The New Abortion Providers
On a clear and mild March day in 1993, the Operation Rescue leader Randall Terry spoke at a rally in southern Florida against abortion. Weve found the weak link is the doctor, he told the crowd. What happened to the American moderate/independent?
Perhaps it is because many of the political opinions I find are on the internet (places like this) but it seems I can find little to no proportion of actual individuals who dont take the ideologies they are fed too far. Both sides seem to read their parties platform and then espouse it in the extreme, and god forbid if anyone disagreed with them their gut reaction is to accuse their enemy of existing on the opposite of their boundary. For instance, if I said corporate America requires at least some regulation and that the wealthiest people in America should pay the same proportion of their income as all other Americans, there will inevitably be a conservative there to call me a socialist, or marxist, or more likely a "libtard". On the other side if say that uncontrolled immigration can be a serious detriment to America and that almost always gun control is ineffective and naive, I will be labeled by a multitude of liberals as a fascist and a conservatard (some imagination). Occasionally Il ll be talking to someone who Im agreeing with and Ill begin to be reassured, but then thell say something along the lines of "Ya, but muslims are all evil" or "But we all know Bush is a war criminal" and I just have to sigh. I tell people I dont particularly like Romney or Obama, and theyll say vote for Ron Paul! As if somehow a man who wants to dismantle the government would appeal to moderates. Is it simply that in this climate Americans gravitate to the ideological borders, or are people who dont agree with any of the choices simply too subdued or defeated to speak up? Having been on this board a little while I know most of you are unfortunately the types I am talking about, and inevitably you will respond in the method I have seen so many times. But could it be that deep down a few of you are just following the crowd and accepting an extreme ideology that in another political climate you might be quick to scoff at? Are there any other true moderates at heart? Perhaps?
Answer: An extreme right or an extreme left are not good either way. There always needs to be a balance, which seems increasingly rare when it comes to American politics. It doesn't help that both side BLAME the other instead of COMPROMISING and looking at the ISSUES facing this country. If against Obama then you're a "racist" if you're for Obama then you're a "communist"; it's ridiculous. I know not every American thinks like that, it just seems that the media plays both sides against each other. OBJECTIVITY is sorely lacking in Washington D.C and the media, which only makes the voter more apt to follow the right or the left, not both.

Why are gun nuts trying to present the gun control debate as a black and white issue when the majority of?
liberals have no interest at all in actually banning guns and are only for imposing common sense limits?
There are three things that most liberals would actually like to see regarding gun control:
Makers of semi-automatic assault type weapons need to change the design of the firing pin mechanisms so that these weapons cannot easily be converted to fully automatic function. As it now stands a gun-smith can convert many semi-automatic weapons to fully automatic in less than an hour.
A ban on sales of ammunition over the Internet. All sales of ammunition must be done in personal, face to face transactions and any seller of ammunition should have the legal right to refuse a sale if the person strikes them as "a bit off".
A ban on large capacity clips: like the 100 round drum magazine used by the Aurora shooter. These clips are designed purely for military style conflicts and have no practical application for target shooting or hunting. If a 24 round clip isnt large enough for your next deer hunting trip then you need some serious target practice. Anyone who tries to argue that a ban on clips with capacities in excess of 24 rounds would seriously compromise their activities is either an idiot, or a liar.
Now, why would anyone claim that the above 3 limits are impractical?
@ Justin - theres no such thing as a law that will "stop" a madman, the idea is that we have laws to hinder these peoples activities. The Aurora shooter purchased all of his items legally and many of those items were purchased over the Internet. The laws mentioned above would have limited the availability of materials and could have saved lives and reduced injuries. If hed had to stop to reload his weapon it might have given one of those movie-goers laying on the floor playing dead a chance to jump up and tackle him.
Anyone who claims that you cant find a gun-smith to convert a weapon to fully automatic is either a liar or theyve never been to Florida. You can find people all over Florida -and Im sure theyre in every other Bible Belt state- who will gladly convert a weapon to fully automatic for you for about $150.
