How do you feel about Pearl Harbor?

Only if you are foreign to the United States. Ive learned about Pearl Harbor all my life and just recently watched the movie. After finishing the movie in school, I came home and cried. I dont cry often, but I was so upset by it. I just wonder how people in other countries feel about when/if they learn about it. Especially Japanese that would be an interesting turn on things. Thank you.
Answer: Well - it was such a tragedy - we treated the Japanese horribly - of course the US is quite racist - maybe all countries were at that time. But we never would take these people seriously - and we'd tell them what to do all the time. And the got real mad and attacked us! They thought if they sunk our fleet that we'd just retreat and not get into the War. If you ever want to read a dynamite book - read "the Rising Sun" by John Toland. Toland was in the War in the Pacific - but 25 years later, he married a Japanese girl - and because she could speak Japanese (which is a very difficult language) they were able to go to Japan and interview a lot of the soldiers and sailors. So this book is the War from the Japanese standpoint - and this is something we often don't hear about in the US. You can get this book used off of Amazon for quite cheap. It's a great read.

How did the US react to the Pearl Harbor Attacks?

pearl harbor is on tv so im curious. wat did we do to them after they suprise-bombed us? the radiation and extra limbs does seem kinda harsh, but i mean wat did they expect us to do? they bombed us first
Answer: The following day, 8 December 1941, the president asked Congress to declare that a state of war had existed between the United States of America and the Empire of Japan since the attack on Pearl Harbor the previous morning. Congress approved, and we went to war. In response, Germany (an ally of Japan at the time) declared war on the US, and thus began what American history refers to as World War Two. Combat continued for almost four more years, finally ending in late 1945; first with the defeat of Japan, followed shortly after by the defeat of Germany (who was also working on Atomic weapons & delivery systems which they were prepared to share with their Japanese allies). While many responders state that the dropping of the two atomic weapons on Hiroshima & Nagasaki were in retaliation for the attack on Pearl, that notion is incorrect. The tide of the war in the Pacific was turned during the Battle for Midway Island, during which most of the aircraft carriers and many of the pilots involved in the attack against Pearl were destroyed. That action was considered to be a fitting payback for Pearl, and Japan was on the defensive from that point on. When the Allied forces finally got to the point where an invasion of the Japanese mainland was inevitable, it was decided to use the Atomic weapons due to the fact that the Japanese leaders had convinced their people to fight to the death against "the foreign invaders". Faced with the prospect of an invasion that could easily cost millions of lives on both sides, the US decided to drop the big ones and hopefully end the war with relatively few lives lost. The targets, Hiroshima & Nagasaki, were chosen because of their strategic importance to the enemy. Both were military ports used to supply the armed forces of Japan, and were filled with military ships, supplies, and personnel. Naturally there were many civilians in the vicinity, living their lives and providing support to the military bases & sea ports. This was common and not unexpected. Many people like to claim that both cities were populated only with civilians and were targeted in an act of terrorism, but this is simply not true. So the bombs were dropped to end the war, not in revenge for Pearl Harbor. It is also important to note that relatively little was known regarding the long-term effects of using such weapons, and no nukes have been used in combat since that time. The US had only two Atomic weapons at that time. Using both was a gamble devised to convince the Japanese that we were fully prepared to march up the island smashing one city after another. They believed it, and ceased hostilities. Many lives were lost in those two attacks, but many more were saved on both sides that would have surely been lost had we invaded the mainland.

How did the pearl harbor bombing change peoples lives?

