THE 2000 CAMPAIGN: THE 1988 CAMPAIGN; For Bush, Thrill Was in Fathers Chase
For months a young woman had been flirting with George W. Bush, resulting in a cash bet among co-workers about whether they would end up having an affair. And now the flirtation had provoked a crisis. Mr. Bush had told the woman off, humiliating her, and a top campaign official stormed into his office and rebuked him. Shes hurt, the official - Article in series, Governor Bushs Journey, focuses on his intense involvement in his fathers 1988 presidential campaign in which he got first real taste of national politics; Governor Bush learned from master strategist Lee Atwater how to maneuver through electoral shoals, but paradoxically remained largely oblivious to substance of fathers campaign; pushed no particular agenda and seemingly never, of own volition, pressed for one policy or another; correspondence with father during Bush presidency reveals virtually no instance in which he urged him to take particular position on any issue; emerging portrait is of individual immensely talented in steering political ship, but who seems less concerned with precisely where ship of state is headed; seems less of political chameleon, than ad hoc decision-maker who lacks bedrock passions; photos (L) - By NICHOLAS D. Bushs Gamble
I was a Bush-watcher long before I thought it would ever be useful and may be able to pinpoint the time he was seized by his inordinate fear of running without solid support from the far right. The - Pres Bush proposes measure that Khalid Shaikh Mohammed and other major terrorism suspects will face trials at Guantanamo Bay in military tribunals that will allow evidence obtained by coercive interrogation and hearsay and deny suspects and their lawyers right to see classified evidence used against them; tribunals will largely hew to procedures that Supreme Court rejected; measure says Congress will, by approving proposed tribunals, affirm that they are constitutional and comply with international law, which Supreme Court says they did not; Pentagon releases new Army Field Manual that requires humane treatment of all terrorism suspects and sets strict limits on interrogation techniques; rules apply to 14 members of Al Qaeda; Sen Lindsey Graham says military justice system outlined ways to allow classified evidence to be introduced without jeopardizing national security; he predicts that this will make bill vulnerable to more court challenges and that it will establish bad precedent that could be used against American troops if other countries brought them to trial; photo; chart of detainees moved to Guantanamo (L) - By KATE ZERNIKE and NEIL A. Abroad at Home;Fear Of Freedom
We think of the United States as a country devoted to freedom of speech, and to an impressive extent it is. But even here the urge to censor lurks in people who should know better. So we have been reminded, depressingly, in the month running up to Christmas. First there was the decision by the Library of Congress to postpone -- or, it may turn out, - By ANTHONY LEWIS
Are we heading into class warfare?
Detroit is in trouble. They went to the federal government and ask for a low interest loan so they could have enough cash flow to keep there doors open. To help keep the economy from going into a full fledged depression. The automakers are having to jump through hoops to get 15 billion. When both houses approve a 700 billion bail out for wall street with little strings attached.
Now the workers who is working for GM, Chrysler, Ford, and the UAW are being the ones to blame for the companies having cash problems. When the foreign car companies open up up factories up in right to work states. They might make close to the same pay as for the workers in Detroit, but they have to pay for there benefits. Then the benefits they get is no where near to being close what the UAW has gotten they workers with the big 3. Which health care, and the lack of health insurance in the United States was a major issue in the last election.
Some might say that Michigan needs to become a right to work state. The original concept of right to work was to make easier for people to get a job, but then companies dont have to have as good of benefits then a state thats not a right to work state my give to there employees. Most of the right to work laws states that an employer can fire anybody they want with out reason. The only reason why a companies come up with reasons is so they dont have to pay the unemployment insurance.
Then you have a CEO of a bank that was bailed out by the government, in a interview stated that he believed that he was intitled and deserved his 10 million bonus check. Yet there is a window factory where the employees are doing a sit in, because they were told on a Tuesday that the factory was closing that Friday. For what, because Bank of America, I believe that is the bank, didnt want to extend credit to the company. So they could keep their doors open. Give their employees what they deserve. Like an actual notice, severence pay, and there benefits.
Novermber there was a over 500,000 jobs lost in the United States. The UAW, is making concessions to there labor contracts to help keep these 3 auto manufactures a float. So where is the justice, Wall Street was bailed out to help protect Main Street. These banks where bailed out, to help loosen up the credit crunch. Which they really havent, it is more important to Wall Street to buy out smaller banks, and pay there employees big fat bounus checks. While the average blue collar worker is having trouble paying there bills. I was against the Wall Street bail out, but for giving the auto companies what they want. A loan, that they are going to pay back. Why didnt Wall Street have to jump through the same hopes as the auto industry is having to.
