The rest of Newtown's schools reopened with grief counselors and police present, though it was unclear how many of the town's 4,700 students would attend. LETTERS; Sunday Dialogue: Schools for Rich and Poor
Readers discuss how to reduce educational inequities. The Letter To the Editor: Poor children living in poor communities do not have access to the same educational opportunities as their wealthier peers, and no amount of testing or so-called accountability will change this truth. Yet the solution that Mitt Romney promotes, allowing poor students to
Is there something wrong with me if I think that people have an easy life because of where they live (read on)?
Okay, so I am a 17 year old Asian American male who has lived in many countries and many states. For the past 5 years I have had to live in the deep south, a small deep south town where I have been bullied and jumped at times. I have had to hear some of the worst racial slurs out of anyone because of being who I am. I do not know why my parents job brought me here. I always wanted to play football but couldnt because all of the local high school were of poor quality and there is still heavy animosity towards Asian kids there, I tried to convince my parents to let me go to a local high school so they scheduled a visit. In that visit someone threw a stapler in my direction and told me to go back to my own country.
I am currently a senior at a difficult magnet school which is academically competitive. My first 2 years were rough because I had little support from my family and I had extremely bad influences, kids would bother me so I did not get a chance to focus on my GPA.
Right now my GPA is a 3.2 and my SAT score is a 1940. Whenever I see shows like MTV and whenever I watch a channel like CNN, I always think that it is a joke whenever they show the "struggles" of a kid living in New York. I used to live in New York but now I had to spend my high school years in this dump of a state full of racists. Whenever CNN or other TV Channels show how rough life is for kids in NYC and New Jersey, I switch the channel and get mad because I believe that those kids have not had as rough of a life as I have had. I wont even be able to play football because my high school is not allowed to have a program. I missed my chance of playing football and living a regular life, instead I had to live a rough life down south.
As a result of that rough life I get mad at a lot of the kids in NY (new york) and other states appearing on CNN and other channels whining about their situation. I know that if I ever had a chance to live in those states I would be a top student and everything. I get mad whenever I see those kids on TV and CNN and other news channels preaching about their "struggles" because in my view those kids have not gone through half the things I had to go through.
How can I alleviate my situation? How can I quit being so disgruntled?
Answer: I knew 2 people. One was an Asian girl with rich parents, she lived in Connecticut and another was a Black boy from a middle class family, he lived in Georgia. Well the Asian girl was your typical spoiled rich girl, she had her friends clique and everything, her grades and SATs were good, her SAT was good because her parents hired her some tutors and her grades were good because she went to a high school where everyone liked her.
The Black boy went to a difficult magnet school because all of the other schools in his area were plagued with drug dealings and shootings. The kid did not do so hot in high school, he had a 3.0 GPA and a 1050 SAT score (on the old scale of the SAT which only counts math and reading).
So college admissions time came and here were the results
The girl was accepted into Yale, Harvard, Princeton, Cornell, Northwestern, Carnegie Melon, U Conn and University of Pennsylvania.
The boy was accepted into Tuskegee, Georgia State, Hampton and some smaller unknown colleges in Georgia and South Carolina. The guy applied to Yale but was denied admission.
Well the guy ends up going to college, getting a 4.0 GPA and getting a high MCAT score, result? He ends up going to Med school at Harvard.
The girl is still in college and she won't be attending med school or law school. Her GPA is too low, without her parents she does not know what to do and she will be lucky to even graduate, an undergrad from Yale won't get you a six figure job.
Do you see the moral of the story? Resilience conquers all. Struggles are answered with gifts by god.
You had a rough life (any Asian kid growing up in a small deep south town would) and you did not get much compared to other kids, well sometimes you have to get it instead of letting someone hand it to you. Those kids in NY that CNN shows, well the thing is they get more media exposure because they are in NY but thats them. If they want to whine over little struggles, let them, they won't get anywhere in life with their whining. Some kids in NY do truly struggle but the ones shown on CNN are only there for the attention, a lot of them do not have a rough life (I have seen some of them for myself).
Count your blessing. Those kids don't know struggle but you do, so make the best of your situation and thrive off of it. You probably won't get into Harvard or Yale, miracles are in short supply but colleges in the Northeast are not. Go out there and apply, forget being disgruntled. Let the other kids lick their wounds, you should go out there and perform. When you do become someone great in the future, you will thank your situation for it.
As for football, you can always attend a d3 college and walk on to their team. Also if you don't get to play in college you can play in the CFL, USFL and IFL. Those leagues contain people who haven't played football before. If you go to a d3 school you will most likely make the team so what have you got to lose? I hope your situation turns out for the best.

POISONED WEB; Online Bullies Pull Schools Into the Fray