I know itss an easy question but that is my thesis statement and i need an idea to write my whole paper on that statement
Answer: As a survivor of WWII, I can tell you LIVING thru it was a big accomplishment. The war in the Pacific was fierce and many soldiers died in just one battle, let alone the "innocent bystanders", that is called "collateral damage" now. 140,000 women & children were POW's in Indonesia of which 40,000 died. 50,MILLION PEOPLE DIED IN WWII give or take 1 Million. So I would say it IMPACTED A LOT OF LIVES ALL OVER THE WORLD. Just read the battle of IWO JIMA< the Bataan deathmarch.> etc. I still remember very clearly. Ask ANYONE who fought and lived through that war. Yup even Americans. Lots of GI's left their lives on obscure islands and obscure places. ASK those FAMILIES if it changed their lives. You bet, women here in America worked on assembly lines and therefor got into jobs that they would have NEVER dreamed of when they were just in their teens. The most decorated soldier in WWII was 16 yrs and hid his age, so he could join the army. Planes were used in WWII and they were not as they are now. I visited AFTER the Hiroshima where one of the atom bombs were dropped. I stood at the very epicenter of it. There is a huge peacepark with several monuments there. I realized then, eventhough I was POW of the Japanese and of the Indonesian people right after. WWII. The things ONE human can do to another, are TRULY more then anyone can even imagine. And yet we fight with each other every day in the cafetria and at home. It will ALWAYS be that way UNLESS we learn to co-exist in every way in this your own life. I hope you will get answers that may not be as HEAVY. All I know is what I lived through and what happened to all the people in my family. No we were not Jews, just dutch citizens. Either way the WAR took away the innocence of the children of that Era. I was 2 1/2 years old and 7 when I came out. In those years I managed to gain 1/2 lb. No I am not a victim. It made me a survivor. It helped to make a life in the USA. It is NOT an EASY question, however very hard for someone to imagine when they have never lived through anything like it. Good luck with your Thesis. The holocaust that war took away homes, family heritage, pictures, LOVED ones. But the holo- caust takes part of WWII in Europe. The forgotten ones, are the ones that lived in the Pacific. Even when I came with my mother and my grandmother to Holland in 1949. I visited Rotterdam and it was still a bomb site so many places were no longer there. I stood with my mother in Scheveningen and when she around the KUR HAUS there, she cried when she saw the pier that had been there was gone. Everyone there talked about what happened in their homes and showed places where they had hidden their family members from the NAZIS and NOONE there asked about the years we had spend in the Prison Camps on JAVA or SUMATRA. If someone asked and you gave an answer, they kind of sat there politely, hoping you would not talk about it. I was in a strange country to me, strange food, terrible weather frm being the tropics and to "serious" for the other kids. Write your Thesis on those things. We the survivors of that war are passing into history rapidly now. MANY who fought so valiantly are dying now. That war really was for the FREEDOM of this planet. Thank you for letting me answer this somewhat for you. Margret

What was the American combat experience like in the Pacific Theatre during World War II?

What kinds of weapons were used? What was combat like? What emotions did soldiers feel? Why did soldiers fight? Why did minority soldiers fight? Was combat and Army life different for minority soldiers? Why or why not? Although I appreciate the book suggestions, I just need a brief overview, of how the combat experience went.
Answer: In a word, combat in the Pacific tended to be grim. Navy forces and air forces had somewhat more comfortable times of it, but they suffered heavy losses as well, early on, and continued to suffer significant losses right up to the end of the war. The weapons they used were Navy: The various gun-combat ship types, submarines, and a variety of carrier based fighter and bomber aircraft. Air Force: Early on the P-40, P-36/39, P-38 and later P-51 Mustangs, B-24, B-25 and eventually A/B-26 and B-29. The ground combat experience was horrific. The Japanese had plenty of time to plan their defenses, to dig in, and to prep the battlefield. Invading American forces had to contend with these well-planned and executed defenses as well as the natural obstacles of such places, like extreme heat and lack of water (see Pelielu), coral reefs offshore (see Tarawa), difficult soil situations (see Iwo Jima). Finally, it should be noted that the Japanese fought in fanatical defiance of mortality and surrender, and used literally every trick in the book to inflict casualties on the Allied forces. They routinely fought to nearly the last man. Weapons: M-1 Garand rifle, M-1 Carbine, M-1 Thompson submachine gun, BARs, M-1919 air and water cooled machineguns, M-2 .50 caliber machineguns, pineapple frag grenades, flame throwers and bazookas. Later, some M-3 submachine guns also came in. Why did soldiers fight? Well, many were drafted, and the penalties for failure to obey orders is death. More common, however, was the fact that the Japanese had attacked Pearl Harbor, sgtarting the war, and the American soldiers meant to drive them back and force the surrender of the Japanese Empire. Minority soldiers also were patriotic, often, and many also hoped that by taking their place and fighting to defend America and defeat Japan, they would prove themselves worthy of all the rights and freedoms promised by America. Army life was diffeerent for them, as many were segregated (see the Black Marines), and others were the constant butt of harrassment and small-minded racism. However, combat was little different for many minority soldiers. War is hell. Some minority troops, like the Black Marines on Iwo Jima, were not really supposed to fight. Their job was to unload cargo and move it up to the fighting units. Those goals aside, they usually ended up having to fight anyway, and they certainly suffered significant casualties while trying to do their assigned jobs under intense fire.

How were US realtions with Japan pre pearl harbor/world war II?