Answer: I being more then likely the most over the top conservative on this venue.

Do you think this is fascist?
So I was talking with my therapist about a writing assignment she had me do, and I wrote my opinions on some things. She said that they were heavy handed, strict, compassionate, and fascist. However she is heavily liberal, and opposed to weapons in the home, and seems to think that people who own guns could blow any moment. For example she said one of the reasons is that the gun becomes and option in domestic arguments, and that your morel likely to shoot family. I told her that areas with the most gun restrictions have the most gun crime but she didnt believe me. But here are the opinions I wrote. These are not yet complete and would need more programs to go alongside them. She said by themselves they are fascist but would be less fascist if there were support networks. Here they are:/
Welfare:
1. Aid is capped at 3 years if the Receiver is not disabled. If the Receiver is disabled,
in that case they can be put on more permanent social security.
2. Cap aid at 2 children. Additional children born on welfare will not be covered.
However if the recipient had more before he/she started receiving aid they will be covered.
3. A program will be run for job placement in needed sectors, in jobs that also cover the cost of living.
Any one refusing to join the program will have benefits cut.
Illegal Immigration:
1. Check records for that persons name and if they pay taxes.
2. Check if they speak English.
3. Send illegal aliens currently in custody back to their home country.
4. Send border states militias to the border on armed patrol.
5. Complete fences along Mexican border.
6. Round up and deport known illegal aliens.
7. Make English de jure, along side its current de facto status, the official language in the U.S.
8. Encourage states to institute laws similar to Arizonas SB1070.
Gun control:
1. Eliminate gun free zones. They are easy slaughter zones for killers and an armed citizenry is the best defense against criminals.
2. Eliminate waiting periods for gun purchases.
3. Remove bogus assault weapons laws, which outlaw such features as barrel shrouds,
pistol grips, large magazines, flash suppressors, and short barrels, all of which are very useful for a citizen defending themselves.
4. Eliminate bogus air gun laws, as these are absurdly restrictive. In D.C for example they are virtually banned,
despite the fact that the injury rate from air guns is quite low.
In D.C, air guns cannot be shipped to or from D.C limiting purchase inside D.C,
except for the fact that there are no stores which sell them inside D.C;
in addition, air guns can be used to teach good habits and gun safety, as well as hunting vermin and for fun.
5. Reform city gun laws, returning to D.C again, allow open and concealed carry laws, similar to Virginias.
6. Expand Castle Doctrine to other States and cities, such as D.C
DC voting rights:
1. DC residential areas should be ceded to Maryland, while keeping federal areas in their own jurisdiction.
The residential area could be called Washington, Maryland, while the governmentall area would simply be the Federal District run directly by Congress.
So what she said is that the welfare portion would create a hugely impoverished underclass, and she in general doesnt agree with any of them.
Along with these would be job reform, economic reform, and education reform.
No I do not cry.
I didnt check to see if she was liberal.
Im willing to negotiate and bend these rules. The projects to make them viable would be very large I admit. I intend to adjust welfare to keep whole generations from living on it.
Answer: i wouldn't use the term "fascist" because you're not advocating a political system based on the idolization of one person as the absolute ultimate authority...
but your opinions are pretty far to the right. not to the extreme of "lunatic fringe" (i reserve that for the religious nutcases who currently run the GOP) but far right nevertheless.
i won't criticize your therapist, but i think i understand where she's coming from. people with right-wing views are too often very rigid and structured in their thought processes (just look at Proud Teapartier up there) and are usually unwilling to bend or compromise... which tends to render therapy completely ineffective.
the ability to empathize, to put yourself in someone else's shoes and understand their point of view, is crucial to any form of behavior modification - which is what most therapy aims for these days. you need to understand that there are shades of grey and the world isn't completely black and white. for example, do you understand and accept that in most cases, poor people are poor through no fault or shortcoming of their own?
