KINGDOM... Main Street USA, Ice Cream Shop, it's the last building on the right just before the castle. Long lines during the evening.
Suggestion regarding strollers:
You will need a stroller as your kids will not be able to walk everywhere. Disney rents strollers, however you have to do it every day and the strollers can't be taken out of the parks. I would suggest your buying two (yes two) strollers, one for each child. Get the kind that have the cloth back and umbrella shaped handles. It is much easier pushing one child then two. Not only is it lighter, it isn't as difficult pushing through the crouds, stores and attractions. If flying, don't check them as luggage, rather put an id tag (provided by airline) on them and let them at the end of the jet bridge just before you get into the plane. Don't forget to pick them up after exiting the plane in the same place (ask airline personel for help).
At Magic Kingdom, view the ELECTROMAGIC parade on a night when it is early, 7:00 PM and stay for WISHES (fireworks) at 8:00 pm. Stand in the middle of Main Street USA near the Ice Cream Shop (sound is great and you can view the entire castle/sky area). Watch for Tinker who flies down from the castle.
With the meal plan we had, we didn't spend anything else on food. Take money for souvinirs and let the kids pick out something they like. Souvinirs or packages can be sent to your hotel if you are staying at one of the Disney properties. Purchase the picture package that allows Disney photographers to take your photo ($100). You can have images or books made from those images... check into it. Allow time for the kids to sleep. And most of all HAVE FUN and go back in 3-5 years.

Is Los Angeles California as great as it seems on TV?
I see many images of happy people with small dogs and fast cars. makes me want to move across country to this seemingly "liberal, exciting, accepting" place with great weather 90% of the time. but is Hollywood really all it is portrayed as?
Answer: In a word, no.
For a number of reasons, we get a bunch of questions asking what it’s like in LA in order to move here.
First of all, I'll tell you what it's NOT like: It's not like anything on TV. There aren’t running gun battles in the street. There aren’t shootouts every day. Also, you don’t see celebrities just walking down the street. We don't go surfing during lunch hour. Some parts of LA are really nice, others are “ghetto”.
LA doesn’t have an effective public transportation like New York or San Francisco. One reason is that LA is larger in area than either of those, without a central hub where everything is. Back in the 1960’s, we might have done it. But by the time local governments got their act together, it was much more difficult to make a working public transit system. Also, unlike NY, we have earthquakes, which makes it a little more difficult to built underground.
You NEED a car to live in Southern California. Deal with it.
The freeway traffic in LA is probably the worst thing about living here. The 405 is the worst. Know why they call it the 405? Because you go 4 o' 5 miles per hour, and it takes 4 o' 5 hours to get where you're going. Freeway Traffic is bad from 6-10 AM and bad from 3-7 PM. I don't know why they call it rush hour. It's more than an hour, and nobody's rushing, that's for sure.
The gangs in LA are the cause of many rumors. Keep in mind that there are gangs in any large town, in every part of the country. In LA, the gangs aren't really downtown, they are in South LA, East LA, and north Long Beach (an extension of the South LA gangs, actually). And here's the deal: Mostly, they just kill each other.
Gas is expensive in California. Currently, it's about $3.20, on average.
Yes, gas and real estate are very expensive in SoCal. However, this would be the best time to BUY a house because it's a buyer's market right now. There are a lot of foreclosures, and too many houses on the market. So if you have cash, it's a great time to buy. Unfortunately, most of us don't have a half-mil just lying around. Perhaps Paris Hilton (regular poster here)?
Yep, freeways are a drag, it's smoggy in summer, and expensive to live here. Yet, if it's so bad, why do we have thousands and thousands of people moving here?
Weather
Activities
Weather
Plenty of jobs
Weather
Beaches, mountains, deserts all within driving distance
Weather!
Here's my final point on the weather. In colder parts of the country, people keep their cars in their garages all winter. Kids get snow toys for Christmas. Here, kids get BIKES, scooters, and skateboards. 10 AM Christmas morning, the streets are FULL of kids on their new bikes, scooters, etc. We have a play set from Costco in the back yard. I installed a light in the yard and our youngest plays on it (sometimes with friends) at night during the “winter”, from the time homework and dinner are done until bed time. You can't do THAT in the snow.
The job market is good here, mainly because there are SO many people here that it creates its own job market. Then there are MANY industries, including tourism, entertainment, shipping, manufacturing, etc. It’s an incredible economy.
However, LA is not for everyone. Every time someone posts this question, you get the LA haters who post their bile and venom. A lot of them don’t know what they are talking about. Maybe they had cousin Ernie visit once, and he was plumb disappointed when he got to Hollywood and found it weren’t pretty like on TV. Of course, he told all his kinfolk, and now they’re LA experts. Some of them are people who actually visited once, and found out it wasn’t like it was on TV, and it certainly wasn’t Mayberry. And some actually lived here, and couldn’t deal with the expense, the traffic, or the rather impersonal nature of living in a large metropolis. (You know, the kind who like to drop in on their neighbors unannounced, open the (unlocked) door, and let themselves in. Well, it’s not like that here, for better or worse. To those I would say “good luck” to you wherever you are, but please don’t spew your venom in this forum.
In a nutshell, LA a HUGE metropolis. I live in one of the nicer suburbs, but the commute is no fun, often 1-2 hours each way each day. However, 340+ days of sunshine really helps. Yeah, it's expensive. Mrs. Obviousman and I both have to work to pay the mortgage. But is it worth it? You bet!
In regards to being accepting, SoCal is THE place. You can be whatever you want here.