I am writing a paper and need some information...if you know anything about the USs relations with Japan before pearl harbor Id love to know! Please provide any sources if you have them...thank you!
Answer: Not really good. It does happen that two life-long buddies suddenly start arguing, but rarely in politics. Japan was (not so) slowly but surely expanding its influence in Asia and the Pacific. The USA was quite naturally not very keen to see that happen. The reason for Pearl Harbor was the scrap iron and oil embargo instituted by the US on Japan. The reason given was the behavior of Japan in China. (Which was truly horrible.) But it shows the relations between Japan and the US weren't exactly good.

Why was the U.S still well prepared to go to war against the Axis powers?

Why was the U.S still well prepared to go to war against the Axis powers? During the attack on pearl harbor, world war 2 I understand, they didnt give oil to japan and this all started.
Answer: Japan had no Natural resources for Steel and relied on the US to continue to provide it resources to power its War machine. As soon as we cut them off we became the enemy. Also they did not believe we belonged in the pacific and that Hawaii was on their ancestral territory. They wanted us out of the Pacific and as long as we were there we were a threat to them. Japan also was trying to reunite the Asian countries as one. We were unprepared for the attack. Mostly because Japan had an ambassador in the US at the time negotiating with us for a treaty of peace among other things as Japan planned and executed the attack on Pearl. The Miscalculation of the attack was that the Air craft carriers were out on Maneuvers and were spared during the attack. Air craft carriers were not proven at the time to be major threats and had not proven their tactical advantages during war time so Japan did not see them as a priority. Now it seems all too obvious the carriers made all the difference in the pacific war. Also the US salvage effort was able to raise many of the ships sunk in the harbor to fight another day. Germany was Defeated before Japan surrendered. Many believe the choice to drop the Bomb saved many more lives then it took. The awesome spectacle forced Japan to surrender before a land invasion on Japans mainland became necessary. Considering how Japan defended the pacific islands and the heavy casualties suffered on both sides. It most certainly is a valid assumption they would have fought to the last man defending the soil their citizens occupied.

What is your opinion of Douglas MacArthur?

My opinion is that MacArthur is an overrated scumball and a lousy military commander. He let his planes get caught on the ground 2 days after Pearl Harbor was bombed. The Bataan defense was incompetently planned by him. He stayed in Australia with his wife while his men endured hardships in the field. The Philipines should have been by-passed to save american lives and resources. It should have been "we" shall return, not "I" shall return. Finally he went off on some kind of god worship that the Japs showed him during the occupation and his mind became totally unhinged. He let the Japanese murder whales despite strong protests from our allies Britain, Australia, New Zealand, China, and the Phillipines. Tens of thousands of magnificent whales were murdered due to MacArthur. Truman was right to fire his ass. "Old soldiers never die, they just fade away" Good. He would have been a worse President than George W. Bush. Comments please.
Answer: Some of what you say is true. The story about MacArthur's troops always having the least casualties, that's not true. That's just the way his staff promoted it. MacArthur was an expert at propaganda and self promotion. His press corps would of been envied by any later-day politician. Example: MacArthur's Pacific Campaign casualties were 196,661,including 67,149 deaths. Nimitz Pacific Campaign casualties were 108,906, including 28,859 deaths. Also MacArthur repeatedly declared battles over when major fighting still remained.Example: Biak, declared secure on June 3, with fighting until Aug. 20. Leyte declared secure on Dec. 25th,1944 and fighting continuing until May,1945. My opinion, he was an ego-maniac with delusions of grandeur but a good strategic General.

What are the conspiracies surrounding the events of Pearl Harbor?

