What are the best things to do in Philadelphia?
I am going to Philadelphia for a long weekend at the beginning of October for a football game, and I have never been there before. What are some of the best things to do and see? I am really into history and architecture. I would love to do some shopping as well. Any advice on some cool things to check out would be great, and where do you get the best Philly cheese steak?
Answer: HI,
Philadelphia is rich in history, culture, and the eclectic. There's so much to enjoy in the City of Brotherly Love and the Birthplace of American Independence, and here are ten things visitors should see in Philly.
1. Pack up the kids and spend the day at the Philadelphia Zoo.
2. Brush up on arts and culture at the nation's oldest museum.
3. Relive the luxury and elegance of colonial life Fairmont Park.
4. Grab a taste of everything downtown at the Reading Terminal Market.
Note:The nation's oldest market (12th and Arch Streets; 215.922.2317) opened in 1892 and is steeped in the smells and traditions of the City of Brotherly Love. (Mondays through Saturdays from 8AM until 6PM)
5. Continue east to the historic district and start with the Liberty Bell.
6. Don't end your stay without indulging in a Philadelphia Cheesesteak Sandwich!
Note : Every visitor must sample Philadelphia's native treat: a sandwich dripping with greasy fresh beef and cheese, complemented with onions and peppers. Some of Philly's best may be found at Jim's Steaks (400 South Street, at the corner of 4th; 215.928.1911). Each cheesesteak is cooked to order and a very stomach pleasing treat after a long day on the streets.

How can I work my way up to running 10 miles by the end of the summer?
I need to be able to run 10 miles at the end of the summer. Help me with a plan or tips etc. thanks!
Answer: Sarah, it would be helpful to know if you have any time issues here. However, presuming that time is not an issue:
The main thing is to be able to build up your endurance. One key is to do what we do when training for marathons, and that's LSD: Long Slow Distance.
When doing an LSD run (often just called a "long run"), you plan to run about a minute to 90 seconds per mile SLOWER than your normal 10K race pace. If you do not have a PR for 10K, then take you mile time and run about 2 minutes slower per mile.
After each 15-20 minutes at that pace, slow down to a walk in order to recover. That is, to get more oxygen into your body. Then start running again for another 15-20 minutes at the same pace as before. Keep alternating like that.
Each week, add another two miles to the overall length of your Long Run.
Now, if finishing time is an issue, here are a few tips to increase your speed:
Keep building up your long run until you reach 8 miles. Then, on alternate weekends, do "repeat miles". That is, run miles at your 5K race pace, taking a minute or two to pause after each mile. The number of repeat miles would be half of the distance of your long run from the previous week.
Thus, your chart of your weekend Long Run activity would look like this:
Starting with Week 1: 4 miles (or whatever you are able to do for starters).
Week 2: 6 miles
Week 3: 8 miles
Week 4: 4 repeat Miles
Week 5: 10 Miles
Week 6: 5 repeat Miles
Week 7: 12 miles
Week 8: 6 repeat miles
Week 9: 14 miles
Week 10: 7 repeat miles
The idea of going longer than your target distance is that you will be running them at a pace that is slower than normal. All you are trying to do here is to build up your endurance. The level of confidence you should have if you follow this pattern should be enormous. If you can do the workouts, you should be able to do the run!
By the way, one other rule to remember: NEVER have hard runs on consecutive days. Whatever day you pick for your Long Run should have an easy day scheduled on both sides of it. If you pick Sunday for your Long Run, make sure your runs on Saturday and Monday are always easy....relaxed pace..not too long as far as distance goes...no hills to speak of. Hill runs are good on Tuesday, with a good Tempo run on Thursday.Wednesday and Friday would be easier runs. If yor long run is on Sunday, consider using Saturday as a rest day. You will not lose any conditioning when taking one day of rest.
By the way, I always chose Sunday for my long runs because most of my marathons were run on Sundays. Whatever you do, make sure you keep it consistent.
Good luck and good running!
Please note that the pause after each of the "repeat miles" should be sufficient to let your heart rate return to near normal. Presuming you have a healthy heart, this should not take a long time. Just be sure to have a watch with you to check your pulse after each mile. Generally, wait about a minute or two for it to slow down before taking the pulse for the first time. After a while, you should get the hang of it.

