How can any sane person read this and say the recession is over, things are better?

New US jobless claims fell to 550,000 in the past week, the government reported Thursday in a sign of further healing in the critical labor market. The seasonally adjusted number of claims fell by 26,000 in the week to September 5, the Labor Department reported. The figure for weekly claims was better than analyst expectations for 560,000. The four-week moving average, which smooths out week-to-week volatility, was 570,000, a decrease of 2,750 from the previous weeks revised figure. The insured unemployment rate was 4.6 percent for the week ending August 29, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week as the number of people receiving jobless benefits fell by 159,000 to 6,088,000. The weekly report offers one of the most up-to-date snapshots of the job market, critical to economic momentum. The monthly report for August showed unemployment hitting a 26-year high of 9.7 percent with 216,000 jobs lost.
Answer: Like the 1930's, while the market recovered, it was a jobless recovery due to excessive government spending and taxation. So, while our 401k's might look good, it doesn't mean there will be any decrease in unemployment for years. Government borrowing (so they can spend in excess of revenues) crowds out private borrowing for businesses and investors. The proposed taxes (cap & trade, etc) will take even more money out of the economy that could have been used to expand business or invest. So, like the 1930's, there will be a jobless recovery. But without a World War, when will this one end?

Woman facing deportation remains at Simi church A 31-year-old woman from Oxnard named Liliana, accused of falsely claiming to be a U.S. citizen during a failed attempt to enter the country a decade ago, remains on church property 730 days after she arrived with her then-5-month-old son. She stayed there when her uncle died and when her father was in the hospital with prostate cancer, fearful leaving even for a few hours could mean deportation. As they have from the beginning, immigration authorities say only that they have the right to arrest lawbreakers at what they call appropriate times and places. They have made no visible effort to contact Liliana. Her children have written letters to President Barack Obama. Her lawyers hold out hope they have found a way to allow her to return home to Oxnard, maybe within months. But legal experts say there’s no way to know how long the stalemate will continue. “They could ignore her for the rest of her life,” said USC law professor Niels Frenzen, who expects the government will eventually act. She calls herself Liliana Santuario, using the Spanish word for sanctuary and refusing to use her real name. She lives behind United Church of Christ in a parsonage decorated with her wedding photo, a flag that displays Our Lady of Guadalupe amid Mexico’s colors and knickknacks featuring Hannah Montana. Inside the front door, on the other side of a welcome sign, hangs a note with the phone number of a lawyer to call in case a visitor refuses to provide identification. That has happened. But the threats of citizen arrests, angry rallies on Sunday mornings and a battle with the city over the costs of security at the protests faded long ago. Ask people once involved about Liliana now and they’re surprised she’s still there. “I’ve basically lost track. Answer: I just do not see how this Church can look anybody in the eye and give them a recipe for life .. Why is it these days Churches veer away from the Bible and now just pick and select what laws they like vs dislike. Why are the Churches not offering these services into other areas ?