Im looking for a list of the conspiracies surrounding the events of Pearl Harbor.
Answer: Many conspiracies surrounding Pearl Harbor revolve around when the US was able to break the Japanese military code, and how much information they had. The movement of the Pacific Fleet's aircraft carriers out of Hawaii, combined with recently released documents highlighting the amount of intelligence available to US military before Pearl Harbor, have prompted some theorists to conclude that Roosevelt and his commanders deliberately sacrificed their men. Many historians reject this account of affairs, suggesting that incompetence, rather than ruthlessness, was the key to America's failure to prevent Pearl Harbor. Yet doubts remain over what really happened that day, and why the US Navy was caught out so badly How much did the US know in advance and could any government really be callous enough to sacrifice thousands of lives for its own strategic aims? The central conspiracy theory is that commanders on the ground were denied crucial intelligence on the Japanese attack in order to provoke a war with Japan and Germany. Theorists have used declassified documents and Freedom of Information legislation to show that some branches of the US government did have a degree of prior knowledge about the attack. One of the most important documents to come to light is the so-called "McCollum memo". Sent on October 7, 1940, by naval intelligence officer Arthur McCollum to Navy chiefs Walter Anderson and Dudley Knox, two of President Roosevelt's most trusted military advisors, it details an eight step plan for provoking Japan into "an overt act of war". To many theorists, the fact that the US army's Signals Intelligence Service and Office of Naval Intelligence had already broken many Japanese codes is clear evidence that the government must have known about an impending attack. By late 1941 cryptographers had even deciphered "Purple" the highest clearance Japanese code. The conspiracy is said to have revolved around the intelligence services accessing the plans for Pearl Harbor, but failing to pass that knowledge on to Admiral Kimmel and General Short of the pacific fleet. If the theory is to be believed, it was this act which cost 2,400 sailors their lives, but helped Roosevelt to turn the war in Europe in the allies' favour. The sheer enormity of what happened at Pearl Harbor has led many to believe that someone, somewhere in the US army, must have had advance knowledge that an attack was being planned. If all intelligence and cryptographical services within all allied countries had been working as one homogenous unit then there is a chance that the US government might have known about Pearl Harbor in advance. However, this was simply not the case. The fact that the attack was carried out was due to failures in the intelligence system. It was not a callous act by a President hungry for war in Europe. There is no compelling evidence to prove that Roosevelt deliberately sacrificed his own men.

Were most Japanese soldiers stationed in Hiroshima and Nagasaki during the Atom bombing dropping?

This is a fact: The war in the Pacific had cost 1000s and 1000s of lives. It would cost more unless the US used the Atom bomb. So were most Japanese military/soldiers stationed in Hiroshima and Nagasaki when the bomb was dropped?
Answer: ~No invasion would have been necessary to end the war and no one believed that the invasion would ever take place.. By August 1945, Curtis LeMay's bombers had already destroyed 67 Japanese cities and killed as many as 2 million Japanese civilians with conventional TNT and incendiary bombs. LeMay was complaining that he had no worthwhile targets left against which to task his planes, which flew virtually uncontested across Japanese skies. The Japanese Navy had ceased to exist. The few remaining ships were decommissioned and rusting at anchor. The Japanese still had warplanes but few experienced pilots to fly them and little fuel to get them into the air. In fact, the Japanese watched both Enola Gay and Bocks Car on radar for hours as they were inbound but decided not to risk planes and pilots in an effort to intercept such small formations. Japan had been sending out peace feelers for months through channels in Sweden, Switzerland, Moscow and elsewhere. Emperor Showa had taken the unheard of step of addressing the cabinet personally in April, telling them to "end the war at any cost". MacArthur, for one, recommended negotiating a peace with a ceasefire in place, as had been offered by the Japanese. Even more effective than the conventional bombing was the blockade. Japan has never had the resources or materials on the home islands to fuel her industries or feed her people. Japan was slowly starving to death and was under martial law for fear of a general uprising by those opposed to the war. "The Japanese had, in fact, already sued for peace. The atomic bomb played no decisive part, from a purely military point of view, in the defeat of Japan." Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, Commander in Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet. "In1945 Secretary of War Stimson, visiting my headquarters in Germany, informed me that our government was preparing to drop an atomic bomb on Japan. I was one of those who felt that there were a number of cogent reasons to question the wisdom of such an act. During his recitation of the relevant facts, I had been conscious of a feeling of depression and so I voiced to him my grave misgivings, first on the basis of my belief that Japan was already defeated and that dropping the bomb was completely unnecessary, and secondly because I thought that our country should avoid shocking world opinion by the use of a weapon whose employment was, I thought, no longer mandatory as a measure to save American lives." Dwight D. Eisenhower "The use of [the atomic bombs] at Hiroshima and Nagasaki was of no material assistance in our war against Japan. The Japanese were already defeated and ready to surrender." Admiral William D. Leahy, Chief of Staff to President Truman Douglas MacArthur (Commander of US Army Forces in the Far East) - "There was no military justification for the dropping of the atomic bombs. The war might have ended weeks earlier, if the United States had agreed, as it later did anyway, to the retention of the institution of the [Japanese] Emperor." "Based on a detailed investigation of all the facts, and supported by the testimony of the surviving Japanese leaders involved, it is the Survey's opinion that certainly prior to 31 December 1945, and in all probability prior to 1 November 1945, Japan would have surrendered even if the atomic bombs had not been dropped, even if Russia had not entered the war, and even if no invasion had been planned or contemplated." The United States Strategic Bombing Survey, July 1, 1946. Neither city held much military import. The planners did know than an unknown number of US and Allied POWs were being held near Hiroshima and that about 2,000 US citizens (mostly students stranded in Japan after Pearl Harbor) were interned in the city. Hiroshima, Kokura (the actual primary target for Little Boy) and Nagasaki (the secondary target) could easily have been taken out by LeMay's bombers. They were off limits to conventional bombing because virgin targets were wanted for live fire tests and comparative damage assessments of the weapons. Military brass that favored use of the weapons (most agreed they were no more necessary than would be an invasion) were divided. Some favored dropping them on uninhabited ground, others preferred they be held in reserve until neared the anticipated invasion date (in November) in the unlikely event that Downfall got the go ahead. They asked that the weapons be used on militarily targets or on troop concentrations. They were not heeded. Invasion plans called for the first landings to be on southern Kyushu, with the invasion of Honshu itself to follow not earlier than April 1946. Most Japanese ground forces were still in China, losing there. Kukura and Nagasaki are on the north side of the island. The Honshu landings were to be via Tokyo Bay with the worst fighting forecast in the Kanto Plain. Hiroshima is no where near the area.