Is it realistic to think we can design and build a structure to store nuclear waste for 10,000+ years?
I have a presentation due on Monday and the thought occurred to me that there are no known man-made structures able to stand the test of time and contain radioactive materials until they decay. Am I wrong?
Lambchop, The plans for nuclear waste storage that I have seen are usually created deep underground away from earthquake fault lines...But will they last?
Answer: Few things are perfect and 10,000 years increases the probability that something will go wrong. Several low risk proposals are available, and we can reduce the risk by doing several of them. We may continue to pursue some of the worst choices, So building lots more nuclear power plants for this and several other reasons may not be wise. Neil

What are some fun free things to do in San Diego, CA or in the surrounding area?
Im planning on going to San Diego next summer with my best friend as our high school graduation present and Id like to find some free (as well as paying) things to do while were there.
Answer: 25 FREE things to do:
1. Head to San Diego’s many beaches, all free to the public, to swim, body surf or hang-ten. Play in the sand, collect seashells or just bask in the sun.
2. Visit La Jolla Cove and see the magnificent sunset on the ocean. La Jolla Cove is one of the most spectacular natural settings in the world.
3. Visit downtown San Diego's Seaport Village for hours of free entertainment, leisurely strolling and window-shopping. Enjoy a laid-back day of hanging out in the grass and watching the many passing yachts and ships on picturesque San Diego Bay, or take in the sights from one of the many bay-view eateries.
4. Stroll through the 16½-block historic Gaslamp Quarter in downtown San Diego and view the renovated turn-of-the-century Victorian architecture, home to boutiques, art galleries, specialty shops and more.
5. Fly a kite along the grassy field in the Tecolote Shores of Mission Bay Park, a 4,600-acre aquatic park. Here, away from trees and overhead wires, friends and family gather to launch colorful kites into the bay breezes.
6. Enjoy free organ concerts at 2 p.m. on Sundays at the Spreckels Organ Pavillion in Balboa Park. The Organ Pavillion features one of world’s largest outdoor pipe organs, a San Diego landmark since 1914, where organists play traditional favorites, waltzes and show tunes on enormous 32-foot pipes.
7. Visit Old Town and witness the living legacy of San Diego history. Guests are also invited to wander free through Old Town’s historic buildings, including the blacksmith shop, Seeley Stables, Stewart House, Estudillo House and the oldest schoolhouse in San Diego.
8. Bike or jog along Mission Bay Park’s many trails. Joggers and walkers share more than 20 miles of scenic running paths that wind through sunlight and shade near the shoreline and feature workout courses at planned stations along the route.
9. Visit the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista for a free tour of the 150-acre facility, including training fields and tracks, athlete dorms and the Otay Lake Reservoir. Tours are offered daily from the Copley Visitor Center between 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Monday through Saturday, and 11 a.m-3 p.m. on Sunday.
10. Stargaze outside the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park on the first Wednesday of every month. The San Diego Astronomy Association sets up huge telescopes to offer guests a great view of all the stars in the night sky.
11. Take a scenic, one-hour drive to Mt. Laguna. Once there, hop out for an invigorating hike and enjoy the fresh mountain air whispering through the pines.
12. Step back in time with a stop in Julian, a century-old gold mining town in the Cuyamaca Mountains. Pick up a free map at the Chamber of Commerce for a self-guided walking tour of the area’s historic sites and later enjoy a slice of homemade apple pie – a Julian specialty!
13. Grab your picnic basket and head to Torrey Pines State Park where you can watch talented and daring hang-gliders do tricks in the strong winds that sweep along the coastline cliffs.
14. Cross the border into colorful and exciting Tijuana, Mexico. Entrance is free, the people are friendly, and the shops offer unique gifts and apparel as well as great window-shopping. -OR NOT.
15. Rollerblade, skateboard or bicycle along the Mission Beach Boardwalk, a scenic 3-mile boardwalk along picturesque Mission and Pacific Beaches.
16. Visit Mission Trails Regional Park to explore the cultural, historical and recreational aspects of San Diego. Stop at the Visitor’s Center and learn about the wonders of nature and the people who once lived on the land. Or, roam through the park’s 40 miles of natural and developed hiking and biking trails.
17. Go scuba diving or snorkeling off San Diego’s shores and see spectacular creatures of the sea. La Jolla Cove offers some of the clearest waters on the California coast, as well as miles of protected underwater preserves to explore.
18. Go bird watching at the Torrey Pines State Reserve. Located high above Torrey Pines State Beach, the area is home of the rare and ancient Torrey Pine as well as a beautiful protected habitat for swifts, thrashers, woodpeckers and wrentits.
19. Stroll through Balboa Park and marvel at its beautiful Spanish Colonial Revival architecture. While there, take advantage of the park’s variety of offerings, including 15 museums (select museums free on Tuesdays), free daily park tours, public organ concerts (Sundays), and spectacular gardens (seven are free daily).