Whats your summary on the battle of Trenton?
Answer: The Battle of Trenton took place on December 26, 1776 during the American Revolutionary War. General George Washington led the main Continental Army across the Delaware to surprise and virtually eliminate the Hessian garrison at Trenton, New Jersey. This overwhelming victory helped to preserve the Continental Army and set the stage for the Battle of Princeton the following week.
Trenton was garrisoned by three regiments of the Hessian mercenaries, commanded by Colonel Johann Rall for a total of about 1,200 men. Washington's force of about 2,400 attacked in two columns: Major General Nathanael Greene's division from the north, and Major General John Sullivan's division from the west. A third division never made it across the river due to the weather, but was supposed to attack from the south.
The troops left camp at 2:00 PM on Christmas Day. The river crossing was to be completed by midnight, but the storm which broke at 11:00 PM delayed this completion until 3:00 AM. The predawn attack was therefore delayed due to the weather and the fighting began around 8:00 AM. By 9:30 the Patriots had won.
The American forces had only a handful of wounded (although two men froze to death on the march), while the Hessians lost 106 dead and wounded with at least 600 captured. Colonel Rall was mortally wounded and died the same day. The Rall and Lossburg regiments were effectively removed from the British forces. Parts of the von Knyphausen regiment escaped to the south, but Sullivan did capture some men, along with the regiments cannons and supplies.
By noon, Washington's force had recrossed the Delaware back into Pennsylvania, taking their prisoners and captured supplies with them. This battle gave the Continental Congress a new confidence in that it proved American forces could defeat regulars. It also increased the re-enlistments in the Continental Army forces.
An interesting note is that while only four Americans received light wounds, all of these came during the rush to capture the Hessian artillery park, preventing the guns from being used. Two of these were officers: William Washington (the General's cousin) and young Lietunant James Monroe, the future President of the United States.
The moments before the battle served as the inspiration for the famous painting Washington Crossing the Delaware. The image in the painting, in which Washington stands majestic in his boat as it is crossing the river, is almost certainly fictional, as the waters of the river were icy and treacherous and the flag Washington holds was not created until six months after the battle. Washington, as with all of his troops, most likely stayed low in the boat to provide cover and protection. Nonetheless, the image has become an icon of American history.