Do you think there is a connection between Pearl Harbor and the Atomic Bombs dropping in Japan?

What is the connection between Pearl Harbor and the Atomic Bombs dropping in Japan? What were some of the arguments for the US dropping the bombs? What were some of the aruments against the use of bombs? What is your oppinion?
Answer: Err, I can see a lot of bad answers. No there is no "direct" connection between Pearl Harbor and the Atomic bombs being drop. Pearl Harbor was attacked in 1941 and we dropped two atomic bombs in 1945. Why? because Germany was defeated and the US had the policy of "Germany first" thats why we sent 70 percent our forces to Europe and only 30 percent to the Pacific. The casualties of a land invasion of Japan were estimated at 500,000 to 1 million and a prolonging of the war for 2 more years. Also the Soviets were attacking and invading everything and they were threatening an Invasion of Japan. So we killed over 500,000 Japanese with 2 atomic bombs which ended the war without further American lives lost, and it showed the Soviets "American Might". We were the only country with Nukes. You have to look at factors like that in war. This whole retarded idea of Japan sneak attacking the Philippines, and Pearl Harbor and we just pushed a red button and dropped atomic bombs is very common and ignorant. The war was 4 years long! not 3 days. Not to mention our Atomic bombs were not ready until 1945 or we would have hit Germany with them too. If we had those in 1941, Japan would have never attacked us. Its funny how so many misinformed people don't read my post and give me a thumbs down. There is no direct connection, in saying that you would be saying that we wanted "revenge" the govt. doesn't think like that during war. They use logic and common sense for the most part and they try to bring wars to an end in the most efficient way. Pearl Harbor brought us into the war, end of story.

When Britain declared war On Germany in 1939 why didnt the Americans jump in to help the European countries?

After all America is largely composed of Europeans? Why didnt they help out the French, The poles The Spanish And the Italians until 1941? Will somebody tell me? All we hear about is Pearl Harbour. This is Americas shame and but for them millions of lives would have been saved. Remember that by 1941 Italy had jacked it in and there country was occupied by Germany. Italian/Americans must have been sick that America didnt help.
Answer: Because we knew that the Japanese were going to attack us, and knew that you Euros could take care of yourselves. When one of my great uncles was charging the beaches of Iwo Jima, he mentioned that he thought that there were a lot of British and Russian troops at his side. Now don't quote him, as he's old and his memory may fail him. It may have been just us Americans. But he'd like to thank you Brits and Russians for fighting the good fight for so long, so that you softened up the Japanese for us "Johnny Come Lately" Yanks. So that we could oh so easily sashay our way through the Pacific without any trouble. As we know that the Brits and the Russians were completely the cause of the Allies victory. Why is it that when talking about WWII, the Brits forget the Pacific entirely, except when it comes to us evil Yanks who dropped those evil Atomic bombs on those defenseless Japanese, otherwise, the war consisted entirely in Europe. I know this isn't true since you Brits did yourselves well in Burma. But don't let a few technicalities get in the way of a rant now. AZ P.S. Plus, you Brits say that WWII started in 1939. How about asking some of the Chinese when WWII started. I don't believe the Rape of Nanking started in 1939, or are the Chinese just as jaded as us Yanks? Why oh why didn't you Brits help out the poor Chinese before, well, whenever? Didn't you care about them? Thumbs me down all you want son.