for instance, under item #1 on your welfare list, you would cap benefits at 3 years (it's currently capped at 2 years, but whatever - and item #3 is already in place as well). okay, fine. what happens when the expiration date comes and the economy still sucks and there are no jobs to be had within commuting distance? would you be willing to pick up the tab for relocating an entire family and giving them the assistance they'd need to get started again?
or would you simply say "the limit is the limit and you're sh*t out of luck"?
in other words, exactly HOW rigid is your thinking? how much are you willing to negotiate?
or are these opinions your "ideals"?... the way you think things SHOULD be and the goals we should strive for even if our efforts fall short?
sounds like you've got more to discuss with your therapist... one thing i've noticed, though - and i've been to a number of shrinks - if they can tell that your therapy isn't going to go anywhere, they'll cut you loose and encourage you to find someone else, so they can focus their efforts on helping someone they can have a positive effect upon.
in other words, i doubt she'll rip you off just to keep your money rolling in.

I have a question about gun control?
If the Government had to end the 3/5ths compromise with the 13th amendment, wouldnt they have to amend the constitution to nullify and restrict the 2nd amendment?
If they didnt have to, why would they bother amending the Constituion to prohibit slavery? Why not just pass a regular law?
Obviously states and cities can do whatever they want, but as far as the Federal Government regulating assault rifles, isnt that illegal?
Answer: The Federal government has the right to place reasonable restrictions on our rights. Just look at the restrictions on fully automatic weapons that they put in place back in 1986 with the National Firearms Act (also knows as the NFA of 1986). Before 1986 you could buy a standard semi-auto AR-15 and convert it to full auto with M-16 parts and it was legal. But when the NFA went in to effect you could not do that any more and anyone that possessed a fully automatic firearm had a certain amount of time to register it or face prison time if caught with it. It also restricted the sales of any fully automatic weapon that was made after the law went in to effect to governmental agencies like police and military. They did not ban the right to own a fully automatic weapon as the ones that were built before 1986 can still be bought by anyone (unless blocked by a state law). The buyer just needs to pay a $200 tax and get a background check done. The funny part is they first called the $200 tax a "transfer fee" but when that was challenged in court back then it was deemed unconstitutional as a fee but was okay if they called it a tax (sound familiar?).
The problem is is how do you define "reasonable"? As with the AWB (Assault Weapons Ban) from 1994 they can prevent certain cosmetic features from being sold on semi-automatic weapons like pistol grips, bayonet mounts, and large capacity magazines. These are just features. They couldn't ban the most import feature, the semi-auto mechanism itself. If they tried it would have been thrown out. So they had to settle for banning the cosmetic features instead in order to feel like they saved the world from evil. Several of the Democrats back then that supported the AWB even said they felt that all semi-automatic weapons should be banned for good, whether it's an "assault weapon" or a .22 pistol.
The "reasonable" status also applies gun control laws on a state level. Washington D.C. got slammed in court because they banned all handguns, if I remember correctly. D.C. felt that if you could still get bolt action rifles then your ability to own firearms wasn't being infringed upon. The courts said that was b.s. and it placed too much of a restriction on a citizen's 2nd amendment right. Now people in D.C. can get handguns but they have to go through a ton of paperwork and permits along with shelling out several hundred dollars in the process. They couldn't ban them so they tried to make the process as hard and expensive as possible. So now only people that have money to waste can get a handgun in D.C. but not those with low income (yet I don't see Democrats saying this is unfair to the poor, why not?).
Anyhow, the point is it will most likely take the court system to say what's okay and what's unconstitutional on any law that government passes, whether it's on a state level or Federal. If they want to go beyond what the courts consider "reasonable" then they would have to make a change to the Constitution instead. So they can pass laws with restrictions up to a certain point before they have to go as far as amending the Constitution.

As a moderate/independent, would it make more sense to vote for Romney or Obama?
I have not being following politics recently as it stresses me out...