Is Christmas in Texas different from Christmas in the Northeast?
Im from the Northeast. To me, Christmas means cold weather, snow, chestnuts roasting by the fire, etc. The songs I hear reflect this, and the decorations do too.
Obviously its a great deal warmer in Texas. How does this affect how Christmas is regarded? Is Santa pictured as someone with warmer clothes? Do songs and decorations reflect the warmer climate?
Answer: It gets colder here. I live in deeep south Texas, so we usually have only two seasons, hot and cold. It was a real shocker when it snowed here last year. The snow lasted all night and for a few hours the next day.
But otherwise, people here bundle up in the winter months and christmas celebrations start from the ending of the dia de los muertos, on Nov 1st. People here are used to having hot weather so when the temprature drops below 60 they start freezing!
People have already have halloween lights ups and they will exchange those for christmas lights in november.
Thanksgiving here become part of the christmas holiday.
Why I am unsure, I was brought up in southern california.!
Some decorations look like chilies, and thing people are used to here, but few choose these. Most go for the typical 'traditional' decor.
Now most celebrate santa claus as well as the traditional mexican holidays.
Songs reflecting the climate or area? No not really, unless you celebrate the mexican holidays Like the Day of the Dead, and the Posadas... (translated Inns.) In mexico people didn't celebrate santa claus, the had big pinatas that looked like the star that followed christ and did a procession of sorts. The procession is a reenactment of the travels by Maria and Jose looking for the place to give birth to christ child. People would get together and set up a map of whos houses people would visit.
As they went all were to turn away mary and joseph, til the 'couple' reached the (agreed upon) Inn (house) where they would gain entrance and safty from the night. At this house the major celebration starts. First they start off with a prayer and several songs of 'safe arival' (Albergue in spanish). Then they belss the home that has graciously recieved the christ child and place a small image of a baby jesus under the christmas tree (the christmass tree being a new addition to this celebration- before hand they had nativity scenes only). After the Holy acts, the party goes on as any normal party. Plenty of drinking and eating and talking sometimes some dancing. All of this part dempends on the wealth of they people in the celebration, the richer they are the fancier the party.
I hope this helps!?

(two questions) one :What traditional and Modern food preparations are used in Greece?
& two: what time do people eat in greece? (breakfast, lunch & dinner)
Answer: Easter preparations begin on Holy Thursday when the traditional Easter bread, tsoureki, is baked, and eggs are dyed red (red is the color of life as well as a representation of the blood of Christ). From ancient times, the egg has been a symbol of the renewal of life, and the message of the red eggs is victory over death. (More on the history of red eggs at Easter.)
In times gone by, superstitions grew into customs that included placing the first-dyed red egg at the home's iconostasis (place where icons are displayed) to ward off evil, and marking the heads and backs of small lambs with the red dye to protect them.
Holy Thursday evening, church services include a symbolic representation of the crucifixion, and the period of mourning begins. In many villages - and in cities as well - women will sit in church throughout the night, in traditional mourning.
Holy (or Great) Friday
The holiest day of Holy Week is Holy Friday. It is a day of mourning, not of work (including cooking). It is also the only day during the year when the Divine Liturgy is not read. Flags are hung at half-mast and church bells ring all day in a slow mournful tone.
Many devout do not cook on Holy Friday, but if they do, traditional foods are simple, perhaps boiled in water (no oil) and seasoned with vinegar - like beans - or thin soups like tahinosoupa, a soup made with tahini.
Traditionally, women and children take flowers to the church to decorate the Epitaphio (the symbolic bier of Christ). The Service of Lamentation mourns the death of Christ and the bier, decorated lavishly with flowers and bearing the image of Christ, is carried on the shoulders of the faithful in a procession through the community to the cemetery, and back. Members of the congregation follow, carrying candles.
Holy (or Great) Saturday
On Holy Saturday, the Eternal Flame is brought to Greece by military jet, and is distributed to waiting Priests who carry it to their local churches. The event is always televised and if there's a threat of bad weather or a delay, the entire country agonizes until the flame arrives safely.
On the morning of Holy Saturday, preparations begin for the next day’s Easter feast. Dishes that can be prepared in advance are made, and the traditional mayiritsa soup is prepared, which will be eaten after the midnight service, to break the fast.
The midnight Service of the Resurrection is an occasion attended by everyone who is able, including children, each holding a white candle.
Special candles made for Easter are called “labatha” (lah-BAH-thah) and are often given as gifts to children from their parents or God-parents. These candles can be lavishly decorated with favorite children’s heroes or storybook characters, and may be as much as three feet tall, but the candle itself is usually white. These candles are only used for one Easter midnight service.
For the Greek mother or wife, Christmas is a very busy time in the kitchen. Almost one week before Christmas, in every Greek house, you can smell the cloves, cinnamon and baked almonds from the Kourambiedes and Melomakarona- the famous Greek Christmas cookies . Big trays with Kourambies, Melomakarona, Nuts, Oranges and Mandarins are part of the Christmas decoration of a Greek living room.
We usually dont eat a good breakfast, only a coffee when we wake up
at 1:30-3:00pm we eat lunch usually beacause this is the time that we get off work and dinner around 8:00 pm
but in general we eat whenever we feel hungry lol.....!~