What if the bank didnt send me any taxable interest things?
I am doing my taxes online, and realize that I dont have any taxable interest things from my bank. I dont have much interest, less than 20 dollars, is there anything I can do without the interest form?
Answer: They are not required to send the Form 1099-INT if the interest is less than $10. (You still claim the interest even if it's less than $10.) They don't need to have them in the mail until Monday so there are still a few more days.
Your Dec statement should show the year to date interest paid and your Jan statement will often show that as well. If you have on-line access to your account you can probably retrieve the amount that way as well.
Worst case, call them in the morning and ask.

Answer: Global Warming? New Data Shows Ice Is Back
Tuesday, February 19, 2008 11:55 AM
By: Phil Brennan Article Font Size
Are the world's ice caps melting because of climate change, or are the reports just a lot of scare mongering by the advocates of the global warming theory?
Scare mongering appears to be the case, according to reports from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that reveal that almost all the allegedly “lost” ice has come back. A NOAA report shows that ice levels which had shrunk from 5 million square miles in January 2007 to just 1.5 million square miles in October, are almost back to their original levels.
Moreover, a Feb. 18 report in the London Daily Express showed that there is nearly a third more ice in Antarctica than usual, challenging the global warming crusaders and buttressing arguments of skeptics who deny that the world is undergoing global warming.
The Daily express recalls the photograph of polar bears clinging on to a melting iceberg which has been widely hailed as proof of the need to fight climate change and has been used by former Vice President Al Gore during his "Inconvenient Truth" lectures about mankind’s alleged impact on the global climate.
Gore fails to mention that the photograph was taken in the month of August when melting is normal. Or that the polar bear population has soared in recent years.
As winter roars in across the Northern Hemisphere, Mother Nature seems to have joined the ranks of the skeptics.
As the Express notes, scientists are saying the northern Hemisphere has endured its coldest winter in decades, adding that snow cover across the area is at its greatest since 1966. The newspaper cites the one exception — Western Europe, which had, until the weekend when temperatures plunged to as low as -10 C in some places, been basking in unseasonably warm weather.
Around the world, vast areas have been buried under some of the heaviest snowfalls in decades. Central and southern China, the United States, and Canada were hit hard by snowstorms. In China, snowfall was so heavy that over 100,000 houses collapsed under the weight of snow.
Jerusalem, Damascus, Amman, and northern Saudi Arabia report the heaviest falls in years and below-zero temperatures. In Afghanistan, snow and freezing weather killed 120 people. Even Baghdad had a snowstorm, the first in the memory of most residents.
AFP news reports icy temperatures have just swept through south China, stranding 180,000 people and leading to widespread power cuts just as the area was recovering from the worst weather in 50 years, the government said Monday. The latest cold snap has taken a severe toll in usually temperate Yunnan province, which has been struck by heavy snowfalls since Thursday, a government official from the provincial disaster relief office told AFP.
Twelve people have died there, state Xinhua news agency reported, and four remained missing as of Saturday.
An ongoing record-long spell of cold weather in Vietnam's northern region, which started on Jan. 14, has killed nearly 60,000 cattle, mainly bull and buffalo calves, local press reported Monday. By Feb. 17, the spell had killed a total of 59,962 cattle in the region, including 7,349 in the Ha Giang province, 6,400 in Lao Cai, and 5,571 in Bac Can province, said Hoang Kim Giao, director of the Animal Husbandry Department under the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, according to the Pioneer newspaper.
In Britain the temperatures plunged to -10 C in central England, according to the Express, which reports that experts say that February could end up as one of the coldest in Britain in the past 10 years with the freezing night-time conditions expected to stay around a frigid -8 C until at least the middle of the week. And the BBC reports that a bus company's efforts to cut global warming emissions have led to services being disrupted by cold weather.
Meanwhile Athens News reports that a raging snow storm that blanketed most of Greece over the weekend and continued into the early morning hours on Monday, plunging the country into sub-zero temperatures. The agency reported that public transport buses were at a standstill on Monday in the wider Athens area, while ships remained in ports, public services remained closed, and schools and courthouses in the more severely-stricken prefectures were also closed.
Scores of villages, mainly on the island of Crete, and in the prefectures of Evia, Argolida, Arcadia, Lakonia, Viotia, and the Cyclades islands were snowed in.
More than 100 villages were snowed-in on the island of Crete and temperatures in Athens dropped to -6 C before dawn, while the coldest temperatures were recorded in Kozani, Grevena, Kastoria and Florina, where they plunged to -12 C.
If global warming gets any worse we'll all freeze to death.