Answer: Since you're a moderate, it really depends on how you view individual issues and which ones are the most valuable to you. For example, I am pro-life, but quite liberal in terms of my thoughts on foreign policy. Considering the current economic climate and international standing, I am more likely to put emphasis on foreign policy for this election; thus, that will be one of the issues that impacts my voting the most. If you give us some more information on what your thoughts are on each individual issue, we might be able to help you out a little more! Here are some ideas that might help you out a little bit:
Economics: very broad based category, I know. Romney is more about opening up and having "free markets." Trickle down economics, if you will. Obama is not as liberal as many might wish. He has been allowing for just as many loopholes for corporations and "the wealthy" as some like to put it as many Republicans. They're quite similar on many economic issues, but Romney will be slightly more conservative.
Foreign Policy: this is such a multi-facted issue that you almost need to talk about one specific country at a time. In terms of our conflicts overseas, Obama tends to be more about bringing troops home while Romney often regurgitates the typical Republican talking points. Romney has called for more military spending while Obama has wanted to spend less in that area, so it kind of depends on how you view the whole idea of defense spending in terms of how much we already spend and what you want to see go into it. They're both pro-Israel, but Obama has gotten more rough with them. Romney talks like he wants to stick it to China while Obama is a bit more compromising. Again, it depends on the region and the particular issue.
Healthcare: Romney supported a similar plan for healthcare in MA that Obama proposed on a national level. Romney opposes Obamacare, but, if he sticks to his guns, will simply alter the plan and do at least something on the national level. He says he wants to return power the states, which will be interesting. He's quite ambiguous on the topic since he does not want to be associated with state sponsored healthcare, as he has been attacked for that in the past.
Abortion: Romney is pro-life. Obama is pro-choice.
Gun Control: Obama will support more and Romney less, which is a typical Democrat/Republican thing.
Environment: this relates much back to economics. Obama has supported more restrictions on corporations in terms of what they can do to harm the environment, but not nearly enough in my opinion. Romney will, undoubtedly, be in favor of less restrictions and support drilling in the U.S.
Good luck with the voting! It's going to be an interesting election this time around. Romney has taken some liberal action in the past and Obama, some conservative. They're surprisingly similar on a lot of issues. Hopefully this helps out a bit! And I'm feeling you on the politics being stressful thing ;)

Gun Control? Your ideas as to what to do?
Ok. Enough is Enough. I am tired of Left Right Center / Liberal Conservative / or Republican or Democrat. All cry about gun control at the first sound of a shooting. Just exactly what do people want done? It is controlled. You have to present an ID (government issued) fill out a form and pay for the price of a firearm (anyone bought a Kimber?? the cheapest is $600), and in some places you have to pay a fee or a tax to have certain firearms. You cant live in California and go buy a handgun in Arizona or Texas. So what are these brilliant ideas everyone is crying about gun control??? As for private individuals the government can not regulate what private individuals sell to each other except for tax stamped weapons such as suppressors and automatics. Now how the gang banger gets his weapon obviously is not the right way. As for these so called crazy "lunatics" shooting up places, did you ever stop to analyze the whole situation??? A man who bought a gun legally and was pushed to his or HER breaking point and had enough and shot another human being. 9 out of 10 times that person left many clues as to his actions and people failed to listen and recognize. Dont just be mad at the shooter, start getting mad at the people who ignored the situation. So again what are some BRILLIANT ideas as to gun CONTROL????
Answer: Guns aren't going anywhere be they legal or not.
We must come to that basic compromise before going any further. We need no further gun control. The overwhelming majority of violent crimes are committed with illegal, black-market firearms. These illegal guns are never registered in the first place and were obtained unlawfully- thus ending the argument that gun control prevents violence. Gun control only limits law-abiding gun owners. The stricter gun laws get the more likely people are to turn to black market sources and the more out-of-control it gets.
Here is my 3 step idea:
1. Repeal nonsensical Gun-laws like the ones in California.
2. Get tough on people caught with unregistered, black-market firearms.
3. Bolster American gun companies like Colt and Ruger to create jobs and encourage people to purchase registered, trackable weapons.