what is the connection between Santa and coca cola?
Answer: Coca-Cola® and Santa Claus
Most people can agree on what Santa Claus looks like -- jolly, with a red suit and a white beard. But he did not always look that way, and Coca-Cola® advertising actually helped shape this modern-day image of Santa.
2006 marks the 75th anniversary of the famous Coca-Cola Santa Claus. Starting in 1931, magazine ads for Coca-Cola featured St. Nick as a kind, jolly man in a red suit. Because magazines were so widely viewed, and because this image of Santa appeared for more than three decades, the image of Santa most people have today is largely based on cokes advertising.
Before the 1931 introduction of the Coca-Cola Santa Claus created by artist Haddon Sundblom, the image of Santa ranged from big to small and fat to tall. Santa even appeared as an elf and looked a bit spooky.
Through the centuries, Santa Claus has been depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to an elf. He has worn a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. The modern-day Santa Claus is a combination of a number of the stories from a variety of countries.
The Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862; Santa was shown as a small elf-like figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years and along the way changed the color of his coat from tan to the now traditional red. Though some people believe the Coca-Cola Santa wears red because that is the Coke® color, the red suit comes from Nast’s interpretation of St. Nick.
The Coca-Cola Company began its Christmas advertising in the 1920s with shopping-related ads in magazines like The Saturday Evening Post. The first Santa ads used a strict-looking Claus, in the vein of Thomas Nast.
At this time, many people thought of Coca-Cola as a drink only for warm weather. The Coca-Cola Company began a campaign to remind people that Coca-Cola was a great choice in any month. This began with the 1922 slogan "Thirst Knows No Season," and continued with a campaign connecting a true icon of winter -- Santa Claus -- with the beverage.
In 1930, artist Fred Mizen painted a department store Santa in a crowd drinking a bottle of Coke. The ad featured the world's largest soda fountain, which was located in the department store of Famous Barr Co. in St. Louis, Mo. Mizen's painting was used in print ads that Christmas season, appearing in The Saturday Evening Post in December 1930.
1936 Coca-Cola Santa cardboard store displayArchie Lee, the D’Arcy Advertising Agency executive working with The Coca-Cola Company, wanted the next campaign to show a wholesome Santa as both realistic and symbolic. In 1931, The Coca-Cola Company commissioned Michigan-born illustrator Haddon Sundblom to develop advertising images using Santa Claus -- showing Santa himself, not a man dressed as Santa, as Mizen’s work had portrayed him.
1942 original oil painting - 'They Remembered Me'For inspiration, Sundblom turned to Clement Clark Moore's 1822 poem "A Visit From St. Nicholas" (commonly called "'Twas the Night Before Christmas"). Moore's description of St. Nick led to an image of Santa that was warm, friendly, pleasantly plump and human. For the next 33 years, Sundblom painted portraits of Santa that helped to create the modern image of Santa -- an interpretation that today lives on in the minds of people of all ages, all over the world.
The first Coca-Cola Santa Claus image created by artist Haddon Sunblom appeared in 1931 in The Saturday Evening Post. From 1931 to 1964, Coca-Cola advertising showed Santa delivering (and playing!) with toys, pausing to read a letter and enjoy a Coke, playing with children who stayed up to greet him and raiding the refrigerators at a number of homes. The original oil paintings Sundblom created were adapted for Coca-Cola advertising in magazines, store displays, billboards, posters, calendars and even plush dolls. Many of those items today are popular collectibles.