REDSKINS 17, GIANTS 16; Redskins Defeat Giants to Tighten N.F.C. East Race
LANDOVER, Md. — It seemed like the Giants were past this. Their second-half slump, a veritable staple under Coach Tom Coughlin in recent years, appeared to hit its nadir a few weeks back with a disaster in Cincinnati, and the Giants had rebounded from that thrashing by delivering an utter demolition of Green Bay two Sundays ago. What questions should i ask at my pups first vet visit?
Hes a 9 week golden retriever and hes getting his second shots today, tmrw he turns 10 weeks
what things should i ask the vet, i am a first time dog owner, so i would like to know in advance
thanks
should i ask her grooming questions,
feeding,
activity levels ?
Answer: Is there...anything in particular you want to know? If not there's nothing you need to ask...I'd call on monday and ask if he'd like a stool sample, check for worms.
Ahhh I see. Vets go to school to perform medicine. They don't learn (much) about diet, and no nothing of grooming or training (never take training advice from a vet unless the vet is an accomplished trainer as well, few are). Vets usually recommend whichever brand they sell (usually Hills aka Science Diet). Most dog foods contain grains (corn, wheat, rice). Grain is an unnatural diet for a dog or any other carnivore, grain is cow and people food (and cows who aren't feed grain taste better!). I feed a raw diet, I go to the supermarket or butcher and buy fresh, raw meat and feed it to my dogs the way I bought it, fresh and raw. Dogs aren't designed to eat cooked meat nor grains. ALL dog foods contain cooked protein, and the vast majority contain grain..therefore dog food is an unnatural diet for a dog or any other carnivore. It's funny to me how...wolves and lions and tigers at the zoo are fed raw meat, but our pet subspecies of wolf (dogs) are fed a diet of 70% ground yellow corn! Research a raw prey modeled diet. 70-80% raw muscle meat, 10-20% raw organ (half of which should be liver), and 10% (raw edible) bone. It's the best diet you could ever feed your dog and I feed it to all of my dogs (even my rescues which include a jack russ/chihuahua mix...a raw diet isn't breed exclusive).

