Describe the effects of the Vietnam War on neighboring Cambodia.?
Describe the effects of the Vietnam War on neighboring Cambodia.
Answer: Some years ago, in hearings before the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Congressman Pete McCloskey concluded that what the US had done to Cambodia was greater evil than the US had done to any country in the world - and wholly without reason!
Between 1965 and 1969, US B-52’s secretly conducted thousands of sorties inside Cambodian territory, dropping massive amounts of explosives on Cambodian areas suspected of harbouring North Vietnamese forces. It's important to remember that Cambodia was a neutral country, and the Kissinger-orchestrated bombing campaign was kept undercover from the world's attention.
In April 1970, Nixon announced to the American public that US and South Vietnamese ground forces had entered Cambodia in a campaign aimed at destroying North Vietnamese bases in Cambodia. The North Vietnamese moved further into Cambodia, and the US stepped up the tempo by carpet-bombing deeper into the country, indiscriminately inundating rice fields and villages alike.
When President Clinton ordered the declassification of US Air Force files after his visit to Vietnam in 2000, the alarming statistics of the Cambodian bombing offensives came to light. The fact is that the United States dropped more bombs on Cambodia than all the bombs dropped by the allies on Europe and Japan (including Hiroshima and Nagasaki) during World War II.
More than 2.7 million tons of high explosives rained down on Cambodia. (See "Bombs Over Cambodia" by Taylor Owen and Ben Kiernan - www.yale.edu/cgp/Walrus).
The numbers of Cambodian peasant farmers, their wives and children who died in, and as a result of, the bombings has been estimated at up to one million. The number of refugees that were forced to flee to Phnom Penh and other cities is estimated at around 2 million. The economy, food supplies, and social structure of Cambodia were thrown into chaos, rendering the insurgent Khmer Rouge forces’ task of overthrowing the Gen. Lon Nol government as just a matter of time.
The relentless US bombing campaign (that had progressed for nearly 9 years, continuing even after the 1973 Paris Accords) contributed greatly to the destabilisation of the country. In "The Long Secret Alliance", John Pilger writes; ‘The US not only helped create conditions that brought Cambodia’s Khmer Rouge to power in 1975, but actively supported the genocidal force, politically and financially.’
After the US were defeated, they aligned themselves with the Khmer Rouge from 1978 on, providing money and weapons through concealed sources in the hope of destabilising the Vietnamese control of Phnom Penh. Pilger continues, ‘For the Americans in Bangkok and Washington, the fate of Cambodia was tied to a war they had technically lost seven years earlier. “Bleeding the Vietnamese white on the battlefields of Cambodia” was an expression popular with the US policy-making establishment. Destroying the crippled Vietnamese economy and, if necessary, overturning the government in Hanoi, was the ultimate goal. Out of that ruin, American power would again assert itself in Indochina.’
Backing Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge became very much an international effort. With Thai army logistical support, and funded by the US, arms from West Germany, the US and Sweden were channeled through Singapore into the hands of Khmer Rouge soldiers. Singaporean Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew, was a proponent of the US and Chinese position that the Khmer Rouge should be an integral part of the new Cambodia.
Between 1980 and 1986, the US was secretly funding Pol Pot’s exiled forces on the Thai border – to the tune of US$85 million. US aid workers reported that food and supplies intended for Cambodian refugees, had been redirected to feed the Khmer Rouge resistance forces, rapidly replenishing their strength.
US ally, China, was also a major arms supplier to Pol Pot. In fact, President Carter’s National Security adviser, Zbigniew Brzezinski, said in 1981; ‘I encouraged the Chinese to support Pol Pot...Pol Pot was an abomination. We could never support him but China could.’ The US, he added, ‘winked publicly’ as China sent arms to the Khmer Rouge through Thailand.
Although the Khmer Rouge government ceased to exist in January 1979, Cambodia’s seat at the UN continued to be occupied by Khmer Rouge representatives, for more than a decade. John Pilger states; ‘The United Nations was now the instrument of Cambodia’s punishment. In all its history, the world body has withheld development from only one Third World country: Cambodia... the major international financial institutions barred Cambodia from all international agreements on trade and communications. Even the World Health Organisation refused to aid the country... Not even Cuba and the Soviet Union faced such a complete ban...’
Pol Pot continued to operate vicariously, cosseted and protected by the world powers through the auspices of the UN, right up until media calls for his trial in 1997.
Needless to say, Cambodia and its people have yet to recover from the effects of what is often referred to as "America's Secret War".

THE NEXT WAR; A Shrinking Military Budget May Take Neighbors With It
WASHINGTON -- Military spending has transformed the faded farmlands of northern Virginia into a land of glass-block office parks, oversize homes and sleek cars. Average household incomes there are among the highest in the United States. The wellspring of this prosperity is not just the Defense Departments vast payroll, nor just the fat profit - Some experts are warning that prospects of 10 percent cut to the Pentagons budget over the next decade could have significant impact on scientific innovation; argue that spending less on military research could reduce economys long-term growth. Why do people care so much about if other people smoke pot?
Answer: Recently in my hometown of Roseburg, Oregon a woman and her boyfriend were arrested for delivery of methamphetamine....... for the fourth time...... someone please tell me how the hell this happens, how do you get busted four times dealing POISON {that’s what it’s made of}. They will probably end up out of jail within a year or two and be right back at it in no time.
Normally I an for things like smaller government and less government control of our lives. That said, I feel they need to protect the innocent in this country. Have you ever seen a picture of a meth lab? They are disgusting! And many of these degenerates have children inhaling the TOXIC fumes from them cooking this poison.