I have to write an essay for my college professer about recruiting soldiers to the us military and explain the significance of pearl harbor help.
Answer: Hello- The significance of Pearl Harbor was of course, the base for the Pacific Fleet prior to WWII. It position was strategically important because it cut the distances from the Philippines, Japan and the rest of the Pacific Island groups by thousands of miles from the west coast of the US, either by air or sea. The bombing of Pearl Harbor was the act of war that brought the US into WWII on the side of the allies against the Axis powers, Japan, Germany and Italy. But mostly it allowed the US to pursue the Pacific war by itself against Japan and supported our warships and fleet for the duration of the conflict. Pearl Harbor ended American neutrality and isolationism during World War II, and caused the United States to declare war on the Axis (Germany, Italy, and Japan). Prior to that, the United States had only provided assistance to Great Britain's war effort. While we supported Britain & France with our Atlantic Fleet, very few of those two countries warships came to the Pacific to support us. Pearl Harbor is a symbol of what many consider the ultimate betrayal of one country towards another, a sneak attack and many deaths. Whether our country knew of the attack is now irrelevant as it is done and gone. We hold Pearl Harbor also as a symbol of sacrifice as many Navy and Marine personnel are still entombed in the USS Arizona and is visited by many thousands of tourist each year to pay their respects to the dead. Approximately 1000 WWII vets die each year so it won't be long until the last vet has passed. We, as a country, should elevate and praise the memory those who have sacrificed with their lives.

What is the theory regarding Pearl Harbour that the US orchestrated this attack to go to war in WWII?

how they could orchestrate this attack? and is it true that this is a theory? how created? where is evidence? how many people died in the attack and , again, how they could fake it? WHY THEY WOULD NEED TO? why would Roosevelt have needed to do this as surely they could wage war on an enemy of Britain couldnt they? ALSO, HOW POPULAR IS THIS THEORY? WHEN, HOW STARTED THIS?
Answer: There is no theory that I am aware of that the US orchestrated the attack on Pearl Harbor. That is simply impossible for an attack of that magnitude to have been kept secret. The attacks were carried out by Japan; that is beyond speculation. There is a theory that FDR was aware of the impending attack but did not notify the naval base at Pearl Harbor. This is extremely unlikely for a number of reasons. 1. Our military intelligence was already in place before Pearl Harbor. We were monitoring the Japanese as best we could while remaining neutral. We knew that their main battle fleet had left Japan, but we did not know where it was, or where it was going. Because any intelligence we gathered about that activity would have been gathered in the Pacific, it would have been routed through Pearl Harbor, our main naval base. So the naval commanders in Pearl would have heard the news before the President did. 2. There was simply no need for FDR to hide this information. Any attack, no matter how successful or unsuccessful, would have angered the US to the point of declaring war. To claim that FDR felt the attack not only had to happen, but had to be an overwhelming defeat for the US, including thousands of lives of servicemen we could ill afford to lose, not to mention the battleships that were, at the time, considered to be the backbone of our Navy, is simply preposterous. 3. The situation in December 1941 was extremely tense already. Everyone, including the Japanese, knew it was just a matter of time before the US entered the war. This was the reason why they attacked Pearl Harbor in the first place; to try to decapitate the most potent threat to their goals before it could be used against them, in the hopes that by the time the Americans mobilized they'd have already achieved all their goals and were too strong for the US to attack. 4. There is not a single shred of evidence from anywhere that the president knew of the impending attack until after it was under way. FDR's administration left behind reams of paperwork, and even the classified documents have now been made public. There is simply no basis for this charge. In this case, at least, what you read in the history books is true. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was secret, unprovoked and devastatingly successful... with no help whatsoever from FDR.

What are recently released movies that take place in the 1920s-40s?

By recently released I mean in the past 20 years. They can revolve around the war or even what life was like at home during the war. I know and have seen Band of Brothers, The Pacific, Pearl Harbor, Boardwalk Empire, and Mildred Pierce. Any other suggestions?
Answer: These 4 are primarily war related: The Boy In The Striped Pajamas's Schindler's List Saving Private Ryan Inglorious Bastards The Curious Case of Benjamen Button Seabiscuit To Kill a Mocking Bird