What are some things that you are doing to help save some extra money?
I have started cutting coupons cutting my grocery bills in half every week. I reuse things, such as when my dog food bag is empty, I also use it as a trash bag, lol. I have been trying to keep the AC off & the windows open.
What are something that you do to try & save a penny?
Answer: 1. I called my electric company and we have a time of use plan, which means I can chose 7 am to 7 pm or 7 pm to 7 am as my time of use where i get charged only .06 cents per unit of electricity. I chose 7 pm to 7 am since we are all home at those time and use a lot of electricty then. During 7 am to 7 pm electricity is .20 per unit so I am careful to save electricty then. I use the dishwasher, washing machine, and take showers (use of hot water heater) at night.
2. Put window film on my windows to keep the sun out.
3. I get shampoo, bodywash, bar soap, toothpaste, pain relievers, shaving gel, creme rinse, for free. I do this using the register rewards and extra bucks at walgreens and CVS. Just buy the products and get that money back from the store to buy something else in the store.
4. I gather all the local grocery store ads and they all have instore coupons for 1/2 price each item or less. I recently got a 4 pack double roll TP, 2 large bottles of heinze ketchup, 2 bottles of sweet ray bbq sauce, 1 pack of hot dog buns, 1 pack of hamburger buns, 2 boxes of 12 each popsicles (name brand), 9 packets of kool-aid, 2 containers of sour cream, all for 13.00 which was a 10.00 savings. I am lucky to live close to all the stores and run around to all the stores having sales. One store last week had gallon milk for 1.69 and you can freeze milk.
5. I rent movies only at the redbox dispenser at the store and there is one at the walgreens too. They release all the latest DVDs just as any other video store does. The cost is 1.00 a night compared to 2.99 at the local video store and 3.99 from the cable on demand. Also they always have sales like this summer free movies first monday of the month.
6. Put a jacket around my water heater.
7. Changed my bulbs.
8. Put a motion detection bulb in my garage because we kept leaving that light on.
9. Match store sales with manufacture coupons from the sunday paper. A store can have a sale for an item for .99 cents and you usually will have a coupon for 1.00 off so you get it free. Or find stores that double coupons which is better. get lots of food free or reduced b y using coupons and store sales.
10. I buy scented disposable diaper bags from the dollar store and use them as doggie bags. Really cheap. 100 for 1.00.
11. I needed some baskets for organization. I got them at the goodwill for next to nothing.
12. I sold a lot of stuff I have not used in years on Craig's list.
13. I bought a desk I needed on Craig's list.
14. I rarely buy stamps, envelopes or money orders. I do online banking and save money and time.
10.

Why do we have regulatory commissions to regulate prices on things?
Arent they supposed to monitor the prices of utilities, oil, gas and such? For the past 10 years prices have skyrocketed more than ever before and theres no end in sight. I think alot of the rate hikes are due to greed and yet these commissions do nothing to stop it. What are your feelings on this?
Answer: California used to regulate the price of energy, but deregulated by special election.
Beginning March 31, 1998, many of California's electricity consumers were allowed to make choices when they purchased their electricity. The decades-old structure of area-specific monopolies for electricity was changed under what is called "restructuring" or deregulation. Begun by the California Public Utilities Commission in 1992, the course electricity deregulation took was directed by legislation, mainly Assembly Bill 1890 and Senate Bill 90.
Because of flaws in the deregulation process, the California Public Utilities Commission suspended direct access in September 2001. Other problems, too numerous to explain here, also occurred. Many periodicals and books have examined and analyzed what went wrong with the state deregulation efforts. We'd recommend investigating those books and magazines at your local public or school library.
Under restructuring, the California Energy Commission was directed by the Legislature to deal with restructuring's impacts on renewable energy; energy research, development and demonstration (RD&D) programs; create a retail electricity disclosure program; and hold proceedings focussing on information access. Four Web Sites have been created by the Energy Commission to focus on these areas.

What will my doctor do if my baby isnt kicking like she normally does?
Im 29 weeks pregnant and I really havent felt much movement since about 6 this morning. Im planning on calling my doctor 1st thing Monday morning, but does anyone know what theyll do about it? She usually gets pretty active in the afternoon for a bit and then again after dinner, but so far today not much. Anyone have any advice?
Answer: After 20 weeks, you need to go directly to your birthing center and get the babies heart rate checked. First, drink a big glass of some sugary drink (OJ will do), then lay down for 10 minutes and count your kicks. You should get lots. If not, go in, don't wait until Monday.

A Little Knowledge About Griffin May Be Dangerous
