Lynne Truss Has Another Gripe With You
To some people, the fact that I am not married, or dont have children, would be the reason I have written a book on punctuation, Lynne Truss remarked on a recent afternoon in her gravelly British voice. She was sitting in her living room in Brighton, the seaside resort on the southern coast of England, where she inhabits a realm far removed from - Deborah Solomon, a contributing writer for the magazine, is completing a book on Norman Rockwell. - By Deborah Solomon
Help finding an apartment to rent in Paris France?
Im studying abroad this January and staying until May. A huge issue Im having is trying to find an affordable and real "legit" apartment.
Does anyone know of a website or any classifieds where people are renting out their flats?
I would really appreciate it.
Answer: You're looking forward renting a flat for 5 months, this is short term and considered as holidays rental, therefore, more expensive than long term rentals.
The cost of flat rental in Paris is mostly high because there are more clients than flats. On a long term basis, which is cheaper but, unfortunately, not your case, the price to rent a little unfurnished studio flat is above 800€ per month, plus charges. Students often live at students residences or rent a former maid's room, which are usually at the last floor of the building, no lift, toilets at the corridor to share with other tenants.
As you're coming to Paris to study and can't change your dates, I suggest you rent at a serious website, from an agency, not directly from the landlord because they can change their mind at the last minute.

I am going to the USA on Friday please tell me about tipping etiquette in the USA?
Things have changed so much in Europe in the last few years where even in France tips are now included into yor bill at restaurants.
Please tell about Porters (airport/hotel) Restaurants Rest rooms and anywhere else you can think of
Answer: Lots of answers here..some are very good (like B& 's guidelines), and others are just plain ignorant. I thought I'd try to explain to you the very American philisophy behind tipping, and how the system works, because it seems so strange to foreign visitors, sometimes.
I'm going to use restaurants as my example, because it's the most extreme case, but the philisophy runs throughout the service industry here.
The server who waits on you in a restaurant is making (except in California) 2 or 3 dollars/hour, and will be paying their support staff (the hostess who took you to your table, the busser who will clean up your table when you leave, the bartender who made your drinks) a total of 3% of whatever they sell during the shift. This means that the only money they will actually earn from working will come from your tips. Using the idea that the more you order, the harder they've had to work, we tip based on a percentage of the bill, and the percentage that we choose is kind of like voting on whether that person should continue to work in that industry, since truly someone earning great tip money is likely to stay (and vice versa). A 15% tip is kind of like abstaining from voting and sends a "you were adequate" message, while a 10% tip is like shouting "you were pretty awful", and a 20-25% tip is like applauding their excellence. A tip below 10% is completely uncalled for unless either you or the server is a complete nitwit.
The reason the restaurant doesn't simply pay a straight wage to the server is twofold: Not only is it nice to always have a "vote" as to whether your server belongs in that job, but the menu prices would have to rise by 30% (again, the complexities of our tax system come into play) to cover the straight wages that would be necessary to attract people of any skill to the job. This system allows you to compliment (or admonish) the server for each and every experience, and still pay less than you otherwise would.
I'm excited for you to discover how attentive the service is in our restaurants as a result of this system.
Now, as to your original question...here are some guidelines that I hope you will find helpful on your trip:
Anyone handling and transporting your luggage (this includes taxi drivers loading and unloading the boot of the taxi) should get $1-$2 per bag unless it's something ungodly heavy or in need of very special care, in which case a little extra bribery goes a long way. It is generally considered more tasteful to fold the money up tightly and slip it into the hand of the person you're tipping, as though it's some kind of secret between the two of you. Two exceptions to note: 1) If you carry your bag into the airport yourself and give it to someone who puts it directly on a conveyor belt, you are not expected to tip at all. 2) You will not be thought a cheapskate if, after checking into your hotel, you carry the bags to the room yourself to avoid paying the porter.
Anyone serving you food or beverages will be expecting 10%-25% (dependent on whether they were lousy or remarkable) of the check total. Two exceptions, here: 1) Flight attendants are not allowed to receive tips, and 2) Take-away food/beverages ordered from a counter are generally not tipped for.
Hotel maids will look for a couple dollars left on the bed (as brothel-like as that might seem) daily, with varience based on services requested and received.
Anyone who hails a taxi for you will warrant $1-$3 depending on difficulty/weather conditions.
Very good Taxi drivers should be told to "keep the change" of a few dollars (a $17 fare might warant handing him a $20 bill, etc.), while limousine/private car hires receive 10%-15% of the cost of the hire.
Restroom attendants here are a rarity, but tip according to your conscience based on any mess you might have left and/or any products you have used, as those products are generally paid for by the attendant.
Ushers who actually show you to your seat at a show or event (as opposed to pointing the way) get a tightly folded dollar quietly slipped into their hand.
Anyone giving you a haircut, massage, mani/pedi-cure, etc, should get 10%-15% of the cost of the service.
Hotel Concierge gets anything from a sincere thank-you to 10% of the cost of a show ticket they obtain on your behalf. Knowing how much trouble they have gone to to fulfill your need, let your conscience be your guide.
Have a great trip to our country.