On May 4 2005 Dan Eggen of the Washington post reported that Marijuana had become the focus of the “Drug War”........ you have got to be kidding me.. The government is going to spend our resources on going after pot-heads and spend less time concentrating on the real drug threats like cocaine METH and heroin.... Am I alone on this or does this make no sense whatsoever!!! Heroin and coke are two of the most highly addictive drugs on this planet and there is tons of it. Meth is made from rat poison and is destroying my community. And they’re going after POT.
People kill for heroin and cocaine when was the last time you heard of a pot-head getting stoned and going on a rampage YOU WON’T. Now I have a solution that will solve many problems including addiction to hard drugs.
The first thing that needs done is the legalization, and subsequent regulation of marijuana by the ATF. This action will allow for fewer arrests and eliminate the criminal element of the plant. Fewer marijuana arrests will allow for more energy and money to be focused on the cocain and heroin traffickers, and what would make me even happier more money for an intense crackdown on methlabs, dealers and users.
Drug penalties must be severe, however one has to be careful. I say we form a two part system in the first one they are required to detox in a government run facility step two they are sent to be part of a labor camp were they will work off you debt to society on public works projects, or leased to private farms as a cheap alternative to illegal immigrant labor. With this system they are literally paying their debt to society. With these institutions I can almost guarantee a reduction in recidivism rates and who knows maybe the government will start winning their “Drug War”
As a closing note, vast amounts of illegal marijuana comes from the organized drug cartels in Mexico now legalizing pot will take a way a huge source of their revenue and weaken the grip they have on our neighbor to the south.

what is the difference between Democrats and Republicans?
Okay, obviously if one party has control, the other opposes it. But when of the big reasons I am a conservative is because of my view on law and order, with my biggest ones being the right to protest and things like wiretaps and pot laws. Well, I had a tea partier (my neighbor) who was practically trying to get me all pissed off and riled up at obama (Im 16) and go to a tea party protest with him and my parents. As an example my parents say they are conservative and that I am a liberal, but isnt the Tea party sort of counter-conservatism. Cuz during Bushs term, that same neighbor would always bitch and complain about the way that Bush was running the country and that he would only vote Democratic and went to all of the local anti-war rallies, and now he thinks that Democrats are evil because they take his money. At this point Im thinking of not even voting because one of the most useless ideas (protesting) is supported by both parties. So I ask you, what good does protesting war or taxes do? All i see it doing is being used by both sides to call the others extremists, The Democrats are calling the Tea Partiers racist (which they obviously are not) and the GOP called the Democrats un-American (which is not true because their are moral reasons to be anti-war) but, in my opinion protests are completely ignored by politicians and they then turn destructive and become riots. Then when the police are called in the riots get worse. So what the hell is the difference between both the parties anymore. At this point I cant even stand talking to my parents about govt or anything like that because they are anti-tax and anti-war and I am in favor of protecting our nation (despite what the cause was for going into Iraq, I did not think we should leave until we fixed up the place and had rid the nation of insurgents) and see taxes as a necessary utility that should not be abused (so dont waste it on things like researching rat feces). Im not trying to rant or anything like that, but which party is against protesting and heckling, because whatever the hell it is they better sign me up because my neighbors and even some of my family are getting caught up in the heat of the moment and instead of looking at things calmly and maybe trying to elect someone who is gonna change stuff, they vote the same douchebags into office.
Yeah Im a moderate too, but the big reason I was a Republican was because I am anti-protesting and support the war on drugs, yet I see a Republican governor in CA okay with legalizing pot and I see tea party protestors, so really I have no party to support anymore. Because I dont think we should have no taxes, and I dont think we should be totally pacifistic so I am completely in the middle other than law and order.
Answer: You have a lot of questions rolled into one, and they are all good ones.
I am totally with you about the need to stay calm and not get caught up in the heat of the moment. It can be tough to do, and requires self-discipline. Giving up and lumping every elected official into the category of douchebag is a version of getting caught up in the heat of the moment, though.
In my opinion we can't fix Iraq, and we certainly can't rid Iraq of insurgents. By now we have been in Afghanistan so long that most of the people fighting us probably don't even know why we are there and see themselves as defending the country from invaders.
I mostly agree with you about taxes, but there are public health reasons for the government to fund research on rat feces, which is sometimes the source of fatal diseases such as hantavirus.
If you live in an open primary state there is not much of a reason to affiliate with any political party unless you run for office, when it is extremely helpful to have the party organization (and donors) to help you get elected. Personally, I vote for the candidate and am a registered Democrat, but my natural sympathies lean toward "Rockefeller Republican" - wikipedia has a fairly accurate article about Rockefeller Republicans. I am considering re-registering as a Republican because I do not live in an open primary state and most of the races these days are being determined at the level of primaries.
In all honesty, though, the reason why I can't bring myself to register Republican because I can't stomach the reactionary, holier-than-thou message of the Republican party and conservatives in my state. The backlash against Democrats after the 2008 election was shocking, when a completely Republican slate was swept into state-wide elected offices, including throwing out some very good Democrats that were endorsed by our largest (and conservative) newspaper.
Participating a public demonstration is a way of multiplying your voice in expressing your opinion and raising awareness of an issue. Not all public demonstrations are protests per se. For example, in the 1963 the civil rights March on Washington was a peaceful demonstration, and the venue for one of the greatest, most effective and moving speeches in American history: Martin Luther King's
"I have a dream" speech.
King was a Republican, probably because it was the party of Abraham Lincoln and the Southern Democrats were a historically a very racist bunch. I have a feeling that he tended to vote Democrat for President, though.
Not all elected officials are douchebags. Evaluate candidates on an individual basis and WORK to help get the good ones elected. Find a candidate and volunteer.
And research the issues! Research includes checking the validity of sources!
I hope that this helps.