What is it like in Calgary, Alberta, Canada?
Ive been reading old questions about Calgary to see if I could find info that Ive been curious about. But, I cant find exacly what Im aiming for. So, I was wondering how Calgary is.
Whats the weather like (Do they get snow? I live in Vermont, and we pretty much have snow half the year. So if it gets no snow Id be happy XP But, if it gets some, itd be better then Vermonts, haha)
Is it a safe place to live/be?
How is the College? Because Ive been thinking about going to College in Canada, and Calgary has caught my interest.
Any info would be awesome! :D
Thank you so much ♥
Answer: About Calgary.
It is a pretty city and a fairly safe city. Actually by most standards a very safe city. It is close to the mountains and you get a good view of them from various parts of the city. They are only a couple of hours away by car to skiing in Banff.
Going east two hours puts you into a dark sky area for watching the stars at night. The Bow river that runs through the city is a famous trout fishing river and to the south-west of the city there are large areas in the foothills of the Rockies open to public camping. (no fees yet)
They have a very well respected University. The population is generally younger, and there is a fair bit of cultural stuff going on.
At this time they are in the middle of boom times so there is a lot of construction going on and housing is a bit harder to find, but if you have a pulse you have a job. They have a great public transit system.
They get some flooding from the river in the spring sometimes, they get some weird weather at times. Yes they get snow. They can have extremes of cold in the winter or they can get Chinooks blowing out of the mountains where the snow all melts and people are walking around in shorts in January. 2 years ago it was something like 22 degrees on Christmas day
I have two nieces living there with their families.
I highly recommend you consider Calgary as a place to study and live. If you search you will find they have good promotional pages on the internet and you should be able to find images in Google image search or on Flickr.
I like the city quite well, but I live in Edmonton.
The only thing I can think of to say bad about Calgary is that they have way to many cars. It works out to something like 2 for each person.

why such a difference in weather predictions?
Why is there such a difference in the weather preditions? If I go on one website for exmaple the BBC I get a completly different weather report on metoffice, or weather.com or anything. All different. Its crazy. How do we know which one to believe, and do they get the reports different ways?
Answer: Mainly this is due to the method used to predict our rather unpredictable weather here in UK.
The simplest method is to check the wind direction - this usually and quite accurately forecasts what is to come.
WINTER WINDS
Wind direction from the North = cold to very cold often with snow, esp in the Scottish Highlands and the North of England
Wind direction from the North East = (Siberian wind) very cold, almost always snow in Scotland, Northern and Eastern England. If this wind persists for about five days plus, the entire Island of Britain can be covered in snow and stay like that until the wind comes about from another direction.
Wind direction from the East = Nord Zee - Dutch and German weather - cold and icy blast often leading to snowfall esp in North Kent and the Eastern coast - Anglia etc.
Wind direction from the South = often mild, snow very unlikely.
Wind direction from the South West = Atlantic - powerful maritime winds which race across the Pond to crash upon the Celtic shore of Ireland and Cornwall. Rain and lots of it with above freezing temps. A typical January day in the West during a regular Atlantic flow of wind is about 45 to 50f.
The daffodils will bloom on the Scilly Isles in late February in this kind of weather. Wind from the So'West is the prevailing wind direction over the UK.
Wind direction from the West = Atlantic - strong with a hint of Canada and Greenland - often bracing but seldom freezing - again a lot of rain, esp over Wales and the West of Breten and Ireland.
Wind direction from the West by North West or North West - cold Icelandic Viking storms - seldom snow but often sleet.
Weather here in UK can also often be very localised.
Although the present cold weather is unusual, it is by no means abnormal - we are in a North Eastern Siberian air flow and that's why it's cold.
What to look out for - the early arrival of Hooper Swans from Russia - they come to UK for our milder climate, food and also to rest up for the winter and get fat before going back home for the nesting season etc. Also large flocks of geese and ducks arriving early in the Thames Estuary. The River Thames Estuary is Europe's largest landing sites for water birds - a vast expanse of sea marshes on both shores, Essex and Kent - packed full of protein which the birds feed on.
Another good indicator is the North Atlantic Jetstream - this nex link shows you a chart and as you can see the air flow over the UK is from approx the North East - this is keeping us cold
http://www.weathercharts.org/jetstream-uk.htm
If you look at the chart at the above link, you can see milder air flowing over France from the Atlantic. Paris, for example, gets the same Maritime Weather as does the UK - but warmer in the Summer months.
If you want to escape the cold, you'll have to go a long way south. Ayia Napa in Cyprus is about 61F most days at this time of year. Give Spain a miss - they've had snow too but not sure how far south. Canary Isles might be a good destination. If you are going to fly out for Christmas, do check with your airline - Gatwick is closed right now but will probably open again at about 6am tomorrow.