Do you tip maids while in France?
While staying in a hotel in France, should you tip the maids?
Answer: When you stay in a hotel, prices are inclusive of service. However in some hotels the maid leaves a note in an envelope saying that she has serviced your room, in which case you can leave a few small coins if you are staying more than one night, or nothing, as you please . If a maid renders you a special service, for instance changing feather pillows for non allergic ones, or giving you extra pillows or extra bathroom products like shampoo or bath gel, it is a nice gesture to leave something like one or two Euros when you leave the room on departure.

Did your point of view change about French man after DSKs affair ?
Im french and im wondering if american people changed their point of view about french man. Do you think hes guilty or not ?
Answer: Non - pas de tout.
I, do however, have a verry low opinion of diplomats, especially rich, powerful, politicians and bankers. Because they are rich, and powerful many such diplomats and rich people believe they are above the law. Many feel that they are protected by diplomatic immunity and can get away with rape, murder, fraud, finacial scandals etc. If DSK raped an African Muslim maid at that posh New York hotel, then he deserves to meet "Bubba" at a New York prison even if he is a filthy rich IMF banker. I do blame France however for protecting scum like Polanski. A rapist is a rapist (or "violeur") in any language. But this has nothing to do with French people.

Genius and High Jinks At 7 Middagh Street
ITS fitting that the house at 7 Middagh Street first appeared to George Davis in a dream. It was the kind of dream people have in times of stress, full of light-filled rooms and a feeling of transcendence. This was the summer of 1940, when Denmark, Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg and, most incredibly, France had fallen to the Nazis. Pros & Cons > Hotel or Vacation Rental in Paris, France?
Im going to Paris in March for 1 week and Im not sure whether to rent a hotel or apartment for my stay.
What are the pros and cons of renting a hotel vs apartment, vice versa?
Thank you.
Answer: An apartment always sound exciting - but - no maid, no clean towels, no front desk, no one to talk to about your plans. An empty kitchen that will cost you a small fortune in supplies even for a simple breakfast.
For such a short stay, I strongly recommend that you take a hotel. There are thousands and thousands of them in all different price classes and locations.
www.expedia.com is a good start, but there are many other sites for you to find a hotel on.
A hotel will also be more flexible, should you have to change your arrival or departure dates.

How much would you give me if you were my Grandparents?
I am a twenty one year old student living with my Grandparents. Lately they have been busy with work and basic things that I ask for (coffee to be brought to me in bed, fresh towels laid out for me after my bath) are often forgotten and I get frustrated. Dont get me wrong - I love my grandparents and understand those are silly things to get angry for but its also hard being twenty one and living with family. I talked to them and presented my complaints and they said they will pay for me to move out until August, 2013 after which I will be moving home to France for school.
They said I could pick an apartment or even a hotel anywhere in Canada to live in for the year and a half before I go back to school and I have been looking all night for places to live. I have decided Id like to move to the province of Québec and, if possible, Québec City. I dont want to live in apartment, loft or flat because you have to do your own cleaning. In a hotel, a maid will change your bedding and empty the rubbish bins. Because of this, I am leaning towards living in a hotel.
I was researching prices at the Fairmont Château Frontenac and found a room (one of the cheapest at that hotel) that I think is reasonable. It is a compromise because it overlooks the river so I will be happy but is also not anything crazy like a suite. It costs $239 CAD per night so for the period I would be staying there I will need around $130,000 CAD.
Is this a reasonable living cost for a year and a half? I want to know what you think are reasonable price guides for someone in my situation. I really have my heart set on this hotel room.