Anyone knows the name of this Christmas film?
I really like a film about Christmas day, but unfortunately I cannot remember its name. I watched it since I was 14, 15 years old (now Im 21). I dont remember exactly its content, but what impressed me the most is the last scene. The father died but had a chance to be a Snowman for 1 day to meet his son. However, because the father was in the shape of a snowman, his son couldnt recognize him soon, When the son found the truth, he tried his best to prevent his father from melting. Unfortunately, the weather was quite warm and the father melted. Thats all I remember. it is a very moved film, and I really hope to know its name, to see it again. Please help me, thanks so much!

what are some facts about D-day?
I really need some good facts on D-day, help please?x
Answer: Facts:
1. Many disagree about the meaning for the letter D. What did it stand for? Why was it used? U.S. Army manuals dating as far back as WWI used the terms H-Hour and D-Day to indicate the time/date of an operation’s start.
2. The military also used the code name Operation Overlord to refer to the movement of men, planes, ships, supplies, and equipment across the English Channel along a beach front that stretched over 60 miles.
3. Approximately 5,000 vessels transported 150,000 men and 30,000 vehicles across the English Channel.
4. Six parachute regiments including 13,000 men were transported in over 800 planes.
5. Approximately 300 planes dropped bombs along the coast of Normandy immediately before the invasion began.
6. June 5, 1944 was the designated day, but poor weather held the invasion off.
7. Over 7,500 sorties (missions) were made across the channel on June 6, 1944.
8. War planners projected 5,000 tons of gasoline would be needed daily for the first 20 days after the initial invasion
9. Planners also projected 3,489 tons of soap would be needed for the first four months after the invasion.
10. By the time dusk fell on the evening of June 6th more than 9,000 Allied soldiers were dead and wounded. 100,000 soldiers had made it ashore.
11. Within weeks supplies were unloaded at UTAH and OMAHA beaches at the rate of 20,000 tons per day.
12. From D-Day through Christmas, 1944 over 30,000 Germans were captured and sent to American prisoner-of-war camps. Many POW camps were located in the United States….33 detention facilities were located in Texas.
13. FDR offered a prayer regarding the invasion in a radio address to the nation. Michael over at American Presidents Blog has posted the entire speech. It is very inspiring to read. He’s also posted a video from You Tube that has the actual audio from the speech with various pictures from the invasion. (Once the video is activated you might see some images at the bottom of the video screen…leave your cursor off the images or the video will switch and you will be watching something else.)
14. The paratroopers of the 101st paratrooper division expected 80% casualties on D-Day. Fortunately, they only took 20% casualties.

Does anybody know why there are no flights on Christmas eve with Ryanair?
Ive been checking every couple days for a few months now and people said maybe wait until you are exactly 6 months from your return date, check their FAQs, Email them etc etc I have and still no luck! My flight back on the 27th is up so its not the wait till 6 months exactly its just saying theres no flights on Christmas eve, Christmas day (obv) and boxing day! Does anyone know if they will be putting up flights for Christmas eve or if they are just not flying that day this year?
Answer: In the western world, many airports close over christmas...
(asia-pac countries, not a problem..)
And as christmas is a popular time to travel, so many of the flights are also booked up early...very early.
There is often bad weather.. and the risk of flight cancellations is also high.
Again another reason to avoid flying on anything but the early morning flights..
as they are the ones than do manage to get out even if it is very late in the day..
So ryan Air may have
a) sold out [if they are flying probbably the reason ]
b) decided trying to fly is not worth the problems and bad image of cancelled flights
PLUS they can give their staff the holiday...
Have you tried calling them... rather than email ?

What is the weather like around Mildenhall and Lakenheath?
My husband is in the military and we are moving to Mildenhall this coming summer. I have been fallowing the weather for the last few weeks but was wondering what the winters are like there typically and how long winter is? Is it windy? We are used to a warm climate. I just want to be prepared when we go. Does it snow a lot normally? When and what are the other seasons like.in this area?
Thanks
Dawn
Answer: Lakenheath is in Suffolk on the east coast of England.
The cold easterly winds blow in from the North Sea across Suffolk, Norfolk, Essex and Kent .A hundred miles north of Lakenheath they blow across the flat fens of Lincolnshire through the old town of Boston from where the Pilgrim Fathers set out in 1607 on their epic voyage to the New World across the Atlantic, where the city of Boston Massachusetts now holds the name of their home town, and grew a hundred times bigger. Old Boston still has the memories of those Puritans and still has the prison cells they endured.

The winters are long on the east coast of England, and in all of Britain. Wet and dark-sky'd, but with some respite and on some days, glorious blue sky, of which in Suffolk, like Texas, there is an awful lot.
Suffolk is big sky country and is where John Constable painted many of his lovely scenes of English rural life and painted the skies as a treasure of the landscape.

In March the winter is nearly gone and spring has already been forecast by the bright yellow daffodils and cowslips, and the skies are brighter, and lovely England is with us again more than not.
Cold wet miserable England is saying goodbye and Easter and the Easter Fairs are close.
In springtime it is still cool but with some windy days, and some warm ones ..well, warm for us poor folks for whom warm often means 'at least it's not as cold as it was'.
Summers are fine....oh lovely summer!
But the last one was wet.....weeks of it.
Only three months later we are in autumn and the cold wet weather comes again, the colours disappear from landscapes and the sky, and grey old England says once more "Oh, well, back to the real England. We've had our treats for this year."
Not a great picture,eh?
We get used to it, and some years we get quite spoilt.
It gets hot for a few weeks....call that days. No point tempting Providence.
Have a good time here and move around when you can, see what you can, enjoy what you can.
There's a lot of it for a small island.
This one is just sheer cruelty.....Christmas sunset on the castle last year .....patience,patience, maybe you'll be there soon on a boat along the river to Boulter's Lock.....enjoy.....

I want to can about 36 - 48 pints of green beans this summer and fall. What kind of beans should I plant?
- and how many plants should I have? Im not sure if I should do a pole bean or a bush bean, either. Ive grown french beans, but never canned any beans.
Answer: Good evening Blackbird,
I hope you had a great day. Runners/pole green beans will yield twice (2x) as many beans as bush green beans. The bushes also make it easier for snails, slugs, cutworms, and other insects to hide under. They will attack or eat any bean which touchs the ground. Grow, plant, fertilize, and treat the pole green beans the same way you did your french beans.
I have nine (9) fruit trees and a 20x20 ft vegetable garden. We give family and friends a big basket full of fresh and dried fruits and quart jars of difference types of vegetables as gifts at Christmas time. We have been canning, drying, and picking like this for years. They love to see us coming.
A ten (10) foot long roll of pole beans, properly planted (sun and fertilized) will easily yield 40 pints to green beans. You will have to pick and can every 7 to 10 days, depending on weather.
Tips: Try planting a few purple green beans to mix in with your green beans. You have less problems with insects. Caterpillars do not want to be seen against a purple background. This makes it easier for birds and wasps to find them. Also plant some basil and dill. These herbs draw wasps which attack the enemy insects, especially caterpillars on your plants. You can also use the herbs for cooking and canning.

WARNING about canning green beans:
If you have never canned green beans before, beware of "Botulism". It is NOT SAFE to use the water bath method on green beans. You MUST use a pressure canner.
You and your family have a beautiful week. Peace, from Los Angeles.