What should Europe do with the rapidly increasing Muslim population?
There is alot of racism & deep hatred towards these unassimilable non White immigrants who come from Africa & Middle East. The European countries most affected are:Portugal,Spain,France, Italy,Switzerland,The Netherlands, etc.
Answer: There are many sides of looking at this. You have a variety of European thoughts when it comes to this. Europeans should not contradict the values they try to promote though which is humanism, tolerance and respect. I'd like to explain a few things and describe each country though.
I am American. Our country has a different policy on immigration which has been in effect since 1965. Although it isn't explicitly stated, it is obvious our country prefers immigrants from western society. That is why the majority of our immigrants are from Latin America and 2/3 of our Latin Americans are from Mexico alone. Our next largest group are East and South Asians who seem to culturally adapt well no matter where they go (Hinduism and Buddhism are liberal religions that mean something different to each individual).
Here are some points I'd like to make.
1) I don't believe there is a ''deep hatred'' for these Muslim immigrants you're telling me about. Rather there is a frustration that they either won't assimilate or and many who arrive are poor. Saying there is a ''deep hatred'' is a dangerous thing. Only 65-70 years ago, a ''deep hatred'' causes 2/3 of European Jews and 40% of Roma (Gypsies) to be killed.
In the US, many people don't like Mexican immigrants and irrationally call anyone Mexican ''illegal'' and now we even have an invasively absurd law in Arizona which was passed despite our president being against it. There certainly are difference between Americans and Mexicans, but nothing like westerners to Arabs though. A Mexican can get used to living in America. An American can get used to living in Mexico. The hardest part is the lingual barrier. We understand each other even if we don't operate the same way. The psychology of Muslims (especially in the Arab world) is much different. Their thinking is to move to Europe (as well as the US, Canada, Australia and other western countries too) to make money. They aren't coming to ''change their cultures.''
The US has a different way of handling Muslims though. Unlike Europe, which actually takes most of it's Muslims from North Africa and to a lesser degree Eastern Europe, most of ours come from the Middle East and Asian countries. You do not see many Muslim women in the US walking around with burqas. We have no laws prohibiting that. Although they want not do it because of paranoia of mistreatment following 9/11, the reason they don't do it (despite being from more conservative Muslim countries) is because they were aware of the adjustment before arriving. We tend to take the most educated Arabs (doctors, technicians, engineers) with good exposure to the western world (explaining their good English speaking skills).
In contrast, many of our Mexicans are laborers (construction workers, pool cleaners, maintenance workers, hotel maids). The more of one group you take from a country less wealthy than your own, the poorer and less educated they'll be. Especially if the place they are coming from isn't a far place. That is just the way how it is.
2) European birthrates are low. Muslim birth rates are higher. The reason most of Europe's immigrants are from Muslim countries is because those Muslims can speak a wider variety of your languages (partly due to colonization patterns, partly due to geographical proximity). This is especially true with the French. But Germans too. Indian and Chinese come more the US because they are more centered in learning English.
3) These Muslims still mostly only centered in or close to major cities. You can go through many parts of France, Italy, Spain, Britain, Germany and the Netherlands and see few Muslims or foreigners. The countries that seem to be impacted the most by Muslim immigrants are France, Germany and the UK, which are arguably the 3 most wealthy European countries with at least 20 million people. Spain would be next. Switzerland, Portugal, Ireland and Scandinavia to smaller and varying degrees. In Italy, generally only in major cities like Rome and Milan. I don't really think of Albanians as Muslims (especially in Bari) even when they are though because Communism compromised the strictness.
I've read Muslims (especially Pakistanis) move to Norway which is suprising to me because it'd seem hard to have any exposure to the Norweigen language prior to arriving. I guess do a mix of learning quick or facilitating through lingua francas like English and German though.
If Europeans don't want Muslims moving to their countries en masse, than support politicians who will put a halt on the immigration. Don't deal with the issues once they are there. Figure out a way to make it work for all sides.
